### 2/5 — Good Game Play, BUT…

*2025-04-16*

Had this game for a couple of years, and enjoyed playing it on my iPad. After several months, and a new iPad Pro 11 in, and iPadOS 18.4, I came back to the game.

Frustration! After some time, and a scenario or two, I will touch a union infantry unit to select it and the game automatically shifts to the unit description page and locks up. No way off that screen and back to the game. Quit and relaunch, game deletion and a new download, nothing fixes this problem.

Will delete if I can’t find a fix.

If you use similar hardware, I recommend skipping this game.

### 3/5 — Peninsular War All Over Again

*2021-12-31*

I’ll be honest, I gave up on continuing the final campaign, and the reason for it being the rather unreasonable conditions of some of the mission objectives. Sure, they may seem reasonable at first, but then you blindsided by enemy troops that spawn in right next to the objectives you’ve just captured, thereby losing you the mission because you weren’t given any warning until it was too late. But it isn’t just the last campaign that is rife with unreasonably difficult missions; in just about every campaign past the ones you get in the base game, there’s at least one or two missions that cannot be done feasibly on normal difficulty without having to take several hours in between attempts trying to process what you need to do. Manassas station is among the worst offender in this aspect, as I refuse to play that mission anymore after finally completing it, simply because of how borderline unwinnable it is for the CSA.

I’ll give it this much, the game is bearable compared to Peninsular War, but shoving in missions that aren’t even remotely balanced isn’t going to make the game fun, it’s just going to turn away customers. I personally wouldn’t recommend this game, but you can try it at your own risk. Stick to 1863 or 1864.

Side note: Really disappointed that Antietam wasn’t covered; that’s like, one of the most important battles of THAT year…

### 2/5 — Very one sided

*2021-08-01*

All battles are pre determined no matter the strategy used by confederates. The Union out number and and are given twice or more the strength of of the confederates.

### 2/5 — Good

*2020-02-02*

Great game just a lot of money if you wanna play the game. After the first couple levels you gotta pay for the rest after buying the game to begin with

### 2/5 — Civil war 1862 update

*2018-12-26*

Previously purchased scenarios will not restore in this update

### 2/5 — Limited game play

*2018-09-08*

I really enjoy both 1861 and 1862 , but you purchase them and only get a few extra battles . I spend $15+ tax to add levels on a game I already purchased after testing the lite version. I beat few wars and had to pay again for more wars scenarios in the game I already paid for . Love the game play and set-up but I am not going to blow my credit card to keep purchasing new war scenarios.

### 4/5 — Très bon wargame tour par tour

*2018-09-08*

J’ai bien apprécié la simplicité de prise en main tout en gardant l’intérêt du jeu et la note historique.

### 4/5 — Needs a reset

*2018-08-03*

Love playing these games I have all of them 62-65. Only problem I have is that there is no way to reset your progress to zero. It's kinda nice that you can go back and play any level you want. But If you want to replay the game from the start you still have all your progress saved. Makes it hard to keep up with where you are on the play through. Even if you delete the app and reinstall it still keeps your progress. If there is a way to delete the progress I can't find it!! Very annoying but then I keep playing, so...

### 4/5 — Bilingue

*2018-02-27*

Dommage qu’il n’y ait pas une version française.

### 3/5 — Fun little wargame.

*2017-06-26*

Nothing particularly extraordinary here. Your basic 20th century hex-based tactical US civil war game with an adequate AI for what is required of it. Kinda flavorless, in terms of sound effects, special rules and music, and it could have used a good UI pass. But still enjoyable. It's fun to charge the enemy's guns and to drive his army before you. I consider my 2 bucks well spent. If you like the free version, buy it.

### 3/5 — Not bad - could be better if...

*2017-02-06*

1. In campaign mode, you could progress to the next battle even if you lose the current one. It would be cool to see more realistic campaign results based on battles won AND lost. Having to win every battle is pretty artificial.

2. Movement is unnecessarily cumbersome, as units cannot move through each other. This gums up the battlefield as well as game play, and is not particularly realistic.

3. Would love to see a strategic map for a campaign overview.

### 2/5 — Stuck

*2017-02-04, version 2.6*

The game won't advance past the "Collection" mission on "Shot and Shell" campaign.

### 2/5 — Game won't move on

*2016-12-30*

I enjoy the game but for some reason it is stuck on "shot and shell" level 5 (collection). I have completed all the objectives several times but it will not let me move on. It says hold the control point till turn 11 and destroy enemy wagon which I have done but that is it. I have hit the refresh button till turn 50 and still it won't let me win or continue to next level.

### 3/5 — Unreliable game saving

*2016-11-25*

I was enjoying this game until I got past half way through the first campaign, then for no apparent reason all my progress was lost, leaving me to start all over again, which I don't feel inclined to do.

### 4/5 — Very good game!

*2016-02-21, version 2.5*

I play these type of games all the time. I like the strategy of defending your position and knowing when and way to attack. I'm very interested in the civil war. Learning about the battles and their outcome.

### 4/5 — Good Game

*2015-04-18, version 1.8*

Upper levels are way to hard.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Gold version

*2024-11-22*

I purchased the gold version of this app as well as the gold version of a few other apps. Those version came with all of the campaigns. Those versions have been removed and replaced by these simpler versions which require that you purchase all of the campaigns. So, if I need to download the gold version again, it is gone and i would have to purchase all of the campaigns again. After this experience I will no longer purchase from this vendor.

### 1/5 — Pay for a pay wall

*2020-07-09*

Literally 80% of this game is behind another pay wall after u pay the initial $3
I’m not kidding dude when u pay for the game you only get 20% of the whole game don’t buy it’s a basic game anyway and sit shows the developers are greedy

### 1/5 — Fix Civil War 1864 Gold, it will not open!

*2020-06-03*

I have all of the civil war games that haunted cow and hexwar has to offer. Love that you guys are updating the games, but this one has some bugs that irritates me. When I am trying to find a battle as the confederacy, after looking at only two battles they all change to the union side. I paid $1.99 for 8 more battles that are full of bugs and some of the battles have the same map as older battles. So you don’t get 8 new battles, So fix bugs please! I love these games but now I don’t want anymore! The last update for 1864 made it crash as soon as it is opened, please fix

### 1/5 — Needs easier easy mode

*2019-09-13*

After losing virtually every game, I found it is just an exercise in frustration. The AI has massive advantage in that it doesn't need to follow organization rules.

They should have provided an easier level that would make the game pleasurable for new learners. Every so often I return to the hoping I'd find a way for success, but instead have 60-80% of my forces easily destroyed

Why the programers would think gamers like to play losing games is beyond me

### 1/5 — Why

*2018-12-27*

No longer have all scenarios? What a rip off...why.

### 1/5 — Save your money

*2017-06-20, version 2.6*

Game can be fun but some of its battle algorithms are junk. How is it that an army of fresh reinforcements all "miss" a weak enemy target? Yeah I want it to be challenging but not ridiculously stupid. Definitely not wasting any more money on this.

### 1/5 — Crap

*2016-07-22, version 2.5*

This game is not only crap it's misleading and if you buy this you gave your money for crap crap crap. This is thievery plain and simple

### 1/5 — Nickel and dimed

*2015-01-28, version 1.8*

You spend five bucks on the app, get two campaigns per side then have to pay two dollars A PIECE for the other 4 campaigns? What a bloody rip off. I'm so tired of paying for DLC.

### 1/5 — Teuer und es funktioniert nicht

*2014-10-08*

*2014-08-30, version 1.6*

Not enough missions and buggy when I play the confederate side. It won't let me "resume game". I always have to start over with the first mission.

A disappointment since I own all the ww2 tank games and really like them.

So awful I deleted it even though I payed for the full version.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Superb turn-based strategy game!

*2015-07-14, version 2.0*

Superb turn-based strategy game!

### 5/5 — God Bless 'Hex War' Games !!!

*2015-06-03, version 1.9*

I own ALL 24 games (+ Add-ons) 'HexWar' is a MUST HAVE series, for history buffs & war nutz alike...

The Civil War series starts off slow, but improves greatly w/ each release. "Gettysburg" is the best of the series ...BY FAR!!!

P.S. Worth every $, but the add-on missions could cost half that...

### 5/5 — Rebel Yell

*2015-05-20*

Great game.I'm a big fan of 'battle' games.Long drawn out campaigns (Total War) are not for me.Simple, fun combat action.

### 5/5 — Immersive little war game

*2015-03-22, version 1.8*

Simple yet brilliant. Men and arms, movement, zones of control and battle odds. Infantry, cannons, cavalry in coordination amid terrain advantages and disadvantages. Tricky AI at higher levels and lots of battle scenarios. Good graphics. Good map views. Ok SFX. Charge!!! Highly recommend.

### 5/5 — Fantastic game

*2015-03-19*

If you liked the first ACW game from Hunted Cow you will love this. The graphics are brilliant and it's got handy in game combat stats that you can turn on to start and off once you are into the swing. I have not tried the new devise swapping but it will be handy to take up a game started on the iPad to play on the bus on the iPhone what a good idea.

### 5/5 — Palidor

*2015-02-15, version 1.8*

Awesome game
