### 2/5 — It sort of works

*2023-09-30, version 3.4.4*

I bought it for using on the Apple Watch. The watch app doesn’t work at all, just a black screen. I’ve tried reinstalling and restarting my watch but there’s still nothing. The phone version seems good but I will stick to using the apps provided for free by their competitors.

### 3/5 — Not usable on a watch

*2022-04-28, version 3.2.2*

You can only record the songs on the watch, you can’t ID or analyze at all on the watch app. ):
You must also use the phone to even look at watch recordings.
It’s a phone app. It’s not the same on the watch.

### 2/5 — Inaccurate

*2021-07-31, version 2.2.1*

I’m sitting just about face to face with a bird and recording the sound. The “results” aren’t even close!

### 2/5 — Very limited functionality

*2021-07-29, version 2.2.1*

I have not found this app to work, really ever. I limit background noise as much as possible, hold as still as possible, and get as close as possible and end up with incorrect identifications 90-95% of time. Just a heads up.

### 2/5 — Meh

*2021-06-26, version 2.2.1*

I found that this app has a hard time identifying the right birds.

### 5/5 — Sounds of Nature

*2021-05-04, version 2.2.1*

What a wonderful tool to give me an absolute additional joy of nature and most especially birds!
When my daughter was a little girl about three years old I purchased her a book that identified the picture in the sound of birds as she still remembers listening to a bird and saying “mommy that’s a yellow bellied sap sucker” so when I showed her the ChirpOMatic now when we go on walks we stop and record some of the bird sounds that we hear that are unique to our area this is such an awesome tool!

### 5/5 — PERFECT FOR UNTRAINED BIRD LOVERS

*2021-04-17, version 2.2.1*

Some birdsongs are obvious, many are not. When you can’t see it but you hear it and you gotta know what it is, this is what you need. On 2 occasions, the app didn’t find it. There is a feature where you can submit for further analysis and you get an email. One turned out to be a squirrel, (stranger than typical squirrel sounds), the other a tree toad (that was apparently up pretty high in a tree). But if it is a real bird, the app will get it; if there are more than one type of bird, it will often nail 2 or 3.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2021-01-02, version 2.2.1*

Very disappointing! Realize I just wasted my money!

### 1/5 — Want my money back

*2020-10-08, version 2.2.1*

No matter what, it gives me just about the same bird ids every time and none of them are right. Not one correct I’d? Not useful at all and waste of money sorry to say. Wish I knew how I could get money back

### 2/5 — A little disappointed

*2020-09-17, version 2.2.1*

How do you not have a pileated woodpecker on this app?

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Loved it until

*2025-05-03, version 4.0.1*

I paid for this app years ago, $6.99 and had years of catalogued birds and it was all erased because you went to the “pro” version when I already paid for it. I’m heartbroken, there was a flock of Sandhill Cranes I’d recorded, years worth and it’s all forever gone. If I’d never paid for it I would t be as disgusted as I am. Now I can’t use it at all unless I pay the yearly fee. I’ll gladly buy a different app

### 1/5 — The App no longer saves recordings!

*2025-04-26, version 4.0.1*

In the last month or so (March-April 2025), the App changed — it no longer saves my recordings! This appears to coincide with the rollout of a “Pro” feature that you have to pay for. But I already paid for the app last year. I feel cheated :(

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2025-04-19, version 4.0.1*

Not upfront about app costs, make sure you review info online before downloading.

### 1/5 — APP won’t open

*2024-06-27, version 4.0.0*

I purchased my APP on April 26, 2023.
I used it all last summer.
Now it’s Summer of 2024 and it doesn’t work.
Now it won’t open so I can’t use it, anymore. I click on the APP, on my screen, on my iPhone. It opens, to the APP picture of the bird, I then click on it and nothing happens. It says all old and existing customers can use the new subscription payment APP, for life and you won’t be charged. However, it doesn’t give directions to existing customers, to update to the new APP and be subscriber payment FREE. The Federal Trade Commission should be notified.
What else to old subscribers do?
It’s definitely compatible with my iPhone. That what is says.
Please advise.

### 1/5 — No sound

*2023-04-21, version 3.2.7*

I’ve had this app for years and the sound is no kk get working at all. I can’t play old recordings or the identifier. Sad news.

### 1/5 — App crashes when I hit the button to “identify”

*2021-08-08, version 2.2.1*

I paid for the app, recorded a birdsong in the app, pressed the identify button, and CRASH! iPad home screen pops up every time.

### 1/5 — Not even a single correct hit so far

*2021-07-05, version 2.2.1*

No, it’s not an owl. I’m not sure why it thinks everything is an owl other than that it’s not effective at its sole purpose. I regret this purchase and want my money back.

### 1/5 — Not worth it

*2021-04-26, version 2.2.1*

Had this for a couple years. Correctly ID’d a bird once.

### 1/5 — Not one bird has been identified

*2021-03-21, version 2.2.1*

Many attempts have failed to id even obvious birds.

### 1/5 — Look elsewhere

*2021-03-06, version 2.2.1*

Very seldom - maybe 20% - identifies bird

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Amazing application

*2026-08-28, version 4.2.3*

Our place backs up to the wetlands and lake and we get many different birds daily. The app does and excellent job of identifying them and is simple to use.

### 5/5 — Yes

*2026-05-22, version 4.2.1*

I’m just glad I have the American version. It has gotten almost 80% of mine but lately when it does catch the name of a bird the volume to hear the trip to compare is not working if you guys can fix it.

### 5/5 — Wonderful

*2025-07-22, version 4.0.9*

I paid for this app several years ago and then there was an update that seemed to have locked me out, appeared that all my recordings were gone and another fee was being tacked on. I left a rather scathing review because I was genuinely upset as I’m a hard core bird lover and the customer service was amazing, there was no added fee. I’m not sure what happened but I was frantic. I had years of birds catalogued because we lived under a migration path, even a pair of Mourning Doves that came to my backyard and I was heartbroken because it seemed I lost it all but the ending to my story is a happy one due to the customer service. This really is a phenomenon app, I live in Alberta, Canada and had no idea how many species of sparrows exist. It’s fun and I’ve learned so much. I would recommend to stop checking out other apps and get this one. Thank you again to customer service for calming me down and yes I still have my flock of Sandhills Cranes recorded!

### 5/5 — amazing app!!

*2024-06-09, version 4.0.0*

this app is very accurate and has helped me learned bird songs better than any other way I have tried. If you want to learn bird songs, including the variations, then this is the app for you! I love how the app also shows other similar species so you can really compare the species and learn the differences between them. This is a great app for birding!

### 5/5 — Bird Sounds

*2024-04-22, version 3.4.6*

I love to listen the sounds of our fine feathered friends. But sometimes I don’t know what kind of bird it is. That’s why I love this app. as it lets me know without fail what bird is delivering it’s beautiful sound.

### 5/5 — Lovely

*2024-01-03, version 3.4.5*

So nice to record birds in our area. Also, like the bird safe feature, I play these songs for our cockatiel to help him learn some new tweets.

### 5/5 — Right

*2023-07-19, version 3.4.4*

Right on the money. Got it first time.

### 5/5 — Bird Nerd Alert

*2023-07-14, version 3.4.4*

I’m a bit of an amateur bird nerd and love the Chirp O Matic app. There are other apps that work I’m similar ways, and I do use them. But one key feature of Chirp O Matic that I LOVE is, there is an Apple Watch version! No others bird ID app that I have found works with my watch. I don’t always take my phone on walks, so it’s nice to be able to quickly ID a bird song from my wrist. (Although it seems to have a bug at the moment.) The only thing I might say needs improvement would be to make the recording times longer. Definitely a must have a birder of any level of experience! Thanks!

### 5/5 — Fun App !

*2022-05-28, version 3.2.2*

Love being able to identify different birds by their song. Especially when they are hiding among the trees.

### 5/5 — Love Birds

*2021-06-08, version 2.2.1*

I really like this app but wish I could find some directions. I am old and not very good with this technology. I think I am missing some of the things the app can do.
