It’s a great game, but I wouldn't buy it again because there’s no follow-through from the writers. Only invest in this series if you are okay with an infinite cliffhanger. ### 3/5 — Very engaging story, but… *2021-09-27, version 3.0.8* Somewhere around Saint Louis your save can be corrupted over time. Restoring a quicksave will speed this process up, eventually ensuring every value, including your name, is now inaccurate. A real bummer because by this time you’ve already invested in your character quite a bit. No idea what lies beyond the StL because my character was completely different on chapter change a third of the way through. ### 4/5 — bug *2021-04-12, version 3.0.7* there’s a major bug: if you’re German, have a high level of strength, or are taught strength by Carothers, it restarts the game and doesn’t let you into chapter 4. Wish the story focused more on the vampire aspect and less on the overall history. Quite wordy and times and to be honest, a bit boring. Choices did not feel like they impacted my story. Clotho arc was my favorite part but even that could have been done better. Below average game for a very above average studio. (Are you guys a studio or like authors? Not sure what to call you. “Studio-thors?” “Auth-ios?” 🤔) ### 2/5 — Confusing, not well written *2018-06-29, version 2.3.1* I had trouble following the story, and there were so many characters that weren’t all listed in the sides, I lost track. That you couldn’t see what your relationship level was with people was a real issue too. Also, the best Choice of Games stories flow well. They are stories you want to see what happens next in. This one did not flow well at all, it couldn’t keep my attention very well. ### 2/5 — Terrible storytelling ruins what might have been great *2018-06-18, version 2.3.1* The author of this story is in love with historical facts. Reading through pages of these without them having any meaningful impact is tedious. Furthermore, the author has not bothered to make the reader care about their own character. Scenes jump quickly where there should have been meaningful character interaction. A lot of tell instead of show but yet again another page full of useless facts. The reader is often asked to make choices based on a mere paragraph of actual information about characters or what consequences might arise from the decision. ### 3/5 — Misleading *2018-03-01, version 2.3.0* The description of the game says that you begin a 200 year journey as a vampire but this first part only goes about 50 years or so. You have to purchase each part of the story individually and as of right now it isn’t even complete. Consider that you may never get to finish the story that you start. That being said, if they complete the story and put it in one app with one price tag, I would say that it would be worthwhile. The writing is decent and the inclusion of historical settings is appreciated. ### 3/5 — Could be better *2018-02-10, version 2.3.0* The story could have been better written. If it were, I think it would have left a better impression on me and been a lot more engaging. It was too much history and not enough of how that history affected the player character and the vampire society. So many names were thrown around and characters introduced but very little time or development was given to them that I felt no attachment to any of them unless I forced myself to care. Sometimes it seemed the story would be pushing certain characters or pathways or even traits onto the player. There were some good aspects of the game, like the romance with Silas, but those were few and far between. ### 4/5 — So good!!! But... *2017-07-09, version 2.3.0* I originally played this around 5 years ago and I've been waiting for more. I played the Memphis thing already. If you are not going to continue work on it, could you at least make the description of it less misleading. It promises to span 200 years. We've covered what, 57 years so far? Satisfying vengeance with blowing up a certain traitorous vampire after he killed me the last play-through. But I can't fathom why I'm asked to pay another 3$ for the, what, second installment? I could go buy 3 books for that much, including the price of inconvenience. You have good stories here, but not God-tier ones. ### 3/5 — Amazing Alas not worth it *2016-08-26, version 2.2.0* I would honestly give this game 5 stars if it was t for it being A little short compared to other games worth the same amount. It's is for how long it lasts is quite enjoyable well written and really interesting but it's pretty short and you need to pay for part two. And I'd say part two isn't really worth it either it just isn't as great as the first one I found it to bland and once again short for its price. But yet with those flaws I'd still like to see longer more worth it work from this Arthur because his/hers writing is amazing and captivating and use the stats in away to make it truly matter and sometimes can even bring events not even mentioned with out the skills to come across it. ### 3/5 — Incomplete *2016-05-29, version 2.2.0* Well written, but absolutely nothing happens. ### 4/5 — Amazing game, recommended. *2016-04-29, version 2.2.0* This is yet another in the long line of great CYOA style games. I loved every page of it. The amount of choice you have when deciding your character is admirable but the story is just really, really slow. There isn't much to really grip me which is sad because I love most of COG's stories and I was really looking forward to enjoying this. But no matter, if you don't mind a story that "takes its time" and is very, very subdued then go on ahead, it is still a fine premise. Also not to mention that if you show no interest in a secondary character they just get written off as dying off screen and that's just really, really, frustrating. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Slow story line *2017-01-01, version 2.2.0* The story progresses very slowly. The stats are too complicated, take Choice of the dragon, for example, which is a bit short, but has three basic stat "opposites". Also, you have to read too much before making a choice. I feel like you have to read very carefully and pay attention to every small detail to make a choice. I suppose I thought games were meant to be entertainment, not this involved. Anyway, if you read this far, I noticed that in the beginning, when choosing your name, I tried doing 'Cullen' (I know, I loved Twilight, and I am kind of 'obsessed') and it wouldn't let me. It said 'this is a no-twinkle zone' and 'are you going to chase Bella around like a wounded puppy'. Even when I tried using a different first name, it is for last names. This was a bit annoying, because 1. If it is because the makers don't like twilight, they I should keep their personal views out of the game or 2. If they don't want you 'copying' one of the Cullens, well, you could just be in their coven as yourself. ### 1/5 — Don't buy *2016-10-06, version 2.2.0* First of all this story is short, it ended really unexpectedly for me. Then you have to buy the other instalment to continue!! I couldn't make it very far at all and ended up deleting it off my phone without finishing. I was sorely disappointed. The writing's mediocre (though it attempts to disguise that by finding the "fanciest" alternatives possible from the thesaurus), the story's uninteresting, & important events which could greatly improve or clarify the situation/storyline are glossed over. On top of the boredom, you don't even get the full story - you have to pay an additional $3 (& install a whole other app) for the "second part." ### 1/5 — Needs fix *2014-01-03, version 2.1.2* I have played some of the other games created by choice games, and I really enjoyed them. No matter what I do; i.e restart the game, my stats won't reset to 50/50. Whenever I restart, anachronism is at 99/1, spirituality is at 85/15, etc. this ends up blocking a lot of potential choices. Please fix this ### 1/5 — Total Ripoff *2013-10-05, version 2.0.3* The game itself was fun, but it only took me about an hour to finish; it did not have any sort of conclusion whatsoever. It then directed me to the second part of the story, which would cost me another $3 and got horrible reviews. No, thanks. I bought this game a long time ago (probably summer of last year) and yet there still isn't a chapter two? If Choice of Games isn't going to update the story then it should be free, and shouldn't mention a chapter two. If they can't release updates for their games within a year, then obviously they aren't fit to be putting paid apps on the store. Of all the Choice of Game titles, I think this game is one of the best at giving you very nuanced choices. You can create a morally complex character with an interesting background and many facets to their personality. I don't think the choices change the overall structure of the story too much, but they create a deep and satisfying role-playing experience. On the downside, the stats system seems underdeveloped. There were many stats, and it's not clear what half of them do (streetwise, technology, lore, etc.) Most of them never seemed to be of any use in the story. Second, it is not clear from the app description that this is supposed to be the first game in a trilogy. It ends quite abruptly, and I would've appreciated some warning beforehand. ### 5/5 — Anne Rice would be proud *2015-12-22, version 2.2.0* I love this CoG title. Its setting does, however, seem taken directly out of an Anne Rice vampire novel.
