## What is CHRTsail?

CHRTsail is the product of real frustration with the boating chart-plotter landscape. Charts are either dumbed down, or old and pixelated — and, either way, hard to actually use. We said enough: it's time someone built modern charts and software for the mariner of today and tomorrow. That's what CHRT is all about.

CHRTsail is a chart plotter engineered like a precision instrument, built from the ground up on a modern stack. Official chart data, full control over how it renders, and a platform built to work just as well offline as online.

BETTER CHARTS
Every chart is vector data, rendered fresh on your device — not scanned paper, not a static image — so it's crisp at any zoom, on any screen. Choose your portrayal: the official IHO S-52 ECDIS symbology, or a softer house style built for easy reading in daylight. Choose your detail level too, from a clean overview down to full harbor complexity. CHRTland adds relief, contours, roads and place names on the land side, so the shore reads as a shape, not a blank space. Charts themselves are official Electronic Navigational Charts, sourced directly from the issuing hydrographic office — today, that's NOAA, covering U.S. waters including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. More coverage is in development.

OFFLINE, BY DESIGN
CHRTsail is built offline-first, not offline-as-backup. Download full chart regions before you leave the dock and keep navigating with no signal at all — built for a multi-day passage, not just a harbor stroll. Hazard alerts keep working offline too, clearly labeled as reading only what's downloaded to your device — never silent, and never pretending to see everything the online check would. The barometric-pressure trend needs no network to begin with, and logs itself alongside your track either way. Running low on charge? Emergency Battery Mode stretches it by slowing how often things refresh — never by turning off anything that matters.

ONE ACCOUNT, EVERYWHERE
The same CHRTsail account carries across iPhone and iPad, CHRTsail for Mac, and CHRTweb in your browser (in beta) — plan a passage at the chart table, then pick it up on the water. Live position and hazard alerts live here, on the device that's actually with you underway.

NATIVE, TOP TO BOTTOM
Live Activity, Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, and Home Screen widgets — built in, not bolted on. Your position, speed, and next waypoint stay visible while you're underway without unlocking your phone; a Home Screen widget surfaces the tide without opening the app at all. Every setting — chart style, complexity, units, safety depth, night mode — follows you everywhere.

WAYPOINTS & ROUTES
Drop a waypoint with a tap, plan a multi-leg route across a whole passage, and navigate to any mark with bearing, distance, time to waypoint, and cross-track error. Share a route with your crew — sent directly to people you've connected with, never a public link.

WEATHER, TIDES & CURRENTS
NOAA harmonic tide and current predictions, computed right on your device — a scrubbable curve, station markers on the chart, and the next high or low wherever you're looking. Observed conditions from the buoys that are actually measuring nearby — wind, waves, pressure — with the station named and the reading's age always in view. Full National Weather Service marine zone forecasts and active warnings, read straight from the source, not trimmed to a headline.

AND EVERYTHING ELSE A PASSAGE NEEDS
Hazard alerts ranked against your own declared safety depth — arithmetic, not a guess, and never a verdict. A logbook that records itself, passage after passage. Anchor watch, Man Overboard, and a boat profile that knows your draft.

CHRTsail provides situational awareness only. It is not SOLAS-compliant, not a certified ECDIS, and not intended for primary navigation — and it is not a substitute for official charts, publications, or prudent seamanship.

### 5/5 — Beautiful charts, clear and easy

*2026-09-08*

Hands down the prettiest, clearest charts I’ve seen. I’m a novice and started learning navigation on navionics, but CHRT totally blows them away. 🐳 You can reduce clutter on the charts and have it display super simply or expose everything you’d see on a paper chart. Since I’m learning, being able to tap everything on the charts and get more info has been extremely helpful. And still, by far, the WIDGETS are my favorite. They are so lovely. 😍😍

### 5/5 — Finally, usable vector charts

*2026-09-04*

This app has solved the issue of defunct raster charts and poorly adapted vector charts. CHRT displays the things you need to see, is easily readable, and is highly adjustable in level of detail. Once you experience the lock screen widget, you’ll wonder how you ever went without it.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.1.3 — 2026-09-26

Some quick changes to production getting ready for launch:
• Creating an account is easier. The first screen asks whether you already have one, explains what signing up commits you to before you start, and lets you see the password you're typing. The sign-up buttons now say sign up.
• You can delete your account from within the app, no need to go to the web account page. It asks you to type DELETE so it can't happen by accident.
• If you hid your email when signing in with Apple, the app now shows that it's a private relay address and explains that Apple forwards mail to you. It asks what to call you, shows your name — or My Account — in place of the relay address, and lets you set a different address for receipts and notices.
• The 24-hour preview counts down in hours on the chart, and about an hour before it ends the app sends one reminder.
• A planned line can now start from water the chart shows as deep enough. Depth at a point is read from the most detailed chart that covers it, so a coarser survey no longer blocks a start inside a harbour. When a start or end is still refused, the app shows which depth area it found and how far away it was.
• On the account-created screen, the option to start again with a different email is now clearly tappable.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-09-24

Well we're fixing a bunch in this one.
- Sub-region bundles available for offline: download only what you need, in smaller chunks to save memory on device.
- Upgraded subregion and offline download manager: V1 of download manager. Lots of functionality. We'll see what sticks.
- Improved Route UI improvements: fixing smoothness of the route drawer. Additional buttons to press to do the logical things.
- Improved Navigate UI improvements: fixed some obvious interactions around stopping navigating from the expanded side tab.
- Improved Apple Sign In with Private Relay email experience: there was confusion on what was happening with an email address was showing as the private relay email instead. CHRTsail is now more deeply integrated with Apple Sign In and emails should be editable to add along-side the private relay email address.
- Some hidden secret features that we'll be publicly releasing in due time.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-09-17

New from the chart table:

• Offline chart downloads now continue in the background on Wi-Fi. Downloads and updates keep going with the phone locked, in another app, or after iOS closes CHRTsail. Force-quitting stops one. Off Wi-Fi it waits, unless you started it on cellular.
• Choose offline charts on a map of what CHRT publishes. ALL NOAA COVERAGE and INLAND (USACE) are the options today, and the screen says CHRT lists no smaller areas yet. QUEUE OVERNIGHT leaves a download for the overnight run.
• The bar about cells not identified by CHRT is gone from the chart. The issuing office, the not-for-navigation line and the chart's dates in the settings drawer all stay where they were.
• CHRT's warning that a chart build is stale now shows only in the settings drawer. It used to appear on the chart with the cells bar. It is still shown, in the warning colour, in the drawer's footer.
• "Not identified by CHRT" now means CHRT said it does not have that cell. A rate limit, a timeout or no signal used to count too. Those cells now read STILL READING, and the app asks again.
• Turning sync on at first launch now includes waypoints and routes. The offer names settings, waypoints and routes, and records a consent for each. Tracklines are not included. Declining turns none of them on.
• A shared logbook entry can carry the routes and marks you followed. Shared as THE ENTRY AND THE TRACK, it includes what you were navigating to while it recorded. This applies only to entries shared from this version on.
• The subscription screen now matches the rest of CHRTsail, in day and red night mode, and says what CHRTsail is.
• A failed checkout can be tried again from the same screen. The price and card note stay on screen.
• A passage's routes and marks still arrive after you resolve a sync conflict between devices.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-05

Share a logbook entry with crew
You can now send one logbook entry to a crew member who was aboard. They have to accept the offer, and what lands is a read-only copy they cannot edit.
You choose whether the recorded track goes with it. The entry on its own sends the title, dates, distance, time under way, speeds and the boat's name. Adding the track sends every position the boat held, including where you started and finished.

Tagging someone as crew still shows them nothing. Sharing is a separate, deliberate act — and your captain's, weather and general notes are never sent at either setting, because they often name other crew.

Also in this release:
• See which devices are signed in to your account. PROFILE now lists them and can remove one. A removed device signs out the next time it connects, and nothing on it is deleted.
• A sign-in problem now explains itself in plain words, instead of showing the account server's own error text.
• Marinas now carry the same badge the chart uses on the web.
• The app no longer calls your iPad a phone — including the copy about what stays on your device.

CHRTsail shows you charts for situational awareness. It is not a certified electronic chart system and is not SOLAS-compliant.
