### 2/5 — No way to test it

*2025-05-08, version 4.0.7*

Installed this intending to test how well it works. Happy to pay for it if it seems useful but it was unable to identify a blackbird and i was unable to access recordings without upgrading to pro.

### 3/5 — Works well

*2025-05-04, version 4.0.5*

Had issues when developers changed to the much maligned subscription model, but reinstall fixed it.

### 2/5 — Moved to a subscription model - avoid.

*2025-03-14, version 4.0.5*

This was a great app I purchased and recommended to others but now it’s £19.99 a year with a discount for the first year. I might delete it.

Absolutely superb.

### 5/5 — Brilliant app

*2024-04-10, version 3.4.5*

Fun to use and pretty accurate. Didn’t realise how many different birds were around!

### 5/5 — Identification

*2024-04-01, version 3.4.4*

This helps me so much as a person with hearing impairment to categorise so many different calls at the same time . Wonderful.

### 3/5 — Rubbish

*2024-03-24, version 3.4.4*

This app is hilarious - every bird is a bittern - it never got even the obvious ones right! Don’t waste your money unless you really need some bewildered laughter in your life

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Sad decline

*2025-06-26, version 4.0.9*

This used to be one of the best bird apps and is now one of the worst. Unreliable and slow; and all my previous data history was lost when I upgraded the app’s software some years ago - when I contacted the helpline, I was surprised to speak to an actual human being rather than having a response from an automated assistant but sadly that person admitted that there had been “some issues” when updating the software and that others had faced the same problem - but no apology and no way to retrieve the data. Even now (post update) the app is glitchy. Great shame.

### 1/5 — Random

*2024-09-21, version 4.0.0*

Just makes up random birds. Do not download this app just get Merlin bird ID instead it’s much better.

### 1/5 — Not user friendly at all

*2024-08-08, version 4.0.0*

Firstly, this app is a fail from the very first page after opening it for first time. It prevents you from even registering on it or using the app, if you do not allow location. That is rodiculous. An ID app should not need that info to provide a result. Users should be able to select a location if they so wish but this app is onviously cheating. To prevent use without sharing your location is just poor. I deleted and ised a paid for app which does not for e these practises. This app also only allows id from kive audio! Poor, very poor.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2024-05-20, version 3.4.5*

This app suggest birds than identifies. Owls, buzzards, 2 types of woodpeckers suggested - none of which were in my garden….:

### 1/5 — Very frustrating

*2024-05-06, version 3.4.5*

On first using the app I was impressed with the recording and level of sound as well as the quick and accurate identification of the birds. However less than a week in and I am increasingly frustrated as the identifications become more random and there is no information given about the bird as to the likelihood that you would hear it in that place at this time of year. The instructions are minimal and the device keeps playing the same recording over and over without me being able to work out why. Do I have to say yes to the identification given before it will stop? Very frustrating - I feel I have to teach rather than learn. Maybe it is a giant collector of mis-identified birdsong. On one occasion it identified something really weird but I can’t get back into see at this point because that is another strange aspect of the app it doesn’t allow me to side swipe the recordings it goes to a black screen and keeps playing the touched listed recording over and over. Not happy…….

### 1/5 — Gave Up!

*2024-04-03, version 3.4.4*

I really wanted this to work as it is easy to use, only trouble is it gave me more or less the same three birds each time, no matter what I was recording. An owl, a dove and a cuckoo or a robin! I live in the country and have a lot of bird song, and am familiar with a lot of it, and a lot I need to identify. I do know what I am listening to is not any of the above! Shame but not fit for purpose sadly.

### 1/5 — Problems with iPhone

*2024-04-02, version 3.4.4*

Worked fine until the winter. As I hadn’t used the app for a while it disappeared into the cloud. Upon reinstalling it simply didn’t work - eventually I realised that the “recordings” were silent. The permissions had changed so there was no permission for the microphone, but the app never suggested that. Surely microphone access should be flagged? It went through the motions of “recording” and “checking”, and the troubleshooting just said I was holding the phone wrong or to switch to the bottom Mike.

UPDATE

Sorry developer - you are wrong - if you go to settings and turn off microphone permissions then try to use the app it will look as if there is nothing wrong, “record” a silent recording then tell you it is a lesser spotted woodpecker, skylark or lapwing. In my case the microphone permissions has disappeared without me doing it. There is nothing wrong with my microphone and I did try troubleshooting. The app needs to warn you if it cannot access the microphone. When you restore permissions it works fine, and I know now to check, but it shouldn’t be a possible scenario.

### 1/5 — Rubbish!

*2023-08-17, version 3.4.3*

I’m sorry to say that in my experience this app is unreliable and comes out with rubbish. For instance, I used it to try and differentiate between a dunlin and a sandpiper, and it told me I was listening to an eagle owl!!! That’s just one example - I’ve listened to warblers and it’s given me one which is totally alien to the area I’m in … I could go on, but I have no time to waste on either the review or the app

### 1/5 — App crashes frequently

*2023-02-21, version 3.2.9*

Used to be robust, but has started to crash in recent weeks - please fix it!

### 1/5 — Crashes.

*2023-02-12, version 3.2.9*

Don't know what to say. Used to like this app. Came to use it in the new forest today. App repeatedly crashed - meaning it's unusable.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — This is epic!

*2026-08-07, version 4.2.3*

Wallace and Gromit would be proud to have this on their list of ‘matic’ inventions.

### 5/5 — A great way to connect with nature wherever you are.

*2025-11-02, version 4.1.4*

A delightful way to connect with nature wherever you are.
Whether I’m sitting in the park or simply walking through town, this app makes it easy to identify birds by their songs. If I hear a bird I don’t recognize — or can’t see — I just open the app and let it listen. The recognition is impressively accurate, and even when it offers a few possibilities, it becomes a fun little investigation. It leaves room for curiosity while still giving very clear leads. Perfect both for learning more about birds and for simply enjoying the moment and the satisfaction of discovery.

### 5/5 — Spot on every time!

*2025-07-03, version 4.0.9*

One of my favourite apps. No annoying as or extra subscriptions. Quick and straightforward to use and educational!

### 5/5 — Black Bird

*2025-06-18, version 4.0.9*

Accurate ID first time!

### 5/5 — Just love this app.

*2025-06-06, version 4.0.8*

This app could not easier to use. Im constantly grabbing my phone to identify yet another chirruping friend in the sky. I just love it !!!

### 5/5 — A great app

*2025-05-21, version 4.0.7*

This app is well worth paying for. It records accurately and on testing with recordings of known birds it was right every time.

### 5/5 — Love this app!

*2025-05-08, version 4.0.7*

Am slowly learning the songs of my local birds :)

### 5/5 — Lovely to know what I’m listening to

*2025-03-30, version 4.0.5*

Love this app, so simple to use. I live next to a little woods and the birdsong is deafening at times, in a lovely way of course :) and it’s so nice to be able to identify the bird and just close my eyes with a cup of coffee in my hand and focus in on that.

### 5/5 — Love it always so accurate

*2024-07-21, version 3.4.5*

I’ve learnt so much about bird sing. Just love it

### 5/5 — Like it

*2024-06-16, version 3.4.5*
