Could be GREAT *2021-10-24, version 2.3.1* I have this app on my iPhone and Mac and use it often. It's good. But to be GREAT… Add MIDI chord detection (for piano). Then this would easily be a five-star app. Nothing currently on the app store chord-detection as a stand-alone app, and that killer feature would make it a must-have. ### 4/5 — Shows potential but overall good *2020-10-24, version 2.3.0* Transitioning from piano to guitar requires a different mindet, and to speed things along I chose this app to help with chord shapes etc. It works pretty well, easy to use but a few annoyances with the interface that could be fixed easily. 1] When selecting a chord, you have to scroll through to the fingering you require, it plays each selection once and when you stop there is no way (or not blindingly obvious) how to repeat the hearing of the chord. Some way of playing and repeating the chord would be appreciated. 2] When you scroll to a chord shape you require, then say select a min or dominant flavour, when you return back to the chord you had previous, it takes you back to chord number 1. Madly annoying if your chord is say 9 of 16. It beaks concentration having to constantly navigate back to your preferred chord position. Could you not make it so the numbered chord is remembered when you leave and return to it's group? 3] The ability to store a series of chords would be a great addition. I'm working through the ii-V-i major 7s right now so having them lined up and being able to quickly select them would be mind blowing. Right now i have to dial them in, hear the chord once, badly play it on my guitar, then have to navigate to the next note, dial in the next chord, hop to the desired position, hear it once,, play it badly, rinse repeat. I think you get the idea. Could be slicker. I think with these and a few more features this would be an app I would pay for. I'd even be happy to make a paypal donation as I appreciate the hard work that goes into making an app. This is a good app, clean interface, no nonsense, no adverts, but the effort to take it from good to excellent is a small step and hope it's something the developer will consider. ### 5/5 — ☝🏾🙂🎹👍🏾👍🏾 *2020-08-24, version 2.3.0* [“ i have it on my 💻 ipad & 📱 & to be honest even though i’ve studied music theory i dont know what i’d do if it were not for this app. very easy to use. i recommend to others all the time”] ### 5/5 — Amazing resource *2020-08-19, version 2.3.0* Originally got this app to help me learn some more about chord structure and to be able to see what notes make up these chords. Originally a guitar player but showing the piano chord shapes has made it enjoyable for me to toy around on the piano. I’ve got no complaints with the app, it is straightforward, easy to use and I’ve encountered no issues whatsoever. I recommend this to anybody wanting to learn more about chords and how to play them. ### 3/5 — Better - Still Room for Improvement *2020-06-20, version 2.0.0* I appreciate the developer taking the time to re-do the app. I like the format and the way the chords are displayed. I play guitar and noticed that the common ways to play some of the chords are deeper in the options. They should be the first option displayed. Keep up the good work. Hard to complain too much when an app is free. ### 5/5 — Love the design! *2020-06-19, version 2.0.0* Been using this for a while as it has way more variants than most websites and is much faster. Some of them are quite hard to play so it’s maybe not the best for beginners, but they’re all there! The biggest problem I have with the app is that the options screen is completely non functional the only 2 things you can set are name length and show note options and neither works at all. ### 4/5 — Minimalist MAGNIFICENCE *2017-10-17, version 1.8* This App is the Cleanest, Most Concise and Easiest Interface for Guitar Chords that I have EVER seen! Some GUI suggestions (I am only reviewing the Guitar interface.) 1. Center the whole face! On my iPhone it is tagged to the Top with way too much Empty space at the Bottom. Also make the Interface able to turn 180 degrees. 2. Add the Sound of each chord! 3. Provide Color Schemes for Users to choose from. This could evolve into the Absolute BEST Chording App on the App Store!!!!!! ### 5/5 — Amazing! *2017-10-12, version 1.5* As a dual musician I have never found a more functional app for chording charts that I could use and have that same information in a different format for another instrument! Do not use this app for learning chords. ### 1/5 — Not A Universal App *2022-09-26, version 2.3.1* I like the variety, however the usability is lacking here. The iPad version is basically a small iPhone UI with borders stretched to the edges to make it seem full screen. You have to pinch your eyes or hold the iPad closer because it’s hard to see and harder to use. The main point of having an iPad version in a music app is to use the extra screen space and processing power. My enjoyment turned to pure hate. Not a good strategy for getting good ratings. ### 1/5 — Too many wrong chords *2017-10-18, version 1.5* Too many wrong chords make it entirely unusable ### 1/5 — Some severe problems *2017-10-18, version 1.8* Context: I’m only interested in ukulele chords. The first chord variation shown is quite often not a common, easy fingering. I wonder if the different inversions were chosen by algorithm, and not by a uke player. Take a look at D minor, for example - there are seven variations; the very last one is the common one. This will be bewildering for the beginning player. I don’t know if this problem affects the banjo or guitar chords. In the iPad version, I can’t get any but the first chord variation to display. The series of dots in iOS apps typically indicates that swiping left or right will show different information; in this app, swiping does nothing. In the iPhone version, I found by frustrating trial and error that tapping on the left or right of the dots works. Even setting aside this bizarre user interface choice, at least it works on the iPhone. Not so on the iPad. I tapped away like a lunatic on every square centimeter of the screen, and I can’t get the app to show any but the first uke chord variation. This bug doesn’t affect banjo or guitar chords. I do like the appearance, but the interface is weird and un-idiomatic; in the case of the iPad, it’s unusable. It doesn’t support split screen mode, which absolutely should be fixed, but not before those other problems. ### 2/5 — A good start but could be so much more *2021-02-12, version 2.3.1* Chordology runs fine on my laptop runing OS 11.2. My compliments to the originator of the program for his efforts. Chordology has the potential to be much more helpful if 1) The baritone ukulele was included as an instrument, 2) the chord notes were shown and 3) the note scale degrees were also displayed. I enjoy doing chord melody arrangements for baritone ukulele and find The Ukulele Helper an example of a top notch free chord program. ### 2/5 — Minimal with Real Design & Usability Issues *2017-10-12, version 1.5* App looks and operates as if there was zero thought given to aesthetics and user experience. It does basically what it promises but... Chord selections are made above the chord display so you can’t easily see the before and after switch. Guitar fret changer violates basic app design rules in that swiping the fret display doesn’t slide the display as expected. You have to touch the actual dots. Selections are everywhere crammed together inviting fat-finger mistakes. Where are scales for the stringed instruments? I like the UI and features. One thing I noticed right away: The voicing displayed on the fretboard doesn’t match the voicing played: • Each voicing variant sounds identical. • The played chord is an octave higher than what is shown on the fretboard. ⭐️Adding the ability to hear each chord (and its different voicings) exactly how it’s displayed would go a long way. ⭐️Adding the ability to toggle between displayed numbers and note names would also be awesome (e.g. toggle between displaying “m3rd” vs “Eb” for a Cmin chord). ⭐️Adding functionality to change the color scheme could really benefit some that possess perfect pitch and/or hear notes as colors. ### 5/5 — perfect chord reference app *2023-10-25, version 2.3.1* Super intuitive and convenient to use. So many chord apps are clunky or offer so many options that they’re indecipherable. It’s clean, looks good, and is super helpful for looking up stuff like jazz chords. It’s been great for when I have to look up a chord for the guitar or piano, However, I’m primarily a five string banjoist, and I would be overjoyed to have a five-string banjo added as one of the instruments available. I’ve been trying to get into the more modern/jazzgrass type stuff on the banjo, and having a chord catalogue like this for it would be tremendously helpful. Overall though this is a great tool and learning aid, 5/5 ### 5/5 — Excellent *2021-09-11, version 2.3.1* I have this on my iPad and Mac OS. Excellent way to get a look at different chords in key while figuring out progression and alternate fingerings. The clean and minimalist look make it easy to stay focused and not get distracted.
