Otherwise a community chat would be cool too! ### 3/5 — Great, few places for improvement *2026-04-02* Love this app. It is missing some clouds like roll/rotor clouds and scud clouds, which I would like to ID. I wish the reviewers could suggest a cloud type when it is rejected, and that both parties could leave a note. Ex: this is near an ocean. Or “see top right”. I also wish I could change the date/location for clouds I uploaded too late (and therefore can’t get verified)- bugs me that they aren’t accurate in my collection. ### 4/5 — Needs other options *2026-02-11* I understand that they don’t allow users to upload photos since it would allow people to cheat, but it ought to allow users to modify their spotting. I saw a Sun Dog and, in my haste, put it as a Sun Pillar. It’s wrong so I had to just take a picture of my picture to get my points—I should be allowed to revise the cloud spotted option. ### 3/5 — Could be better *2025-12-03* This app is interesting and educational but too restrictive. Users should be able to add photos from their picture library, not just photos taken with the app - because the app can be slow, and if you’re not near Wi-Fi or have poor cellular service it won’t work at all. I’ve been unable to submit several of my cloud sightings because of this. So disappointing. Users should also be able to correct the selected cloud type (identification) if the “verification” process has marks it as incorrect! ### 3/5 — A lot of potential *2025-11-27* I was hoping this would be the iNaturalist app for clouds but as is it has some major flaws holding it back. The biggest problem is the only photos you can use are ones taken directly in the app. Imagine the amount of community science data you could accumulate if you can add in older photos as long as you know the date/time/location! The cloud karma is also an interesting feature but it punishes new users who know nothing about clouds and most likely encourages mis-identifications. Finally it would be nice to know if the photos are actually being used for science in meaningful ways. Published papers, new identified cloud types, etc. just something to know that uploading photos is contributing to something greater than ourselves. I’m excited something like this exists but hope it keeps getting better. It has so much potential!! ### 3/5 — Could be better *2025-11-22* This app is interesting and educational but too restrictive. Users should be able to add photos from their picture library, not just photos taken with the app. Users should also be able to correct the selected cloud type (identification) if the “verification” process has marks it as incorrect. Finally, the “cloud karma” feature is unfair to beginners who don’t know enough about cloud identification, and probably encourages a lot of misidentified clouds. ### 3/5 — Room for Improvement *2025-11-21* This app is awesome in theory, but only barely passable in practice. While the library of cloud varieties and subtypes has great information, it’s slow to load and a bit disorganized. More problematically, the “submit spotting” camera often takes up to a minute to open once you’ve selected what cloud you’ll be spotting. This means that oftentimes I’ve missed my chance to get a good picture, especially of fleeting cloud formations. I’ve also had issues where the picture I took doesn’t upload, and I’ve had to re-open the submit spotting window, losing the sighting in the process. The Sky Feed is a fun feature, and I love being able to see a live-ish feed of clouds from all around the world, but I think it could benefit from an option to suggest an alternative cloud classification for incorrect sightings. Sometimes people submit beautiful photos with incorrect classifications, and it’s a shame to have to vote to not count those towards their collection. It’d be nice if incorrect spottings could be resubmitted under a different cloud type to be tried again. Furthermore, I sometimes see features people missed in their photos (like sundogs in simple cirrus cloud photos). It’d be great if other users could suggest alternate cloud types for these situations, and have that information passed to the original poster. Another addition that would make this app better would be some kind of kudos feature. It’d be nice to congratulate users on especially beautiful or well-defined could examples. It’d be even better to be able to “follow” other users to see a feed of their sightings. There are usernames of frequent posters that I recognize and look forward to seeing submissions from, but I have to catch them in the sky feed before other people vote them away from sight. While it is a bit of a bummer that previous sightings can’t be uploaded from the camera roll, I can appreciate that that could turn into a moderation nightmare. Overall, I do love this app, but am frustrated by how much of its potential is unrealized. I’d consider paying for a Cloud Appreciation Society membership to help support further development, if it were go to quality of life improvements instead of tweaks to the cloud identifier AI I hardly touch. ### 3/5 — I love everything but… *2025-10-24* Maybe it’s me but I can’t figure out how to upload a cloud from my photo library for a sighting? I can ills via the AI feature but I don’t see an option to add it to my collection. It seems like I can only add clouds by taking a photo in the app but I have clouds in my photo library that I want to upload! ### 3/5 — Bring back the badges and stars *2025-04-12* I miss the challenge of the old CloudSpotter app… not so much fun anymore 😕 ### 3/5 — Decent App With Some Flaws *2025-01-11* The app has a few advantages such as the high quality photos they provide for each cloud and the Step by Step Wizard and CloudSpotterAI. The flaws are when viewing spotted clouds it takes a long time for the quality to come, and sometimes the app wont register my spottings. ### 4/5 — Needs more options *2023-09-10* I like the app a lot, but I really wish you could put a pin on the cloud picture to add multiple labels of cloud types. Because often times, there are multiple types of clouds in one picture. With the current app each picture can only have one label. ### 3/5 — Good for the pictures and IDs -that’s it *2021-04-25* If you want to enjoy the pictures and to identify clouds and optical effects, this is great. If you actually want to participate in the society, this is terrible. There is no info under the profile. You can’t see your groups at all, or get your messages. It’s also a huge PITA to log in (why do I have to log in to the app? It isn’t like this is my bank). ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Rubbish password requirements *2026-06-26* Cannot use without registration. Tried registration, but then could not be bothered because of onerous password requirements despite using Apple password keychain. Fix it and I might reconsider. CloudSpotter Team ### 1/5 — CANT UPLOAD EXISTING PHOTOS! *2025-08-16* it’s a great app, but you can only save photos to the app by using the app itself. you can’t upload previously taken photos. very disappointing. ### 1/5 — APP misinforms about chem trails *2020-01-29* This app seems like a deliberate attempt to misinform the public about chem trails, calling them contrails. ### 2/5 — The AI is dumb *2025-08-31* I tried putting in a cumulonimbus picture and the ai said it was a contrail cloud when u can literally see the cumulonimbus anvil shape 💀 contrail looks nothing like the picture i put in ### 2/5 — Downloaded for previous Photos *2025-07-31* I saw this app mentioned in a Reddit post about clouds and love collecting apps to identify aspects of the natural world, but was severely disappointed to realize that I cannot upload already existing photos onto the app to identify clouds on. I live in an area with a semi-common occurrence of Asperitas clouds, and wanted to document the times I’ve caught it on camera. However, I cannot do that as I can’t upload old pictures. Very disappointing and I guess I’ll just delete the app because I have little use for it in the summer. ### 2/5 — Can’t submit photos easily *2025-06-14* This app used to be amazing but it no longer allows you to submit photos taken earlier or with another camera this means if you have a professional camera or even if you want to use the camera settings on your phone, you can’t. You are required to take the photo within the app, which gives you more limited camera functions, and categorize the cloud in that moment. This transition happened without warning while I was traveling internationally. I was disappointed when I returned home that I couldn’t upload any of my cloud photos from my trip. ### 2/5 — Almost great, but has serious issues *2022-08-27* This app has the potential to be a great cloud spotting app. However, it has what appears to be a serious bug. When spotting clouds, it does not save what you’ve spotted. There is a location in the app to view spotted clouds, but no matter how you spot/identify a cloud, they never are saved to the app. Aside from that, there is a serviceable ai cloud identifier in the app, but this often misidentifies. For learners, this can be frustrating. Additionally, there does not seem to be any user community on the app. In other words, you cannot view other users clouds, or have another user identify your cloud. All together, this app sort of works but has some serious issues. ### 2/5 — Already a CAS Member log in? *2021-03-30* I’m already an early on CAS member.
