## What is CleanEats?

CleanEats cuts through the noise and tells you one thing: should you eat here?

The official NYC health inspection site is slow, hard to search, and doesn't work by GPS. CleanEats fixes all of that — open the app, see what's safe on your block, and make a smarter choice before you walk in.

HOW IT WORKS
CleanEats downloads the full NYC restaurant inspection database — 30,000+ restaurants — directly to your phone. All searches are instant and work completely offline. No backend server, no waiting.

Every restaurant gets a simple verdict: EAT or SKIP.

EAT = only A grades, no vermin violations in the past 2 years (configurable)
SKIP = failed grades, vermin history, or both

EAT OR SKIP
- Green pins = EAT. Red pins = SKIP. See the whole block at a glance.
- Only about 42% of NYC restaurants pass the full test — now you'll know which ones.
- Vermin flag surfaces roach, mice, rat, and pest violations specifically
- Projected grades for ungraded inspections based on numeric score

SEARCH & DISCOVER
- GPS map shows restaurants near you with instant R-tree spatial queries
- Full-text search by name, address, or cuisine — results sorted by distance
- Browse by neighborhood, filter by cuisine type (all NYC cuisines supported)

FULL INSPECTION HISTORY
- Every inspection, every violation, fully expandable
- Vermin indicators on every inspection row
- See the grade trend over time — not just the current letter on the door

POWERFUL FILTERS
- Toggle which grades qualify: A, B, C, or Pending
- Allow or block restaurants with vermin history
- Set qualification period: 1, 2, or 3 years of history
- Filter by cuisine type
- Hide SKIP restaurants from the map entirely
- All filters persist across sessions

FRESH DATA, DAILY
- Database updated daily via NYC Open Data (DOHMH Restaurant Inspection Results)
- ~11MB download, checks for updates on every launch
- WiFi-only download option to protect your mobile data
- Works fully offline after first download

DATA SOURCE
All inspection data comes from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Restaurant Inspection Results dataset (NYC Open Data, dataset 43nn-pn8j). Public domain.

Built by LaserBoy Studios.

### 5/5 — Finally!

*2026-04-05*

I’ve known for years that an A grade doesn’t mean a restaurant is necessarily clean. I only eat at A+ places, and this app lets me find them quickly!

### 5/5 — I love this app!

*2026-04-01*

I never eat at an establishment without checking the health grades first. For anyone who has used the NYC Department of Health website, you know there are a lot of hoops to jump through to get to that one grade. This app simplifies the process and it takes no time at all to find what you’re looking for (or not looking for). This app is the best!
