## What is Citizenship?

Citizenship reads where a file comes from.

Photos, videos, and documents can carry proof of their own origin: cryptographic Content Credentials (C2PA) embedded by cameras and AI tools, the plaintext AI labels required by China's GB 45438 standard, IPTC and XMP metadata, and openly readable watermarks. Citizenship reads all of it on your device and tells you plainly what it found.

EVIDENCE, NOT A SCORE

Every finding is labelled with the layer it came from, and the layers are ordered by how much they can actually prove:

◈ Signed — cryptographic provenance. Verifiable and tamper-evident.
◇ Declared — plaintext declarations. Trustworthy in origin, but forgeable and removable.
≈ Watermark — openly readable watermarks. Absence proves nothing.
○ Context — file-shape clues that explain why evidence is missing.

There is no percentage anywhere in the app. A number invites a screenshot used as proof, and no honest number exists for this question.

WHAT IT CHECKS

• Images — C2PA manifests with signature verification, GB 45438 AIGC labels, IPTC/XMP source types, generator metadata, Adobe TrustMark watermarks, visible AI labels, screenshot clues
• Video — C2PA whole-file validation, AIGC labels, container metadata
• Audio — C2PA, ID3 and RIFF structural scans, Meta AudioSeal watermarks
• Documents — PDF, Word, and EPUB: embedded credentials and AIGC labels
• Text — declared notices only

CHECK IT WHERE YOU SAW IT

Most files never reach your photo library. Tap Share in Photos, Safari, a chat app, or Files and choose Citizenship — the result appears in place. You can also paste from the clipboard, or pick a file inside the app.

EVERYTHING STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE

Citizenship makes no network requests at all. Nothing you check is uploaded, because there is nowhere for it to go. No account, no analytics, no advertising, no server. History is stored only on your device and can be switched off, which deletes what was saved.

WHAT IT WILL NOT DO

• It will not tell you a file is AI-generated when the file carries no evidence. "No AI indicators found" is not proof of authenticity — most sharing, re-saving, and screenshotting strips provenance away, so an empty result is the common outcome for genuine and AI-generated files alike.
• It will not guess whether text was written by AI. Statistical detectors are unreliable and systematically misflag people writing in a second language, so that is permanently excluded.
• It will not describe a person. A result describes a file, and never who made it or whether anyone acted dishonestly.
• It will not claim a file was cropped. When an image is too small to check meaningfully, it says exactly that.

A signature proves who signed a file and that it has not changed since — not that what it depicts is real. A camera signature cannot prove what the camera was pointed at. Citizenship is a reading tool, not a verdict machine: where a matter is consequential, get the original file from its source.

### 5/5 — Very clear app

*2026-09-02*

Thoughtful and easy to use. I shared a photo and got a clear result with the evidence behind it. It never pretends that “no AI indicators found” means the image is authentic. Fast, private, and genuinely useful.
