That excitement faded fast as I discovered that "Gettysburg" had none of the fast pace energy of its Napoleonic cousin. Half way through the campaign I actually found myself not caring who won anymore. These types of games can only take so much "realism" before the essence of what makes them fun is gone. I truly hope this is not the future trend for a company that has made many enjoyable games. ### 1/5 — Failed *2015-01-25* This could be a good Gettysburg game but the designer has set up historical "objectives" that must be achieved or the game quits. This prevents trying different strategies to win the battle. The game is more like watching a reenactment rather than playing a game. If you don't follow the historical script, you are punished by the game ending early. Victory conditions are fine but they should not cause the game to end. This is a design flaw that makes this game a failure and I regret buying it. ### 1/5 — Too buggy to play *2015-01-23* This game stalls all the time and runs very very slowly. I have enjoyed playing other games by this company but this was a waste of money ### 2/5 — Good, but.... *2015-01-17* The game has a chance to be very good or excellent, but at least one of the games is virtually unwinnable. Day one as the Confederates you have 12 turns to capture all four points, however you can barely even move the units to Seminary in 12 turns, much less have a battle. Once the bugs are fixed, it should be good. ### 1/5 — Unplayable *2015-01-14, version 1.1* This game is completely unplayable. Either playing a battle or the tutorial it very quickly hangs and becomes unresponsive. It's very buggy and yes, the never ending night is really ridiculous. I'm past turn 25 on the campaign game and it's showed as night from 6am to 6pm. This one has potential but only if some serious work is done on bug fixes. UPDATED - from bad to worse - HC's fix has totally ruined this app. Frankly I wonder that any reputable company could release a patch that would scuttle the whole app. Where's the quality control? How could Apple have let this worthless drek get on line? Where's my ten bucks?UPDATED - where's the emergency past announced nearly a week ago? Not something I expected after coughing up $10... ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Only one side is ever allowed to win *2025-12-29* If you choose the confederate side and use tactics beating the union the game will stop allowing your cannos and shots to do any damage. It doesn’t matter if you have wiped out 60 percent of union and its generals you still lose. In my last game my score was 6040 no generals lost to the Unions 2600 with 2 generals lost and both targets captured before turn 9 but the still Union won. DEMS must be running the site lol ### 1/5 — Only one side is ever allowed to win *2024-06-30* If you choose the confederate side and use tactics beating the union the game will stop allowing your men to move or attack the union. And if you start wiping out the union the game will be stopped and union will be declared to have defeated you. Great idea for a game if it was fair, doesn’t matter if wiped out almost all of the union and it’s generals you still lose, lol. ### 1/5 — First Game of this Civil War series to earn a “ F” *2021-08-17* Unlike other games in this series, this game continually freezes. Won’t allow a restart unless I reboot my iPad ( OS ver. 14.7.1). Deleted and reinstalled from the App Store, still locks up. Did the designers ever test it. After downloading, game would freeze up midway. Thought there was great news with an update, but that only froze the game up from the beginning. Save your money until this becomes fixed. It shouldn't even be listed for sale in the App Store. 3 months later one fix and still game freezes up in the middle of day two. Enough is enough I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!!! ### 1/5 — Do not waste your money *2015-02-07, version 1.2* I generally like Hunted Cows games. Rebels and Redcoats is awesome. This, however, is an unmitigated disaster and I really want a refund. The gameplay is atrocious!! Way to screw the pooch Hunted Cow. You've managed to come up with a great idea and then ruined it. ### 1/5 — Cannot Win in Some Scenarios *2015-01-27* Union full battle cannot be won, and so the game quite part-way through. It claims you have not captured some strategic points. But even if you do, it still quits with the same reason. AI could be more advanced and aggressive but the game play is really fun. Please ignore previous review ### 5/5 — Hex Games *2016-05-05* Started playing hex strategy games 30 years ago but they took forever and inevitably a child would ruin it by knocking the pieces to kingdom come. So I love the computer versions and gettysberg is one of the best and can be played in 3-4 hours. Only complaint is I would love a re-inactement option at the end of the game also as well as setting Objectives to win the game, give the option to fight to the bitter end or let the computer send defeated units off the field of play? NB I bought an iPad Pro which makes the game even better! ### 5/5 — Better now *2015-02-02* Yes, victory conditions are still a bit obtuse, but I know when I've won or not With the new patch the weird bugs are resolved and the game basically achieves its potential and is the best that Hunted Cow has produced to date with more detail nuance and flavor than everything that preceded it ### 4/5 — Decent for the price *2023-12-14* I’m somewhat surprised at the quality of the gameplay. One item definitely missing is a advance button to check through the units on the battlefield to ensure everything is being moved according to the player’s plan. Thanks guys! ### 3/5 — Disappointing *2019-08-23* I’ve been a fan of Hunted Cow but this game has problems. I played the whole battle and it worked fine but the one day battles stop allowing attacks after several rounds. Don’t waste your time and money till this is fixed. Shame. Their other civil war products are much better. ### 3/5 — No pass and play option *2019-04-02* Great game love the American civil war and love your games but you mean to tell me that you charged me 5 bucks for a game that doesn’t have pass and play by the way you would get a lot more buyers if you add pass and play ### 3/5 — Still needs some tweaking *2015-04-03* I've played the full campaign scenario twice, both times as the Federals and would have won both games except for the "invulnerable" Rebel units. Several units, most of them with a combat strength of 10 or higher, cause the game to lock up when they are fired upon. Melee attacks are successful, but that is a costly way to conduct the war. I do like the combat analysis feature, but would like all of the units to suffer loss from enemy fire. ### 3/5 — Broken *2015-01-03* Update made it so all units are in unformed and cannot be put into any other formation.
