## What is Chiado?

Chiado is the Portuguese word for a hiss — the sound of static. It's also a neighbourhood in Lisbon.

Chiado plays white, pink and brown noise, generated live on your device rather than looped from a recording, so it never repeats and never runs out.

Pick a colour, or use the blend slider to sit anywhere between them. Brighter for masking a room; deeper for something you stop noticing.

THREE COLOURS
White — bright and airy. Even across the spectrum.
Pink — soft and balanced. The one most people settle on.
Brown — deep and rumbly. Weighted to the low end.

A SLEEP TIMER THAT FADES
Set a duration and the sound eases down to silence instead of stopping dead.

BUILT FOR LEAVING RUNNING
Keeps playing when you lock the phone or switch apps. Full lock-screen and Control Centre controls. A Live Activity and Dynamic Island so the timer is visible without opening the app.

ASK SIRI
"Play brown noise." "Set a Chiado sleep timer."

QUIET BY DESIGN
No account. No ads. No tracking, no analytics, no data collected — the app has no networking code at all. Nothing to subscribe to.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.1 — 2026-09-12

The sleep timer now counts down on the lock screen and in Control Centre, and the skip buttons there switch between white, pink and brown noise.

Siri now recognises the app name however you pronounce it, and takes a length: "Play brown noise for 4 hours in Chiado". There is also a "Stop Chiado" phrase.

Removed the Live Activity and the in-app volume slider: the lock screen, Control Centre and the hardware buttons already do both.

### 1.0 — 2026-09-01

No release notes.
