### 4/5 — Good overall, bad beginning.

*2019-03-14*

While this is one of my favorite Choice games, with characters you actually *care* about and meaningful choices, it's beginning is a large info-dump of exposition which was incredibly jarring and hard to follow. Finding what title meant what and what the social classes were shouldn't have taken a multiple paragraph pre-read in the built in lore book. Other than that, the book was an engaging read with multiple completely different endings and hidden choices. Unfortunately, during winter a few raids and events would repeat themselves. (Minor spoilers): The event where you raid the rich noble family with the guard on the top of the ladder you either fight or send others to fight I had occur twice in a playthrough. I'm pretty sure this is either a bug or an oversight, so I can forgive it more than the exposition.

### 5/5 — The best of the best

*2018-11-08, version 1.0.4*

Great story
Great characters
Deep lore
Choices matter
Incredible role playing experience.
Rereadable over and over again.

### 5/5 — Top Shelf

*2018-09-08, version 1.0.4*

This game/story has it all. Unique storyline, great character interactions, and very good pacing.
I really enjoyed the resource management! I enjoyed the struggle of surviving the winter, the character interactions and developments.
I have played a fair number of "Choice of" games and this is easily in my Top 4. I can not wait until the sequel comes out! I can't recommend this game enough!😄

### 5/5 — Incredible

*2018-08-29, version 1.0.4*

I play a lot of Choice games and none contend to the work put into this story

### 5/5 — Absolutely amazing

*2018-08-24, version 1.0.4*

You can tell that the author poured his heart and soul into this game. It’s quite long and really feels like you have control of the story. I’m very eagerly awaiting the next one! This is up there with the hero rising storyline.

### 5/5 — Worth it

*2018-08-04*

This is by far one of my favourite stories it is engaging fun and unique though it might be a bit pricey it is completely worth it. It also has a lot of replayability ive played through it multiple times it is a great game for someone who loves books and fighting type games/stories

### 5/5 — Challenging, Immersive, Fun

*2018-07-18*

This story gets you fully immersed into the character you decide to play as. You become as paranoid or scared as your character, genuinely worried about survival. I'm giving this game a solid five stars, but it is not without flaws. While the game itself is very fun to play, it is only part one. The ending of this story does not give the player a great amount of satisfaction at the ending, and the end feels slightly rigged. That's just been my experience, however, and I don't doubt that I could be wrong. Definitely worth the buy, but fair warning, you'll be waiting eagerly for a part two to come out once you do.

### 5/5 — Way beyond the scope of most Choice of games

*2018-06-02*

This game blew me away. I never expected to see a Choice of game that had a resource management mechanic, as well as such a strong and compelling story. I can't wait to see what comes next.

### 5/5 — Quite good

*2018-05-17, version 1.0.1*

I'd like to see part two

### 5/5 — Next

*2018-05-15, version 1.0.4*

When will the next chapters come out?! This is the best book ever!!

### 5/5 — Best CoG Release

*2018-04-14*

- The amount thought that was put into the characters and world is outstanding. It feels like the world truly exists outside the immediate action.
- Choices always feel important, as the author has been extremely thorough in providing a variety of moving parts and diverse consequences.
- Unlike many other CoG games, the stats are kept concise, and actually affect the story in meaningful ways.
- Establishment of the protagonist is very well written and provides numerous fully-fleshed out possibilities. The amount of options given regarding the protagonist's personality/motivations throughout the game really make you feel in control.
- Management is challenging and immersive; the game has a much grittier and more gripping atmosphere.
- Down with the hegemony!

Overall, probably the best CoG game that I've played.

### 5/5 — Best “Choice Of” Game Yet

*2018-04-11*

Choice of Rebels is the best one yet. Not only is there a large setting, but there are many options about your character’s origin. Further on, the aftermath of your choices is extensive and impressive, especially when it’s easy to get attached to the game’s characters. I can’t wait for the next game!

### 5/5 — One of the best so far

*2018-03-09*

One of my favourite books from the company so far. Great story, and great replay value.

### 5/5 — Great story!

*2018-02-23, version 1.0.1*

It’s a great story and your choices have weight to them. Go with your gut? Your heart? Your head? Give it a shot.

### 5/5 — Absolutely amazing

*2018-02-05*

I can’t wait for the next part. Trust me when I say it’s worth the price

### 5/5 — Great Experience

*2018-02-04, version 1.0.1*

Story was fun and engaging, amazing plot so far, extremely unique. Can’t wait for the part 2, hope you are working on it already!

Loved Breden by the way, one of the better written characters out there.

### 5/5 — A must-experience for any fan of fantasy, or admirer of choice-driven gameplay.

Choice of Rebels: Uprising, is easily one of the best immersive fantasy experiences to emerge in the last few years, or, indeed, ever. It succeeds at being both an incredibly engaging game, and an utterly engrossing work of fiction – on a level with the contemporary greats of the fantasy genre.

Joel Havenstone has constructed such an astoundingly rich world, that it is startlingly easy to get lost in its unique history, diverse locales, and socio-economic struggles. It feels like a world that existed long before your arrival, and will exist long after, but you will leave your mark upon it, and it will leave its mark upon you.

Taking on the role of a noble from a house of floundering renown, or as a helot (a member of the slave-caste) you will embark upon the start of a journey that unlike many others. The identity of your character is whatever you will make of them – gender, personality, sexuality, skills. An astounding series of divergent routes, hinge upon your myriad choices, enough to ensure that no two playthroughs are ever the same.

The decisions you make, and there are many of them, will transform your lot, and the lot of all those who look to you for guidance. Most impressively, morality is not punished, and the great many options you receive are most often spectacularly nuanced. There is no black-and-white, no good or bad decisions. The narrative is not there to punish, but to enable you. Events that start off ruthless can end altruistic by your hand, or great kindnesses can be undertaken for entirely selfish reasons. This is a world of greys, and no two shades are ever the same.

Those who relish the works of George R.R. Martin, or Joe Abercrombie will find a great deal to fall in love with across the vivid provinces of the oppressive Karagond Hegemony, and beyond. The writing is mature, balancing hope and inspiration with brutal realisms, all clearly well researched and passionately formulated. This is a living, breathing adventure.

The characters you will meet come alive across the series of struggles, and kinships you share with them, and it is to you to decide who will you draw close, and who you will push away.

Choice of Rebels: Uprising is something truly special. A must-experience for any fan of fantasy, or admirer of choice-driven gameplay. It marks the first instalment in a series that promises to delight, despair, and mesmorise anyone fortunate enough to find it.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 2/5 — Good story..too many option blunders

*2017-11-25*

I’ve enjoyed the plot and character development of the first chapter. However, I’ve run into too many option blunders that leave me 1) starting over because the game didn’t save my progress 2) stuck in an unending loop during the winter, without the option to move forward or back in the storyline to fix the food rations (which is really frustrating given how long and tedious the winter decisions can be), or 3) storyline/plot inconsistencies that don’t make sense (I.e. a very successful raid which brought in plenty of food, but resulted in disbandment of the rebel group and loss of leader trust). Fix the storyline blunders, and I’ll bump this up to a 4 Star. Develop more complex characters, and this would be a 5 Star.

### 2/5 — -

*2017-11-14, version 1.0.1*

I’m too early in to make a final judgement, this review reflects my early game experience.
Firstly, there are very little indications, telling you who you are.
I wasn’t aware I was from another kingdom until it came up in a speech option...I also have no idea what age I am...
secondly, the words are too...confusing, you honestly get chucked straight into it with very little help.
Thirdly, the game has this very irritating habit of resetting my progress to the start of chapter one after getting a few pages in...

### 2/5 — Has potential

*2017-11-11*

I like the world being built here. I do think this is a jargon heavy game which could have had better character development. There is a weird thing going on with the romance options (e.g., if you like men, the second RO is always a woman and is attracted to you, so you would switch your orientation to start something with them?). Why? Winter was really long and got boring. Still, I can see how this could become a decent series; the world itself is interesting and you can play from different perspectives. I'm not sure I would want to play a second installment though unless the style/approach changed a little bit.

### 2/5 — An Unfortunate Slog

*2017-11-10, version 1.0.1*

There are two schools of COG games: those that excel at character development, and those heavy on jargon. This, it seems, is from the latter.

Stats are cemented early on, so the PC doesn’t evolve. Characters are hurled at you, and are forgettable if not for the codex entries. Much of the time is spent trying to survive winter, but instead of raising tension, it becomes a bore.

Mercifully, there are a few checkpoints, but the content doesn’t inspire replays. The two endings I did find are abrupt, and I found I didn’t care.

### 3/5 — Fantastic but only pt1

*2017-11-19*

I would give this 4 stars but it’s only part 1 of the story. It’s beautifully written and I’m looking forward to the rest, but it’s not there.

The game focuses around tactics of the rebellion and notable events during a single winter. Also math. There’s a lot of math... which you can technically choose the option to skip but it seems to put you at a real disadvantage. It also does take away from game as you are trying to figure out more how many heads you need to feed and less grand moral quandaries or standing really for anything but banditry.

There are some really interesting characters, but the story doesn’t really allow you to get to know them, which is too bad because the author obviously created a very rich world to draw from.

All in all, I am really looking forward to the next instalment of the story and I hope that we get to explore the world and characters more.

### 3/5 — Lots of effort went into world building, but story was decent

*2017-11-13, version 1.0.1*

As someone else also mentioned, it was good until the winter part. It all goes downhill from there.

I really wasn't a fan of the winter writing style, and allocating your soldiers to all those tasks was bearable at first but got too long and boring as winter dragged on. For the second book, I suggest keeping with the writing style in the part before/after winter.

Most of the characters were just too shallow. In the Infinity books, characters like Cazarosta and Elson are so memorable and have such distinct and complex personalities. This story has one or two decent characters like your father (noble route), but by the time winter comes he's barely mentioned and just fades into the background.

In conclusion, this story had some really in depth story building, but the story was pretty weak and boring. Hope the second book is better.

### 3/5 — Alright

*2017-11-10*

I've played almost every single choice of game on the App Store. This wasn't a bad one but it wasn't amazing either. Unlike Sabres of Infinity or Way Walkers which had outstanding characters that were memorable... this doesn't. I found it interesting until winter. It was so boring. After the winter "stage" it go alright. It seems so unfinished and dull. It reminded of the Banner Saga! But without interesting characters and a gripping story.

### 4/5 — Love this one

*2023-10-17*

You get a choices in the beginning that impact the late game, the story is spectacular, and if you pick the right route them you gain access to magic. There is also a random gen in it to randomly spring up events or even if you do something exactly the same as before the choices you made can have an either or effect. All in all a great game. I’m just curious when the next portion is coming out.

### 4/5 — Love it

*2022-05-19, version 1.0.5*

I love interactive adventure stories like this. I finished the first one and it said a second would be out soon but can’t tell if it’s going to happen or not.

### 4/5 — Extremely good, but not worth the price

*2019-11-07, version 1.0.4*

Honestly enjoyed the game to its most, but it’s not even the full game, and I wouldn’t doubt the next parts are the same price. If you lowered the price, it would be worth the money, but I could get better and more for the same price

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best choice of story game so far

*2022-12-04, version 1.0.5*

I’ve played around 20 of these games and I’d say this is the best one in terms of engagement/immersion, difficult choices, and differences your choices actually make. Well done. I eagerly await the sequel.

### 5/5 — Love this game

*2020-07-20, version 1.0.4*

I am beyond shocked at how much I would fall in love with this game, I am truly lost for words and can’t wait for part 2

### 5/5 — Phenomenal writing and world building

*2020-01-20*

As someone who has played quite a few choice-driven narratives, I can confidently say that this is without a doubt the best out there. The writing is excellent, the world engaging and interesting; you’d be hard-presses to find another that rivals the quality of Choice of Rebels: Uprising.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2019-12-20, version 1.0.4*

Amazing story. I can’t wait till the next one comes out. It would be neat to add some kind of cheat system I think. I would like to go back and do it again with like a money cheat or an influence and stat cheat. Just to see what all I could do with it

### 5/5 — A Brilliant Read, Even Better Narrative Gameplay

*2019-10-11*

This is my all time favorite from the Choice of Games library. Choice of Rebels: Uprising’s immaculately written branching story allows for tremendous possibilities which create a deeply immersive experience. The rebellion is as much a character as your main character as you directly influence both. Are you a charismatic revolutionary trying to smash every corrupt Hegemonic institution (all of them) or are you a brilliant strategist plotting to overthrow the government with as little shake up to the status quo as possible (you bourgeoisie bastard). Trying to survive in the wilderness while being hunted was so immersive it made me feel like I was in the film “Defiance” with Daniel Craig.

### 5/5 — Great

*2019-07-26, version 1.0.4*

One of the best, immersive story, plenty of freedom and well developed characters. When’s part two ?

### 5/5 — Not only an amazing game but an amazing story

*2019-06-18*

The author clearly approaches this as a novel that can be played as a game rather than a game that can be read as a novel. This leads to compelling characters, thought provoking themes, and an endlessly fascinating world. Your choices heavily affect the outcomes later in the game. I’ve played through the entire thing multiple times and I’m still not even close to being tired of it. Can’t wait for the sequel.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2019-04-24, version 1.0.4*

Good story with a lot more depth than I was expecting..definitely worth getting

### 5/5 — We need a book two!

*2019-04-09, version 1.0.4*

Please!

### 5/5 — Hurry and make the new one!

*2018-11-11, version 1.0.4*

I need the new book!!! Please!
