### 2/5 — Signed up but…

*2025-10-27, version 2.3*

Then I found it was a subscription model. Happy to pay but not subscription. The bigger downside is all your data is stored in the cloud; your data is not synced on your local device. So the app is just a pseudo app, just a front end to their website. You may as well use your iPhone browser to access. Big issue for me.

### 4/5 — Great app that makes papers easier

*2022-05-28*

The app is really helpful for managing references and writing papers. It would be nice if it was more stable and could copy and paste without formatting issues into word.

### 2/5 — Fantastic app- but now you have to pay for it

*2021-11-07, version 2.1.1*

This was really a very good app, it let you change your referencing style, put everything in alphabetical order, got some information for you, etc, but now you have to pay an unreasonable amount to use it. Really disappointed, surely there would be some other way to make money off of this app?

### 2/5 — Another subscription? No thank you.

*2021-08-22*

I would happily pay a few bucks for this app. 5 bucks up front would be more than worth it, because it creates a page that I can easily just copy and past, as opposed to most citation apps, where you cite one at a time. I’m not willing to pay a very steep 4 bucks a month for the rest of my time in college for this convenience.

Honestly, I genuinely miss when you could just pay for software rather than subscribe to it. Ridiculous.

### 5/5 — Organized and user friendly

*2020-10-29*

I’ve been using the app (on my phone and my iPad) since I started grad school, and it has helped me a lot. Very user friendly! What I like the most about Citationsy is that you can separate the references in different folders, depending on the project or paper you are working on. Also, with the free version, you can copy/paste all the citations to your document.

### 5/5 — Pretty straight forward and gets the job done

*2020-06-29*

I love this app, I’ve been with them since I was in college. I stayed loyal after the developer sent me an email personally and helped me with my issues then. I haven’t changed since, and every time I need a citation I always comeback to here, and now it’s on an app! Thanks again!

I love this app cuz like I said in the title it’s p straight forward and gets the job done for me, and when I’m done citing, I just copy paste everything into my word document! I can’t really complain about this, and it’s free! 😄

I do wish in the future there were an extension for word so I could access all of my stuff from my account right inside of word! *fingers crossed*

### 5/5 — You've broken it!

*2020-01-11, version 1.4*

Guys, the 'in-text' copy link, that used to be a pen, that you could use to generate an in text reference isn't working on desktop OR mobile. This is a huge bummer. What have you done?!?

### 4/5 — Perfect but limited

*2020-01-06, version 1.3*

This is a great app. Really, it’s brilliant. I used to use RefMe and since it was merged into CiteThisForMe it hasn’t been as good. Citationsy is the perfect replacement.

However, I’m in the middle of an important critical review where I need a bibliography of 25-30 papers. Citationsy will not let me add any more than 13 papers to my bibliography and just stops working. I can’t find anything to say that I need to pay for pro to have more references, so I’m now stuck using two separate projects. Stupid and time consuming.

### 5/5 — It works!

*2019-09-29, version 1.3*

I've tested it out and it does everything I want. Search books from the web, enter website url, scan barcode from books. I like the way that you can make folders to organise your references for projects. Lots of export options too (including cut and paste) and it has the Harvard referencing style which I am required to use for my textile degree. Great!

### 1/5 — Not great

*2019-07-08*

It’s difficult to use.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear that, Snapzzz702. Don’t hesitate to contact support@citationsy.com if you’d like a refund.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Sign in issues

*2026-03-14, version 2.3*

I simply couldn’t sign up or sign in to the app on my MacBook, as after using Google or Apple ID to sign up nothing would happen and I would stay on the same page

### 1/5 — Not Workingv

*2026-01-15*

App fails to load

### 1/5 — Not working on 2017 ipad pro

*2024-06-11, version 2.3*

After clicking on sign up or login with email it just shows a blank page and doesn’t let me go back

### 1/5 — Rubbish

*2023-06-03, version 2.3*

I’ve used the for my MSc dissertation, I’ve just exported the references to find loads of details wrong/missing and had to spend 12+ hours fixing them.

Thankfully I was a few days ahead and had time, but it’s meant I’ve lost 2 days of my holiday ☹️

### 1/5 — It doesn’t work

*2022-03-01, version 2.1.1*

Too good to be true.
Once open and try to use any of its features collapses or closes unexpectedly.
I trie a few times to scan and upload a few books but all attempts failed, suddenly stop working or screen just go white and collapsed.
I was really exited about this but it really sucks, so don’t waste your time.

### 1/5 — Scanner doesn’t work

*2021-11-25, version 2.1.1*

When scanning a UK barcode of a novel in English, the iPhone app returned a selection of translated works in German

### 1/5 — Era buena pero la hicieron de paga

*2021-10-06, version 2.1.1*

No vale la pena pagar por la aplicación

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work since the update, developer unresponsive

*2021-09-22, version 2.0*

I have a fully paid up subscription of the previous version, but since updating to 2.0 it does work. The touch screen doesn’t work on my iPad, and on my phone I can open the bibliographies but it won’t save new citations. I emailed the developer 4 days ago and I have had no response. I am a student with deadlines and I need to get this resolved.

### 1/5 — Ahora cobran

*2021-09-20, version 2.0*

Estaba buena hasta que la hicieron de paga 👎
Desinstalada
Le hubieran puesto anuncios pero que siguiera gratis

### 1/5 — Same problems

*2019-12-01*

A lot of the information that you get from the ISBN number is incomplete. For example, if the title has a colon (:) I’ve had to enter the rest of the title manually every time. If there is more than one author, I have to enter the other authors manually each time. Often, when there is an editor for a book, I have to take them out of the author field and put them into the editor field. Finally, there of been a number of occasions where does failed to include the publisher.

I have now entered about 350 books over the last 2 years, and these problems have been consistent the entire time – – even with the most recent updates.

Finally, I’ve never been able to get your system to recognize the ISBN numbers of magazines or journals.

This is the second review that I have written, my first being about 2 years ago, and the issues I have mentioned here I mentioned back then. I have even been in contact with the developer several times, and these issues remain.

**Developer response:** Sorry that the app is not working out for you. The latest updates fixes some of the bugs you’ve mentioned, so I encourage you to give it a try.
Citationsy will never be able to scan magazines and journals.

### 5/5 — Exactly what I need

*2024-10-04, version 2.3*

I have been using this since 2019 all the way through my degree and current masters. I continued to use it as it is a quick process to accumulate all my references in one place for each project that I am doing. I like the little features, like being able to change the background colours, this is a huge help as I am able to find my projects at a glance on the home page. And the home page is great too as all of my projects reference lists stay there until I delete them. It stores all my references, sometimes hundreds at ease. All in alphabetical order, when I need them in my document all I do is copy+paste! I think the choice of reference style is great too as it can be tailored to suit, I usually use Harvard. Adding references is a really easy process too, choose the type of reference ie:book, article, website the list is vast. I like that I can also add details of sources manually. I can honestly say that I have never had an issue with my references not being found, everything I have searched for has been found and added to my references list. I cannot recommend this app enough, it’s made my whole academic education essay writing so much simpler.

### 5/5 — Best in class citation manager

*2022-10-14*

This is simply the best citation manager out there, and the most appropriate tool for most academic and student writing, especially in the humanities.

I’ve been using the web and Mac-based versions for years now and was pleasantly surprised to discover it has an iPhone app and that it’s so well and elegantly designed.

This is the tool that gets the various referencing formats, but also allows for the art of referencing.

The main reason I only have it at four stars for the iOS app is that it appears the export functions could be more communicative— it not always clear where the expected data will end up. (Clipboard, Word app, etc. ). Also, it seems that the copy function does not preserve formatting, namely italics / underlining, which actually would be a pretty substantial time-saver if it did.

### 5/5 — Great app for keeping all your references in one place

*2022-09-03, version 2.2*

### 5/5 — Perfection

*2021-09-09, version 2.0*

The worst thing about writing essays for university are the citations but this app makes them simple, easy and fast. Thank you for saving me so many hours of work!
