## What is CodexTutor?

Build your vocabulary in historical languages by reading iconic texts in Latin, Greek, French, Arabic, and German. Instead of practicing language with boring stock sentences, read the real texts that shaped civilization.

For centuries, scholars learned languages by studying significant texts, not canned exercises. In CodexTutor, we are inspired by that approach.

HOW IT WORKS

A passage arrives as a stack of cards, one chunk of the original on each. Read it. Tap to check the translation. Swipe right if you had it, left if you didn't.

Tap any word for its dictionary entry: headword, part of speech, what it means. No hovering crib telling you what the sentence says. The lexicon is at your elbow and the meaning is yours to assemble.

At the end, you will be able to read the whole passage. Then, you will move on to the next passage!

VOCABULARY THAT KNOWS YOUR TEXT

Every text carries its own vocabulary, ordered by how often each word appears in that text — not a generic
frequency list. When previewing vocabulary, high frequency words are prioritized. The system is meant to making reading the real text easier.

THE LIBRARY

Readers can choose from iconic texts in Latin, Greek, Arabic, French, and German. Modern languages and some ancient texts have audio. Homer and Virgil. More texts are always being added.

WORKS OFFLINE. NO ACCOUNT.

Texts download once and stay on your phone. There is no sign-in, nothing to subscribe to, and nothing about your reading leaves your device.

### 5/5 — Great Teaching Tool!

*2026-08-20*

From various languages including Greek, Latin, Arabic and more, there are many different passages to help learn and master these languages. You can even generate flashcards from text to break things down.

### 5/5 — Nice balance of text vs vocab for study

*2026-08-20*

Love how it’s built around whole phrases but you can still check and review individual vocab. Way better concept than traditional language apps where you have to read nonsense—emphasizes learning the actual text. Also great curated selection of “canonical” texts, looking forward to the library expanding.

### 5/5 — Easy to use & engaging

*2026-04-27*

The breakdowns of each story into sections that are broken down again into digestible pieces makes it easy to understand. The playback feature is my favorite! Would be nice if more languages and books/stories were offered.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-20

Studying works offline, with no account. Your progress syncs across your iCloud devices.

Each passage deals out as a stack of cards, one chunk of the original on each. Tap to check the translation. Swipe right when you knew it, left when you didn't.

NEW — VOCABULARY
Every text now carries its own vocabulary, ordered by how often each word appears in that text rather than by a generic frequency list — so the first set you learn is the one doing the most work on the page. Words you have met come back when they are due.

NEW — PREVIEW THE WORDS
Meet a passage's words before you meet the passage. If you already know them, it says so and sends you to read instead.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-06-20

• Reading now builds your review deck — finishing a passage adds its vocabulary to
flashcards, in both recognition and production.

  • Pre-learn a passage's vocabulary before reading it, from the new passage menu.

  • Long-press any word — while reading, reviewing flashcards, or browsing quotes — for its
full grammar breakdown and real examples from the source texts.

  • Share passages and quotes directly from the app.

  • A guided first-time experience for new readers.

  • Improved literal translations across Arabic, French, Greek, and Latin — even for plural
  pronouns, no more dropped words.

  • Cleaner end-of-session screen on flashcards.

  • A calmer passage list and assorted refinements throughout.

### 1.0 — 2026-04-27
