Overall sentiment: positive **Pros** - 🚀 Excellent for vocabulary building - 👍 Fun and engaging learning experience - 🤩 Visually appealing with great GIFs - 💪 Helps track and improve vocabulary - 🤖 Accurate assessment of vocabulary level **Cons** - 🐛 Issues with voice recognition and pronunciation - 🤔 GIFs don't always match word meanings - 🔒 Overly restrictive free version, requires subscription - 🤯 Frustrating UI issues like being kicked out of lists - 😕 Inaccurate or irrelevant word recommendations **Commonly reported bugs** - Frequent app crashes - Streak screen gets stuck - Daily recommendation not updating - Volume control issues, can't mute app sounds **Most requested features** - Add ability to take notes on words - Option to customize or disable GIFs - Allow users to choose words for practice quizzes - Implement syncing across multiple devices - Provide a one-time purchase option instead of subscription ## Newest reviews (17 of 131) ### 3/5 — Improvement over last couple app engagements x *2026-03-30, version 3.4.13* I love this app a lot of the time which makes it hurt when it betrays me ### 2/5 — bad with pronunciation and syntax *2026-03-06, version 3.4.13* pokes fun ay real world situations thats funny now but will get very dark later if not curtailed ### 2/5 — issues *2025-01-30, version 3.4.11* - forces you to have the volume up and plays sounds even when muted and silenced - gifs on practice quiz frequently do not match up with the word, or contradict previously marked answers. ex. vocab word is deft-skillful, quick. they play a gif of a cartoon hero punching towards the camera rapidly. when you check that it matches the word deft it marks it incorrect. there’s others that make very little sense or are too vague to really work in favor or against. -the ui for the discover page is either glitchy or just poorly planned. every time you add a word to your list of known words it backs you out of the list it was on. this makes it so every single word you have to go to the list, scroll all the way down, mark memorized, get kicked back to discover screen, then do it all over again. when each list is 30-40 words long this takes forever. super unintuitive. the app has potential, but the issues make this app feel like a time-waster. it’s simple enough to find vocab online (quizlet, dictionary.com, merriam-webster, etc.) and put it in another app that can cycle through them (notion, mochi, obsidian, etc.). i don’t think this app is worth using free, and i can’t imagine that it would be worth 10+ dollars a month. ### 4/5 — good foundation with a few issues *2025-01-26* edit: why is the fireplace animation in “my library” not able to be silenced? i heard crackling which honestly freaked me out since my volume was off, to which i discovered that even if you keep your finger on the lower volume button it continues to raise your volume and won’t turn off. i’m not sure if this is intentional or a glitch, but whenever i add a vocab word from discover page (on one of the word lists) to known vocab it auto opens to “tap to add words”. the only reason i think it may be a glitch is because i did this for several words without it opening and now it’s started popping up each time. it’s pretty inconvenient to be an intentional feature, so i’m hoping it’s a bug that will be fixed. if you need to add multiple words at once it’s inconvenient to have to back out of this pop every single time. i’d also like to suggest a one time fee to become a member. i think it’s fair keeping games and quizzes limited for free users, but it would be nice to see a non-subscription based model as well. please keep the words and vocab lists unlimited though. ### 3/5 — speaking features *2024-04-15, version 3.4.8* i only just now downloaded this app and based on the first 10 minutes of usage, i have mixed feelings. the overall idea and execution is relatively nice, however the speaking feature is terrible. i’m not sure exactly what’s wrong with it but it cannot detect most of the words i was trying to say (not user error trust me) and kept saying incorrect to the point where i just had to say i couldn’t speak right now. ### 4/5 — Fixes needed *2024-03-29, version 3.4.8* Fix streak screen gets stuck ### 4/5 — A good product needs improvement *2024-03-17, version 3.4.7* The product is useful for English learners who want to build their own word list. However, it has two obvious flaws: inaccurate GIFs and inaccurate voice recognition for word pronunciation. The flaws are acceptable and that’s why I’m still using it. I have a request. Could you add a new setting to stop the Daily Recommendation word list? I don’t have a strong accent so it’s just not a good test the voice recognition technology just isn’t there yet. Otherwise not bad but I still cancelled my subscription. ### 4/5 — Notes feature needed *2022-04-29, version 2.6.2* Great app but absolutely second the need to add notes to a word. Sometimes the definition in climb doesn’t have enough information for me to truly understand the word and being able to add a note with a secondary definition or localised example would be fantastic! ### 4/5 — Fun adult learning *2022-04-11, version 2.6.1* I really love this app, makes learning new words fun and engaging. I would give this app 5 starts, but when I say a word correctly 50-60% of the time it dictates my voice incorrect. Makes me annoyed. I though nothing of it until it gave me multiple warnings that the same thing was used to scam people and log into their account and do thing with it. Do not download this, it’s a terrible app even if it seems like a dream app. it’s not worth it, I would just find a good study then this. ### 1/5 — App crashes *2022-10-20* This is annoying, frequently app crashes. Can you please update and try again? Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for reporting. ### 1/5 — What a shame... *2021-04-27, version 1.8.1* The reason behind a 1 star rating... Unfortunately the app is categorized as free on the App Store, which don’t get me wrong, it is free, but you can’t use the app for its CORE function without paying a subscription fee. Personally, I rather pay $3.99 (or roughly that amount) for the app upfront than pay a reoccurring charge. I understand that people have to make a living, there has to be some sort of profit margin for the developers and whatnot, but putting a price on education, AFTER, giving us the app for free, that’s just a pity. Not to mention, there are only 3 mini games and the quiz function that actually teach you the vocabulary. Why not a matching game? Even Duolingo has a wider variety of ways for teaching its users. In other words: -Nicely designed -Not a lot of variety -Not worth having unless you are willing to pay for the service which STARTS at $9.99/ month. ### 1/5 — Don't you have a common sense? *2021-04-11* When I have my put my phone on silent mode my volume is turned down to 0% and when I am doing practice quiz on app it automatically started sound. Are you kidding? Inadvertent was the word of the day. Really? The words are too easy and there doesn’t seem to be a way to adjust my level. I can’t tell the app that I already know words, can’t redo the assessment. Nothing! The games are strange. I don’t see how they help you with vocabulary. The hunt game for example. Just because I know big words doesn’t mean I can spot them as options on a grid of random and jumbled letters. I’m supposed to pull things like erudition out of the air? The gif game doesn’t change words. None of them were challenging: tiara, quicksand, etc.. these are words even young children know. And it keeps being the same set. I don’t see anything to indicate how words become “learned” and the subscription cost is high. Especially given the issues I’m having so far. The gifs associated with some words aren’t obvious in meaning. It’s frustrating to be marked wrong for a word I frequently use because I can’t tell if the gif matches. Zealous for example. The gif in question showed a drag queen performing. Could you say they were being zealous? Maybe? But I got it wrong. Первый вопрос «что означает это слово» и несколько вариантов ответов определений этого слова, которые написаны на английском! Комон! Я и слова ещё не знаю, а вы уже мне предлагаете, чтоб я прочитал и как то понял правильное определение слова! Далее « рекомендованный список» просто АД! Je spécifie que j’ai choisi une option de base sans abonnement il y environ 8 jours. Du coup, j’ai désinstallé jeu. Je suis très déçu de cette application qui ne fonctionne pas correctement et on ne peut rien faire pour signaler le bug, il faut juste payer pour continuer à jouer.
