Having the samples, mixing suggestions, position on the scale and the reference all in one place/device is excellent. Initially, I had thought that easier printing of samples would have been useful but, after a couple of sessions, I’m not sure this is needed. Updated Version 3 *2025-09-22* Great for those new to colour mixing. Easy to use, colour mixing for oil, acrylic, or watercolours following Munsell system - this new version 3 picks the tube colours, and indicates how much of each colour is required - speeds up the process - and shows where those colour mixes should go. Have lots of fun! ### 5/5 — Terrific mixing tool *2025-04-03* Chroma Magic gives you exactly how to mix a certain color, as on the Munsell color space. You have a nine-value scale, which is what a lot of people mix for their strings. The lowest saturation looks like a 9-value VanDyke brown scale. The highest saturation is whatever is the hue, e.g., cadmium yellow deep; my test showed seven levels of saturation. The color picker shows you within that value/saturation matrix exactly where your color lies. So it’s a great tool to use when you’re not distorting the source colors. ### 5/5 — Absolutely amazing app *2025-02-07* I’ve never left a review of an app before, but I love this app! It’s crazy how awesome I think this is. I’m new to oil painting and struggle with color and values. This app is absolutely a game changer in helping me learn. Some might consider it a crutch, but watch some of the Paul foxton videos on how he uses it and you’ll likely be sold like I am. **Developer response:** So glad you like the app and, yes, Paul Foxton does some great demos on YouTube using it. I wouldn't worry about it becoming a 'crutch'. I (and others) have found that the best thing about it is that it gives you immediate feedback on your color choices and your color perception improves. After a while you'll be able to identify colors more accurately even without the app. ### 5/5 — A valuable tool *2025-01-25* This app was already special enough to get me to pay for it (rare for me). Also whenever I show it to other people, even non-artists are amazed at its capabilities. I think it updated, because now it has even more functionality than it did less than a year ago. I was using this app and another one at the same time to do what this app can do all by itself. It’s a workhorse of an app for me as a painter. Not only does it help me with the color, it helps me find a paint that is close to the color that is selected. I can compare the color but most of all the value. I wish I'd had it 10 years ago! ### 5/5 — Knowing the anatomy of color *2024-07-30* This app is irreplaceable for the true seeing of a color… it’s a tool to help train you to see better. You may see one color and the app will let you know the color is a combination of colors…it’s richer knowledge of that color you’ll get…which in turn will make your painting better. It’s my belief, that having the knowledge is key to then using that information any way you want to. It’s a learning tool. It also gives you the option to see just the values. There’s a lot there I haven’t used yet…lots of exploring to do. The cost is so minimal…there’s no reason not to have this learning tool in your arsenal. Thank you, Michele! Great going! I am using it for Plein Air Painting, to get a good value structure and then to identify colors. I downloaded it immediately, this coupled with the Munsel Big book of color are very important tools for every artist! This is amazing! I am half way through a painting and wanted to verify my values, colors and chroma, all I can say is this is a must have. Easy to use and worth every cent! I love it. Its hard to find really workable Munsell oriented color apps, this one not only has Munsell but 2 other systems as well and integrates with Lightroom well. Plus its very intuitive to use I was up and running full speed on the first try. Some may think its pricy but worth every penny and more for the depth of information you get and how much time it saves me as a painter. So glad you find it useful too (and many thanks for the review). ### 5/5 — Like discovering an artist's secret! *2024-06-12* ChromaMagic is teaching me to "see" colors in a way that is so intuitive and so simple to use. The most important skill for an artist to have to create life-like portrait paintings is to, first, use the correct value and then, the correct color. ChromaMagic guides you to both. For example, brown-coated dogs may look like a warm brown in a highlight but in the shadow, the brown is cooler, a purple brown. ChromaMagic gave me this insight - what a revelation! It took me just minutes to mix the colors based on the information from ChromaMagic. I've struggled with "seeing" the right color as I have learned to paint. With ChromaMagic I don't dread the color mixing step. It has taken that pain point out of my hobby. ChromaMagic works across my Apple devices. Don’t see any other app that does this. In photoshop you can get various color scheme coordinated but not munsell, I find munsell most intuitive for colour mixing. **Developer response:** Wonderful that you find it useful. I originally wrote it for me and I can’t tell you how great it is that it helps other people. No library or storage *2024-07-01* Great idea. But it cannot save your images, like procreate has a gallery. So very very limited. I’m disappointed. ### 3/5 — Magnification *2024-07-25* My introduction to Munsell and this app came recommended by an artist I admire. However - as I can only load it on my phone ( iMac too old) I am frustrated to find that I cannot increase/ enlarge the instructions, which I need to as they are way too small to read as they are….. Please do something about this!! **Developer response:** Very sorry to hear about that. I will definitely make that easier to see in the next version. As the input images aren't modified in any way this feature didn't make the cut in the first version. But the next version will definitely have a way to store and retrieve previous images. Hope you stay with the app in the meantime. Update: Version 2.0 (free update) now has a save option to save your modified images to your photo library. Glad you find it useful in your painting ### 5/5 — Fantastic! *2026-06-29* This is such an impressive app and an incredibly useful tool for artists (like me) who find the Munsell system indispensable for palette choice and color mixing efficiency. Everything about it is so well thought out and beautifully implemented. It's an absolute delight to use. Version 3 was already awesome, but today I updated to version 4 and am blown away by the custom mix tool (and also the bigger image size, which was a VERY welcome improvement). Thank you so much for making my painting life more efficient, more predictable, much less confusing, and more fun! I LOVE this app. 🩷 **Developer response:** More fun!! YES!! I watched Paul Foxton use the app in a YouTube video and was like “I have to have that.” It does not disappoint. Exceptionally helpful for artists. Thank you to the developer for creating such an amazing useful tool. Well worth the money. ### 5/5 — Best app for painters *2026-03-15* I was looking for a good colour picker to check colours when painting, as when with a trained eye it can be hard to really see what’s going on. This is easily the most comprehensive, because it feels designed from the ground up for painters. It helps you understand your image from a values and chroma perspective. I use it all the time to understand and analyse colour and values in images I’m working from. If there was one feature request it would be a min and max values option for the colour picker. But honestly I’m just grateful this app exists at all. **Developer response:** Thanks so much for the review. Nothing even comes close. It completely opened up the Munsell color system to me right away. Once you purchase it you can use on you phone or computer! (And yes you can use it on iPad if you have one). ### 5/5 — Game Changer *2026-02-04* This app has really helped me understand the missing pieces to fully understanding the big three, hue (which is not hard) vale and chroma which are much harder. Honestly amazing! I am still thinking about getting a Munsell book but this app it just really amazing. **Developer response:** Thank you so much. The chroma piece was the game changer for me. It made colors that otherwise didn't fit anywhere in my mental map (beige anyone?) slot into place. Very happy you find it useful. As for the Munsell book. I do have one and it is nice to have the physical chips to use rather than pesky technology. But I find I use them less and less as time goes on.
