### 2/5 — Can't load music from local files

*2025-04-01, version 2.3.5*

Why can't I load music from my files except Apple Music?
You guys should copy from Chord AI!!

### 4/5 — Wow

*2022-04-06, version 2.3.3*

Works nicely. Can’t figure out why only 2 songs are displaying from library

### 1/5 — Unless updated: DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!

*2021-06-29, version 2.3.2*

Needs MAJOR UPDATING!!! Playback issues

### 2/5 — Great concept, poor execution

*2021-04-11, version 2.3.2*

The functions are very nice, generating chords and showing them for piano or guitar, with transpose options. The problem is it doesn’t recognize the license for newly downloaded songs. If they get to fix that, It will be a hard to beat app.

### 3/5 — You Still Need a Pretty Good Ear

*2021-01-06, version 2.3.2*

Over all it’s okay. It gives a pretty good idea of key and works well for major chords. But it has difficulty distinguishing between Major 7ths and Minor chords (like Cmaj7 and Em for instance), and it misses subtle chord changes a lot (C to C7 for instance). But it’s free and it provides a solid start, so 3 stars.

### 5/5 — useful

*2021-01-03, version 2.3.2*

perfect for simple chord structure... don't need to be a genius to figure out super detailed chords when knowing the bass bite of any chords... only think i would love to see added is an auto metronome for reference

### 3/5 — How to see my song?

*2020-10-20, version 2.3.2*

How to see my song?

### 5/5 — In tears...

*2020-08-03, version 2.3.2*

It is very difficult to make a 69 yr old male cry, but this app did it.
I have several orchestrated pieces that I wanted to play on my guitar and found it extremely difficult to find each chord. Not only does this app find the chords (almost always perfectly), it also shows the piano and guitar fingering when you select a note. And, free? God bless you.

### 1/5 — Try to connect with dropbox

*2020-06-10, version 2.3.2*

I try to connect with drop box but doesn’t work.i don’t know how to use it.can not connect to phone library too

### 5/5 — The Absolute best Chord Recognition app

*2020-06-01, version 2.3.2*

As long as you load your audio into ITUNES( only drawback) , it does a stellar job, not to mention you can send chords to PSR keyboards

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — This used to be a great app, until Yamaha nerfed it recently!

*2026-02-14, version 2.3.5*

The previous version of Yamaha Chord Tracker allowed a device’s microphone to listen to music in real-time and identified the notes/chords being heard, even allowing for capo adjustments to see how best to play a song. Their most recent update removed this feature, so now it is only useful to identify songs you own, loaded into the app in MP3/4 format, although some users are reporting they can’t even get this feature to work now. Super disappointing, Yamaha, please bring back the chord identifier/analysis functionality, if you are indeed truly interested in helping guitar players improve their playing skills! Right now, I’m considering deleting this app to make space for better and more useful ones.

### 1/5 — Disappointing!

*2026-02-01, version 2.3.5*

I just downloaded this app with some hope to be able to hear the different instruments on selected songs. I understand copyright but the selection of songs that popped up was short of nothing. And those that did pop-up would not even play. Very disappointed in this app. Not even worth it being in the App Store.

### 1/5 — Not possible to load local files

*2026-01-19, version 2.3.5*

I have several audio files on my iPad I wanted to transcribe, but there is no easy way to load them. This app only supports loading from DropBox or Music collection. Other apps support loading local files. In my opinion all Yamaha products have terrible user interface, either hardware or software.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t Work

*2025-09-02, version 2.3.5*

App doesn’t see the hundreds of MP3’s on my device. Useless. Just wants to collect song data and nothing in its user materials or manual describes use of Dropbox, which is apparently the only way you can x-fer music to the app. Lame.

### 1/5 — Ayuda y soporte

*2024-07-18, version 2.3.4*

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2024-07-01, version 2.3.4*

Connects to Dropbox somehow…yet doesn’t tell you what folder and shows no songs. Can’t record anything because it needs to connect to a Yamaha device apparently…

### 1/5 — Playback timing out of sync on iPad Pro

*2024-04-11, version 2.3.4*

Something is wrong with the app on iPad Pro m1. The audio gets ahead of the score by up to two measures over the course of a pop song.
Try Billy Joel uptown girl from iTunes library and you’ll see

### 1/5 — Not useful

*2023-03-31, version 2.3.3*

I purchased this app so I could easily translate my original music on my phone to show chords. It does not tell you before purchase that the only songs you can transcribe are song that are in your iPhone “music” app. There is no way that I have found to transfer songs from my phone files into the app. Completely useless to me. Can I get a refund??

### 1/5 — Playback timing slow on iPad Pro

*2023-01-25, version 2.3.3*

Something is wrong with the app on iPad Pro m1. The audio gets ahead of the score by up to two measures over the course of a pop song.

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your time or data. Get Chord AI instead.

*2021-10-17, version 2.3.3*

With this app you can only use songs that you have created or music that doesn’t have any copyrights. So nothing from YouTube or other music streaming apps. Also, only piano and guitar chords are displayed. Chord AI’s free version comes with one extra instrument’s chords; piano, guitar and the ukulele(gCEA). Chord AI recognizes more chords right out the gate. Oh, I should mention that Chord AI allows you to upload any song from YouTube, Apple Music and other music streaming apps, as well as from your own recordings. Even the copy-written music works with Chord AI. Chord AI allows you to save the songs and the chords it has discovered for later, offline use.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Frank Fiore

*2025-08-12, version 2.3.5*

Excelente ayuda

### 5/5 — Sandbox, please in files app

*2024-12-30, version 2.3.5*

Hi, i love Yamaha Chord Tracker app, but there is only one thing is left: there is not a folder on FILES APP, where i would able to save songs from safari and use on Yamaha Chord Tracker app

### 5/5 — The only app that can correctly recognize some J-pop chords

*2023-12-19, version 2.3.3*

I have tried a lot of different other similar apps, but only this Yamaha app can correctly distinguish between Bm7b5 and G7/B, between GM7/F and F, F/G and G7. I strongly recommend this app for recognizing J-pop chords.

It would be better if we can have a PC version or Web version, because importing through Dropbox is very inconvenient.

### 5/5 — Cool app

*2023-08-17, version 2.3.3*

I’m really enjoying this app

### 5/5 — Simple and Functional

*2023-07-26, version 2.3.3*

The simplest route to learning a song. It just works. Tune the guitar up, chords get you n the right place most of the time, and picking up melody/harmony patterns is intuitive after that. Slowing a song produces artifacts but that doesn’t take away from learning. I find myself using it to learn bass parts. Makes learning death/prog metal guitar parts much easier when 70-80% of the tempo.

### 5/5 — Amazing Free App

*2022-10-19, version 2.3.3*

Fantastically useful app to learn to play chords by allowing you to play along with songs on your phone. Also the ability to slow the tempo of the song without changing its pitch is very helpful it learning a song. Truly unbelievable that this app is free. Thank you Yamaha!!

### 5/5 — Best engine, needs print or export as PDF option

*2022-08-27, version 2.3.3*

Please throw in a print option for the generated chores!

### 5/5 — Very Cool 😎

*2022-08-10, version 2.3.3*

I honestly don’t get all the complaints this app is getting. The UI is great, with customization as well, the features it has are very helpful and it is also precise with its track sync! 🤷‍♂️
What else do want from a free app?

### 5/5 — 5 star

*2022-02-01, version 2.3.3*

This is my favorite app as a worship leader.

### 5/5 — High Marks Indeed

*2021-07-15, version 2.3.2*

This app has all the features I’ve ever wanted in a chord analyzer app, with a uniquely intuitive functionality/interface that is beyond anything I’d have ever thought to want. Meaning, it does what it says it’ll do, and more, better.

*Sadly, it works only with songs owned by you, sans DRM, uploaded to your Mac’s iTunes, and synced with your iPhone and Apple Music account. That leaves a lot of music—all acquired and owned legally—not compatible with this app. Meaning, it works with only an extremely small set of songs.
