## What is ClimbShade?

ClimbShade tells you whether your climbing area will be baking in the sun or tucked in cool shade — and whether the conditions are actually good enough to climb.

SHADE MAP
See real terrain shadow simulation on an interactive map. Scrub through any hour of the day to watch shadows move across the crag in real time. No more guessing whether that south-facing wall is climbable at 2pm in July.

SEND CONDITIONS
ClimbShade combines temperature, humidity, wind, and recent rainfall with your rock type's friction profile to give you a simple green / amber / red conditions score. Granite on a crisp morning? Green. Sandstone after rain? Red. Know before you drive an hour to the crag.

WEATHER FORECAST
Hourly forecasts show temperature, humidity, wind speed, and precipitation for the next 7 days — all in a glanceable chart designed for climbers, not meteorologists.

FIND AREAS
Search thousands of climbing areas and routes powered by OpenBeta, the open-source climbing database. Tap any area to see its shade window, conditions score, and full weather breakdown.

YOUR LOCATION
ClimbShade uses your GPS to surface nearby climbing areas automatically, so you always know what's climbable right now, right where you are.

WORKS FOR ALL CONDITIONS
Whether you're chasing shade in the summer heat or hunting for sun on a cold winter day, ClimbShade helps you pick the right climbing area at the right time.

ClimbShade is built for climbers who want to spend less time guessing and more time on rock.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.8 — 2026-08-03

We rebuilt ClimbShade's shade engine from scratch — replacing a third-party SDK with a custom shadow engine that's faster, more accurate, and works reliably on iOS. Also included: sharper shade at popular crags, a new time scrubber to watch shade move through the day, more reliable maps, and a fix for Navigate occasionally showing the wrong approach distance/time.

### 1.2.3 — 2026-07-15

This update focuses on more reliable navigation and offline support:

  • Approach routes now pick the correct trailhead and parking location far more reliably, and follow
real trail paths with elevation-aware time estimates instead of straight-line guesses.
  • Offline downloads are more robust — route counts, map pins, and elevation data now stay accurate
  when you're out of signal.
  • Area and route search is faster and no longer returns duplicate or mismatched results.
  • Refreshed app icon and splash screen.
  • Numerous stability and navigation fixes throughout the app.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-06-18

Grade Filters
Find your next climb faster. The route list now has per-style grade filters with chips that match the grade system for each style. Dial in your range and see only the routes that fit.

Faster, Smarter Search
Search results for both areas and routes come back faster and more relevant. Nearby areas load from your GPS location directly.

Offline Support
ClimbShade works better without a signal now:
- Saved areas and their routes are instantly searchable offline
- Approach routes cache after your first visit — Navigate works even when you lose signal on the drive in
- The navigation map loads without a connection
- Downloads by state are now available — no areas go missing

Navigate Tab
Switching between areas no longer reloads the map. Approach distances and trailhead detection are more accurate, and the selected area pin stays visible after you dismiss the area detail sheet.

  Bug Fixes
  - Fixed GPS location not updating
  - Fixed routes appearing empty on first load
  - Fixed search results not opening the area detail
  - Stability improvements throughout

### 1.2 — 2026-06-12

Switching crags in the Navigate tab is now instant — no map reload, no blank
  screen, just a smooth transition.

Route lists are faster and more complete, and cached data refreshes
automatically after 7 days so you're always seeing up-to-date results.

The grade filter now supports separate roped and boulder grade ranges at the
same time. Your ranges are remembered when switching between systems — flip
from YDS to French and your grades convert; switch to V-Scale and your YDS
range is saved for when you come back. The filter bar shows each grade range
paired with its climb style so you always know what's active.
