## What is ChessMem?

One of the most versatile chess training apps there is: 162 openings, 27 traps, 44,000 rated tactics, your own lines, scanned book diagrams, any position you can set up — all memorized through spaced repetition.

ChessMem turns opening study into something you actually finish. Instead of watching videos and forgetting everything by your next game, you practice master-verified lines through spaced repetition — the app brings them back at the right moment so they stick for good.

HOW IT WORKS
Pick an opening. Drag pieces to play the correct moves. Wrong moves show you the right answer. Score 100% and the line enters Mem Mode, where spaced repetition brings it back at increasing intervals — first after a day, then three, then a week, growing from there. By the time you sit down to play, the moves are automatic.

NEW TO CHESS? START HERE
A short guide on your first line covers the board, how moves are written (e4, Nf3, O-O), and what every control does — so nothing is guesswork. Reopen it any time from Help.

TACTICS AND CHECKMATE PATTERNS
44,000 rated puzzles from the Lichess open database, served around your level, with your own puzzle rating that moves on your first attempt at each one. Drill the named checkmates on their own — smothered mate, back-rank, Anastasia's and more — until you see them on the board.

ADD YOUR OWN LINES AND POSITIONS
Your repertoire isn't only what we ship. Record moves on the board, paste a PGN or FEN, scan a page from a chess book with your camera, or set up any position in the board editor. Photograph a diagram from an endgame or tactics book and play it out as often as you like. Anything you add practices and memorizes exactly like a built-in opening, syncs across your devices, and exports as PGN to send to a friend, a coach or a student.

OPENING TRAPS
27 tactical traps built into the openings — lines that win games when your opponent walks into them. Learn the traps in your favorite openings, recognize them when opponents try them on you, and add a few sneaky weapons to your own repertoire.

A REAL REPERTOIRE, NOT JUST A LIST
• 162 curated openings, 12,700+ lines
• Up to 15 moves deep on main lines
• Every move verified against the Lichess Masters Database
• A depth slider you control — main line only, then key lines, common deviations, or everything, one opening at a time

A STARTER REPERTOIRE IN ONE QUESTION
Not sure what to learn first? Answer one question about the kind of chess you want to play — Classical, Aggressive, Creative, Complex or Practical — and a White opening plus answers to both 1.e4 and 1.d4 go straight into your Favorites. Changeable whenever you like.

AI EXPLANATIONS AND PLANS
Stuck on why a move is the right one? Tap for a plain-English explanation of the idea behind it — the threat, the plan, the alternative your opponent has to worry about — demonstrated on the board, move by move. It works on tactics as well as openings. Every opening also comes with a plan: what you're aiming for, and what your opponent wants.

LEARN FROM YOUR REAL GAMES
Connect your Chess.com username and get a report on the openings that are actually costing you points, so you know which lines to drill next.

TRACK PROGRESS, EARN BADGES
Every opening fills in as you complete lines and variations. Hit 100% on every line and you earn a permanent badge — go gold by topping the leaderboard. Favorites, Mem Mode and progress bars keep you focused on what needs work.

SYNC ACROSS DEVICES
Sign in once and your progress, favorites and review schedule travel with you between iPhone, iPad and the web.

### 5/5 — Excellent to learn concepts

*2026-06-09*

Although I haven’t fully memorised all the lines for any openings, I’ve learnt some traps and the general shapes and concepts of some openings I was interested in. This is one of the better chess opening apps I’ve tried. Thank you

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 7.1 — 2026-08-29

Fixes throughout and Tactics is here! Thousands of rated puzzles plus the named checkmate patterns — smothered mate, back-rank, Anastasia's and more — with your own puzzle rating that moves on your first attempt at each one.
AI explanations now work on tactics as well as openings, and act the moves out on the board.
New here? A short guide on first use covers the board, how moves are written, and what every control does. You can reopen it any time from Help.
Setting up a repertoire is now one question: pick the kind of chess you want to play and a White opening plus answers to 1.e4 and 1.d4 go straight into your Favourites.
Free practice is now measured in lines a day, not attempts — so retrying a line you are still learning costs you nothing.
Faster sign-in, clearer puzzle scoring, and a long list of fixes to practice, the sidebar and the completion screen.

### 6.0 — 2026-08-23

Build your own positions and lines. Set up any position on a board editor and train from there. Scan a printed diagram with the camera and it lands on the board ready to play. Paste a FEN or PGN to train a position or line straight from a book or game. Save positions with no moves and play them freely. Every opening now has a plan: tap the opening name to see your plan and what the opponent wants. Notes work offline. Stability and performance fixes.

### 5.1.0 — 2026-08-19

Fixes and polish throughout.
• My Lines now loads on a fresh install and after a dropped connection — no more relaunching to see your lines.
• Your own lines can be selected in Mem Mode again, and practising them counts towards your daily total.
• Leaving a line part-way no longer schedules it for review.
• The depth slider no longer changes your Mem Mode counts — it only sets how many lines are open to practise.
• Backing out of the menu now clears the board instead of leaving the last opening playing.
• Notes on your own lines save reliably offline.
• Sharper move explanations, now naming checks and forced mates when they are really there.

### 5.0 — 2026-08-17

• Every variation now has a proper name — "Line 1" and "Other" are gone, replaced by descriptive names like "hxg3 Knight Trade". Established names you know stay unchanged.
• Import and export your lines as PGN — folders, sides and notes included; export everything, one folder, or hand-picked lines, and send a repertoire by email or WhatsApp
• Train positions, not just openings — imported lines can start from an endgame or middlegame position, so a coach's PGN or a Lichess study drills exactly as an opening does
• New Navigator sidebar — browse and practise everything one level at a time; replaces the old dropdown list, and the roller picker is unchanged
• Excluded lines no longer appear at launch before your settings have synced
• Improved pre-made Collections
