## What is Circa Looper?

IMPORTANT: Circa is an AUv3 plugin. It requires an AUv3 host such as AUM (recommended), Garageband, Logic, or Cubase. It will not run on its own.

Circa is a six-layer stereo looping instrument for iPad, built for players and producers who want a looper that does more than loop. Each layer is independent, fully modulatable, and deeply controllable, with a touch-first interface designed for live performance and studio exploration alike.Inspired by modern loopers like the BOSS RC-505 and MLRE on the Monome Norns, Circa pairs the playability of a hardware looper with the routing and modulation of a serious production tool. Capture a spontaneous take, carve it up with slices, pitch it, scrub it, route it through built-in effects, and let gesture recorders play your UI back like a second instrument.

SIX LAYERS
Six independent stereo loop layers, each with its own transport, sync mode, trigger mode, filter, and effect sends. Layers can sync to the host, sync to a master loop, or run free. Triggers can fire on sync, on audio input, or freely. Record from the stereo input or self-record through an internal buss for feedback loops and generative behavior.

TOUCH-FIRST PERFORMANCE
Dedicated pages for Speeds and Positions let you perform loops with your hands. The position strip can be divided into slices for chopped playback. Speed, position, filter, and sends are all continuous and playable. Damper, scrub, and slice controls are built for tactile manipulation, not mouse input.

GESTURE RECORDERS
Six UI loopers that record and play back your actual control movements. Almost every parameter in Circa can be captured as a gesture, then looped or played as a one-shot. Trim silence from the front, toggle loop mode, or fire gestures from MIDI. Build evolving performances without touching the interface twice.

MODULATION
Deep modulation across the plugin. Continuous targets include layer delay and reverb sends, output levels, A/B selectors, play position, and more. Momentary targets cover mute, solo, and toggle states. Assign multiple modulators to any target and build performances that develop on their own.

FULL MIDI CONTROL
A complete MIDI controller system with continuous, momentary, and hold assignments. Use any controller to drive most of Circa's functions. MIDI modulation assignments light up briefly when triggered, so you can see your rig working at a glance.

BUILT-IN EFFECTS
Studio-grade reverb, delay, parametric EQ, and compressor drawn from Audio Damage's effect library. Send any layer to reverb and delay independently, then route through the stereo bus EQ and compressor on the way out.

SEVEN OUTPUTS
Six assignable stereo outputs plus a dedicated cue output. Send any layer to any output. Solo, record, and edit through the cue bus without the audience hearing.

CROSS-PLATFORM PRESETS
Circa's user presets are XML-based and cross-platform. A preset made on iOS opens on macOS, Windows, or Linux, and vice versa. Sessions built in GarageBand or Logic on iOS open on desktop if you have a license to the desktop version.

### 2/5 — This would be pretty cool…

*2026-03-18*

If it weren’t for the fact that they didn’t optimize the interface for iPad screen. Granted, I am using an iPad mini. But, it’s my favorite iPad. And I paid money for this app. Therefore, it should be properly supported. It seems like they just took the desktop version as-is and released it on iPad with no further effort to actually make it usable. Text, is tiny. Part of the interface is cut off depending on how I resize it in AUM. It’s just a terrible experience for something that has so much potential to be awesome.

### 5/5 — Crashing

*2026-02-17*

Much more stable now thank you. Amazing and creative app. Updated to 5*. Original review: I love audio damage but this keeps crashing. Don’t know why but I hope it’s remedied soon! I will gladly change my review once fixed or a solution is provided.

**Developer response:** This was addressed with v1.0.21, and improved for v1.1. Could you please try again and edit your review as you said?

### 2/5 — I don’t like it

*2025-06-07, version 1.0.17*

Circa Looper lacks quantized loop lengths and fade in out. Recording start and stop is manual, making it better for ambient drones than for precise looping.

### 5/5 — Nice creative looper

*2025-05-28*

Fast work flow very easy to record a song or massive soundscapes all sorts of possibilities and nice effect included as well.

### 2/5 — Crashing

### 2/5 — good idea, poorly realised

*2025-05-12, version 1.0*

Crashes in AUM on iOS 18.4.1, iPad Pro M4. Some of the menus are much too small, the „scratching“ sounds just unmusical and artificial. Would be much better to have controllable fade-ins like the sectors in Enso work. Until now Circa seems to be really buggy …

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.1.7 — 2026-04-23

What's New (v1.1.7)
Host sync improvement: synced layers always return to zero when the host resumes playback from a bar line, including 1:1:1.

New modulation targets. Momentary: mute and solo on, off, and toggle. Continuous: layer delay and reverb send levels and A/B selectors, delay and reverb output levels and A/B selectors.

Fixed: Stop commands were ignored if a Play command was pending.

Fixed: Reverb color and diffusion quantized too coarsely.

Fixed: Crossfader bled through from the A buss when set to full B.

Fixed: Click at the beginning of playback when Env To Speed is engaged.

Improved popup menu handling for the expanded modulation target list.

MIDI: control-up events are now ignored when a control-hold mapping is active.

The gesture-trim button now plays the gesture during recording or playback, instead of stopping it.

### 1.1.5 — 2025-08-19

>> Scrubbing while stopped has been fixed.

>> Scrubbing lag when damper is at zero fixed.

>> Reduced clicking while selecting slices.

>> Several issues with host sync resolved.

### 1.1.1 — 2025-07-02

>> Fixed a crash that happens when using Gesture Recorders with the Slices knob.

### 1.1 — 2025-07-02

>> Gesture Recorders added to the Modulations page. These are a group of six loopers that, instead of audio, will loop the UI itself. Almost every control in Circa can be recorded and played back, either as a loop or a 1-shot. The transport works just like the audio transports (double click stop to RTZ, hold stop to clear). The loop toggle button allows you to switch between 1-shot playback and looping playback, and the scissors button trims any dead air at the front of the recording (useful when mousing or recording controls not on the top panel.) To prevent feedback loops, the gesture recorders can not record MIDI input; they only record actual UI manipulation. You can, however, play the gesture recorders with MIDI input, via two new controls in the momentary assign lists.

>> Play position is now a continuous modulation target. This is, as you may imagine, somewhat experimental. GLHF

>> Playback volume is is now ducked while scrubbing position. It was felt by several users that the scrubbing was too loud; we have addressed this.

>> Slices were not displaying in the UI when editor was re-opened. This has been fixed.

>> Several bugs related to waveform start and end point manipulation have been sent to live on a farm in the country.

>> Various other bug fixes and optimizations.

### 1.0.21 — 2025-06-15

>> Memory manager rewrite. The plugin now dynamically allocates memory rather than carving out a big chunk on instance. The net result is that lower end machines (principally older iPads) should now work fine, and all the memory-related crashes should be solved. When you are running out of RAM, there are two stages. First, the plug-in’s UI will inform you that undo is no longer available, and if you continue to record, it will eventually stop being able to record, as it has allocated all system RAM it is allowed to. The plugin will continue to work as normal and the session should be otherwise unaffected.

>> MIDI modulation assignments now briefly light up when they are triggered.

>> Size of "handle" on loop start and end positions is larger, making them easier to grab on touch screens.

>> The selected layer number is brighter on Speeds and Positions screens.

>> Bug where Audio and Free trigger methods did not work correctly when host sync was on has been fixed.

>> Master RTZ mode issues have been fixed.

>> Trigger mode can not be changed while recording.

>> Start and end positions were getting reset on preset load. This has been fixed.

>> On MIDI CC assignments, hold and down now trigger when the CC value is greater than 63, instead of 127.
