### 5/5 — Glad it’s back

*2023-01-18, version 5.8*

Great to have it back in the store.

### 4/5 — Can’t access the transporter screen once level 1 is completed. It worked once but then not since

*2022-12-27, version 5.8*

It worked once but then not since. Using iOS 16.2 . I have 13 pro max. I’ve deleted and redownloaded, restarted, no fix

### 2/5 — Doors won’t open.

*2022-09-28, version 5.8*

I’m using a PS5 controller. I can do everything except open doors.

### 5/5 — Amazing on iPad but xbox controller not working under water

*2022-07-14, version 5.8*

Thank you so much for making this available on iPad, The only issue is that the controller does not correctly work under water

### 5/5 — Great classic gaming

*2022-04-14, version 5.7*

This was one of my first shooters on PC, and I loved it. Coming back to it so many years later is fantastic. It really holds up and offers the same simple, great shooter experience I miss in many newer games. Guns and movement with no special moves or finishers, or anything else.

Playing with the controller makes aiming a bit more challenging, but playing on normal offers a great challenge while not being overly frustrating. I have a mouse and keyboard for the iPad, but there does not appear to be any support for it, which is a bit of a shame, but not a big deal.

### 5/5 — Almost perfect

*2022-03-27, version 5.7*

This is a high-quality build of the classic game from the 90s which was a quantum leap forward for the FPS at the time.

Put a few hours into it and enjoying some nostalgia,

My only complaint is that I had so much trouble finding out how to invert the y-axis using a Bluetooth controller. I did do it (or else this wouldn’t be a 5 star review) but it took way too long to figure it out.

### 5/5 — Today my mum is going to get me doom

*2022-02-21, version 5.7*

Wooooooooooooooo

### 5/5 — Classic gaming goodness

*2021-08-16, version 5.6*

Never played any Marathon, always knew of the nostalgic connections with halo and Bungie. Just spent some time with it, and it deserves its reputation. Right up there with Doom (even more so). With controller support this is a classic game that will never leave me iPad. PS: new players make sure to tone down the joystick speeds!! It’s way to high at default settings.

### 4/5 — Great game! But no sound on iPad!

*2021-05-19, version 5.6*

Great game! But no sound on iPad!

### 5/5 — Classic Mac game brought to iOS !!

*2021-04-24*

Thank you thank you thank you!

### 5/5 — Great port

*2021-01-17, version 5.2*

I love the power up refill option in the pause menu.
If it had an option for weapon selection, & shield amount it would be even better.

### 5/5 — make another one Bungie

*2020-11-18, version 5.2*

plEASE

### 5/5 — An excellent port of an excellent game

*2020-06-10, version 5.2*

Maybe I’m being a Nostalgia Neddy here, but M2:D was my first video game, back on an old iMac, and it holds my standard for deep-as-you-want-to-get narrative gameplay. Aleph One has allowed me to rediscover all three Marathon games, and having them on my iPad has been a joy. Currently using a Nimbus controller, which has made the experience fresh again.

The few bugs I’ve seen, I’ve sent an email, and lo, they were fixed in the next update. The developers are doing Durandal’s work without complaining, as any good Mjolnir Mark IV cyborg should.

### 5/5 — Works flawlessly

*2020-05-19, version 5.2*

Amazing to have this fully functional on iOS all these years later. Thanks for making this happen!

### 4/5 — Nostalgic Shooter

*2020-04-27, version 5.1*

This game’s single player is an absolute blast to play. The hud on the multiplayer is wonky, though, with the crosshair actually on the other side of the screen. If this issue was fixed it’d definitely be a five star.

### 5/5 — Time Machine

*2020-04-14, version 5.1*

I played the demo on a greyscale PowerMac. This is like a time machine. But in color.

### 5/5 — Help

*2020-02-19, version 5.1*

How do I Change from HD to classic graphics ?

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — slow performance

*2025-03-06, version 6.4*

I update and now choppy performance. Was perfect before. YES, even on classic mode. Not happy.

### 1/5 — Needs controller support

*2022-05-08, version 5.8*

Needs controller support

### 1/5 — After new update no go

*2021-11-06, version 5.7*

New update crashes to desktop when starting game.
I’m on iOS 12.4

### 1/5 — Great, Classic game, but needs to be fixed. BIG TIME

*2015-11-03, version 2.10*

I bought the HD and master chief mode packages for all three games, and not one of them will work on HD and whenever I try to play in a level farther in the game with master chief mode, the game crashes. This never happened before or on my iPad. Maybe it's an iOS 9 compatibility problem, but whatever it is, it needs to be fixed, ASAP.

### 1/5 — Doesn't work

*2015-08-23, version 2.10*

I'm on a iPhone 6 Plus with IOS 8.1.2 and all 3 of the Marathon games are not working. I haven't played the series before so I was hoping this port would work. I'll update my software today, but since the last update for the game was 2 years ago I doubt it will do much.

### 1/5 — Broken under iOS 8

*2015-02-19, version 2.10*

There is a show stopper bug that prevents you from starting a game. The port was awesome but clearly not supported any longer.

### 1/5 — iPhone 6 Compatibility

*2015-02-08, version 2.10*

Looking forward to playing marathon portably, but the game will not play on the iPhone 6. I press new game and select my difficulty, but then it takes me back to the difficulty selection until it automatically quits the app. Please fix this.

### 1/5 — App broken on iOS 8/iPhone 6

*2015-01-06, version 2.10*

The game no longer works after the upgrade to iOS 8. Any attempt to load a previously saved game or start a new game will cause the app to freeze, constantly loading the menu until the game crashes.

### 1/5 — Classic game, terrible controls

*2014-10-08, version 2.10*

The one thing a game of this nature RELIES on are good controls.

Unfortunately, they freeze up, the placement is poor, and on my 5s when the my thumb on the dpad goes past the edge of the viewport (it doesn't support the wider display) it just forgets about my thumb altogether. This makes strafing left very annoyingly difficult and unnatural.

Please fix it and make this game great again.

### 1/5 — Graphics 👎

*2014-09-13, version 2.10*

Hard to see anything

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Still a Great Game after so many years

*2026-08-20, version 6.7*

Thanks for this awesome port. Plays great with a mobile controller. Just a quick question if it’s possible to autorotate in either 90 degrees clockwise versus counterclockwise. I have a Gamesir x5 Lite but the plug needs the phone to turn right not left so the app boots upsidedown when plugged it.

Thanks and left a tip for bringing this to iOS which makes it great to play on the go.

### 5/5 — Update for controllers?

*2026-03-27, version 6.7*

I love that this exists! I tried running it with a PlayStation 5 controller, and it does work, but the interface for switching the buttons shows up as blank, and I absolutely cannot function without an inverted Y axis for looking around. (The joysticks are also extremely sensitive.) Any chance of an update to support configuring PlayStation controllers?

### 5/5 — Good, but FYI

*2025-10-05, version 6.7*

This is a solid port and I’m always playing this on long trips, but there is an untextured ceiling right next to the last portal of the final level. It didn’t harm my experience but it’ll look nicer with a texture.

### 5/5 — Outstanding!!!

*2024-11-20, version 6.2*

The lasted version is unbelievable. High quality graphics with HDR, spatial head tracking sounds and now, a soundtrack. I am so proud to see how this game has been shown love over the years since it was originally released in 1995. I still have my original copy that I played on an Apple Performa 630. Back then I had to play with really low quality graphics to run fast. I never thought I’d get a chance to play with high graphics, especially at what it has today.

### 5/5 — Amazing! Get a gamepad

*2024-04-05, version 5.12*

I have not played these 3 games in nearly 30 years. Get a $20 game pad on Amazon. The experience is better than the original.

### 5/5 — Great port, thank you for gyro support!

*2024-01-16, version 5.11*

Last time I visited these I remember wishing there were a way to use gyro since swiping gets a bit old with boomer hands. But thank you!

### 5/5 — Literally one of my favourite games

*2023-07-07, version 5.8*

Peak 90s gaming

### 5/5 — Great to be able to play on iPad

*2023-06-20, version 5.8*

Brings back memories and still good fun. I just wish we had ability to play with keyboard but it’s still great as it is 😎

### 5/5 — Great classic game, but a fatal bug…

*2023-03-26, version 5.8*

I enjoy playing this old game from my childhood, glad it’s been adapted to the iPad. Relearning the controls for touch screen is fun, like relearning how to play the game in a way.

I noticed the in several levels, when stepping on a certain square, the gun graphic is replaced by a large black square that bounces as you walk. It makes it impossible to see and game unplayable, especially when 2x guns are activated. The only way to get around it is to anticipate the polygon and switch to a non-essential weapon before you get there. Very annoying. Would be great to fix, and i can give details and screenshots if needed. The black graphic disappears when level is completed…

It would be great to see Forge for the iPad, haha, i know that might be too much too ask. I loved creating and games when i was a kid, and that creative aspect from games has been lost long ago unfortunately. Also, making Marathon playable modern multiplayer would be revolutionary, it was maybe the first FPS to have that option i believe.

Other than the bug, it is great as it is at the moment

### 5/5 — Good game

*2023-02-15, version 5.8*

Normally I don’t care much for praising old shooters just for being good for their time. That said, Durandal actually holds up. It’s probably one of the best single player shooters still remaining on the AppStore, and the level design is actually good unlike the original Marathon.

7/7, can’t wait for the sequel that will surely have a comprehensible story.
