## What is ChipVault?

The only iOS app dedicated to NXP DESFire EV2 and EV3 NFC cards. ChipVault turns your DESFire cards into hardware-backed personal data vaults — AES-128 encrypted at the chip level, secured by your own master password. No cloud, no servers, no accounts, no subscriptions. The cards in your wallet are the storage.

SECURE FIRST.
Traditional NXP card tools fall short on security when working with these chips. ChipVault treats native AES encryption, EV2 Secure Messaging, and proper key derivation as first-class citizens — not afterthoughts. Every byte written to a card is encrypted with a key derived from your master password and that card's unique UID. The same data on a different card is a different ciphertext. A different password unlocks nothing. The chip enforces this at the silicon level.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
— Personalize a blank DESFire EV2 or EV3 card into a ChipVault: pick up to 8 categories from a palette of 15+ pre-canned options (Financial, Medical, Travel, Auto, Insurance, Tools, Credentials, Licenses, Subscriptions, Crypto Recovery, Family, Work, Notes, Wi-Fi & IoT, Personal IDs) or roll your own with custom names
— Store passwords, codes, account numbers, notes, recovery phrases — each entry is a simple key plus a multi-line value, with optional hide-by-default for sensitive fields
— Read your data with a tap and your master password
— Edit a card after enrollment: rename it, change its theme and icon, rename any category — all instant, no NFC tap needed
— Add new categories or delete existing ones on a card you've already personalized — one NFC tap each, with confirmation
— Clone an entire card to a backup card — your safety net stays in your physical control, with per-trait toggles for what carries over (name, theme, icon)
— Recover from a stuck chip memory allocator with Reset & Restructure — wipes entries and rebuilds the card with your current category set (chip-level recovery you'll rarely need, but you'll be glad it's there if you do)
— See exactly how much space each category is using with the visual storage donut
— Reset any card back to factory state with a single command
— Delete individual entries cleanly with no leftover ghost data

USE CASES
— A password manager backup that doesn't live on anyone's cloud
— A travel-only vault you carry separately from your phone
— Encrypted storage for crypto recovery phrases that survives device loss
— An emergency credentials kit that goes in a safe deposit box
— A shared medical info card a family member can read with their own ChipVault install (if they know your master password)

PRIVACY BY DESIGN
ChipVault has no servers. No analytics. No tracking SDKs. No accounts to create. Nothing you do leaves your device, except a small operational record stored in your own iOS Keychain (which you control). Your master password is never transmitted, never logged, and never recoverable — write it down somewhere safe.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED
— An iPhone with NFC support (iPhone 7 or later)
— One or more NXP DESFire EV2 or EV3 NFC cards (widely available online — see the in-app guide)

ONE-TIME PURCHASE
A 20-day free trial. After that, a single one-time purchase unlocks ChipVault forever — on all your devices. No subscriptions. Ever.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.4.0 — 2026-08-18

New in 2.4.0

- Public Record: give a card a tappable link or contact (vCard) that any phone can read on tap — no app required.
- Storage view now shows a Public Record slice so you can see the space it reserves.
- New Card & Edit flag malformed web addresses as you type.
- Diagnostics is now the Runtime Diagnostics Log (RDL).

### 2.3.0 — 2026-08-12

Export & Import — Backup & Recovery

You can now back up a card's contents to a portable, encrypted file and
restore them later. From a card's Edit screen, Export creates a password-
protected .cvx.json backup; Import lets you view, copy, or restore a backup
onto a card. Backups are locked with your ChipVault Password and work across
iPhone and Android.

### 2.2.0 — 2026-08-09

Runtime Diagnostic Log (RDL) — if something doesn't go smoothly with a card, you can now help us fix it fast. Go to Settings → Diagnostics, turn on "Capture diagnostic log," reproduce what happened, then export or share the log. It's off by default, records only app events (never your passwords, card contents, or keys), and turns itself off automatically after 30 minutes.

Plus reliability improvements to the card‑scanning experience.

### 2.1.1 — 2026-07-23

Fixes: refresh indicator no longer overlaps storage legend on cards with 4 categories.

### 2.1.0 — 2026-07-22

New in this version:
One-tap refresh — every card on your shelf now has a ↻ pill in the bottom-right. One tap refreshes chip info + storage in a single NFC session.
Show/hide password toggle on the Set/Change ChipVault Master Password screen so you can verify what you typed.
Theme name at a glance — Settings > Theme now shows the currently-selected theme without having to open the picker.
Unified brand mark across Splash, About, and the top of your vault matches the Home Screen icon.

Improvements & fixes:
Chip production week/year now decodes correctly. Cards enrolled before v2.1.0 will show the ↻ pill in red — tap it to refresh and the correct values will return.
Reset Card sheet — the soft keyboard no longer covers the Original Password field.
2K DESFire cards now surface a friendly "card too small" error before enrollment starts.
Read All Categories now picks up cross-device renames (rename a category on another device → tap Read All → category name updates).
Add Category's pre-flight capacity check tightened — borderline attempts no longer fail mid-provision on nearly-full cards.
Reset Card with "Use Current CMP" now shows a clearer error when the stored CMP doesn't unlock the card.
Trial state now refreshes when the app returns to foreground (previously only on cold launch).

Security:
Trial timer hardened against device-clock rollback.

Housekeeping:
Removed the dormant "Reset & Restructure" button (superseded by the safer "back up first → factory reset → re-personalize" workflow).
Internal refactors + a slightly smaller binary.
