Civil War: 1861 covers the opening battles of the American Civil War. The game covers both the small and large actions of that momentous year, starting with the battle at 'Big Bethel', on to the comparatively vast engagements at 'Bull Run' and 'Wilson's Creek'. In 1861 both sides have plenty of volunteer recruits who, though enthusiastic, lack battlefield experience. On the weaponry side much of the equipment still belongs to the Napoleonic Era with a plethora of muzzle loading, smoothbore artillery. Many of the commanders, who most would identify as the leaders the civil war armies, are still junior officers in the engagements recreated in this game. Control of units is very clunky. Placement of units at the start of a battle heavily favors union because the outnumbered confederates have to use movement and terrain to their advantage and cannot get enough units into position to offer a modest resistance or even obtain any tactical advantage. You cannot change formations and move during a turn which is dumb. Cannons are too fragile even when they are on high ground and in fortifications. One attack by infantry takes them out regardless. It’s frustrating. ### 4/5 — Good game *2021-12-12* Although there’s only 12 missions total, the gameplay and difficulty is more even-handed than some of Hex games’ other titles. Personally I prefer having more content to sift through, but this is a fun time-killer if you don’t feel like having to play their 8-mission campaigns. ### 4/5 — Good Game but some glitches. *2019-11-27* The game is very good and would highly recommend. The glitches include the Confederate flag bugging out, and completing the bonus level crashes the game. ### 1/5 — New update a disappointment *2018-12-13* New update might work for iPhone but it is a serious downgrade on the iPad. Very small font and units, map is not centered and cannot be zoomed out like before which was better, buggy - does not recognize targets after movement nor show formation change button after moving. ### 1/5 — IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN *2017-07-22* This is a really annoying game. No matter what you do, you can't win. Save yourself the aggravation (and $$). To access it I am forced into going back through the App Store.
