## What is Coherent Mind?

The Mystical Experience Questionnaire, on your iPhone.

The MEQ30 is the most studied psychometric tool for measuring mystical-type experiences. Researchers at Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College London use it to assess the depth and character of experiences occasioned by psychedelics, meditation, breathwork, and other contemplative practices. This app brings the validated 30-item questionnaire into a private journal you can use after every journey.

Score any journey with the full MEQ30
Rate each item on the standard 0 to 5 scale. Get instant totals for the four core dimensions: mystical (unity, sacredness, noetic quality), positive mood, transcendence of time and space, and ineffability. See how close your experience came to a "complete" mystical experience using the 60 percent threshold from the research literature.

Log substance and dose
Record what you took, how much, by what route, and at what time. Note set, setting, and any supplements or co-administered substances. Your data, your device, your records.

Write a journey note
Capture insights, imagery, emotions, music, intentions, and integration reflections. Tag entries by theme so you can find them later.

See your patterns across sessions
The dashboard plots MEQ30 totals over time, breaks down each dimension, and surfaces correlations between dose, substance, set, and outcome. Heatmaps show which days, doses, and contexts produced the deepest experiences.

Compare and analyze
Filter by substance, dose range, or date. Compare how different journeys score in your own record. Identify a personal dose response curve. Track changes in wellbeing scores between sessions.

Built for people who take this seriously
Whether you are participating in a clinical trial, working with a guide or therapist, doing solo practice, or running an ongoing personal protocol, the app gives you the same instrument the researchers use. The MEQ30 has been validated across studies at Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College London. Having your own scores over time turns a string of singular experiences into a body of evidence you can learn from.

Privacy first
All data lives on your device. Optional iCloud sync keeps your records private to your Apple ID. No accounts, no ads, no tracking, no servers reading your notes.

Export anything
Export individual journeys or your full history as PDF, CSV, or JSON. Share with your therapist, integration coach, or research team. Keep a copy for yourself.

Who this is for
People doing intentional inner work who want better records.
Therapists, guides, and integration coaches who want a shared instrument with clients.
Clinical trial participants who want their own copy of their data.
Meditators, breathworkers, and contemplatives interested in measuring non-ordinary states.
Researchers and self-experimenters who want longitudinal data on their own practice.

What this app is not
The app does not provide substances, encourage illegal activity, or replace professional care. It is a measurement and journaling tool. Use it in whatever legal and safe context fits your practice.

About the MEQ30
The questionnaire grew out of decades of research into mystical experience, beginning with Walter Pahnke and Ralph Hood and refined by the Johns Hopkins team led by Roland Griffiths. The current 30-item version was published by MacLean, Leoutsakos, Johnson, and Griffiths in 2012 and has become a standard outcome measure in psychedelic clinical trials.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 2.3 — 2026-09-02

Version 2.3 is about the app getting out of your way: asking before it starts something, showing where its numbers come from, and finally letting you remove things it used to keep forever.

• The MEQ30 is offered, not assumed. Saving a new journey used to drop you straight into the questionnaire. It now asks whether you want to start it or come back to it later — and choosing later costs nothing, because the journey is already saved. You can take the MEQ30 whenever you're ready from the journey's own screen.

• Filters on the Journeys tab fold away, so your journeys start at the top of the screen again. The Filters row opens when you want it and says how many filters are narrowing the list, so a closed row never hides one.

• Missed check-ins no longer vanish. A commitment's check-in prompt used to leave no trace if you let it pass — the app simply forgot. Prompts that came and went now appear under "Check-ins due" on the Shadow Overview, and on the commitment itself. You can answer one late, or delete it and not be asked again. Because a missed prompt is now visible, it also breaks the quiet streak count; deleting it restores the streak.

• Check-ins can be deleted. Open a commitment's check-in history from its Part profile and remove any of them — one recorded by mistake, or one you missed. Deleting a check-in also stops that prompt coming back.

• Parts can be deleted. Previously a Part could only be retired or merged, never removed. A Part profile now offers Delete, and asks what should happen to the Shadow Encounters attributed to it: keep them in your journal without a Part attached, or delete them too. The confirmation says exactly how much goes. Commitments and check-ins on that Part always go with it, and any Part you had merged into it goes back to standing on its own with its own history intact. This cannot be undone.

• Sources & citations (Settings → About) is now grouped by instrument — MEQ30, CEQ, further reading — and each group says what the app actually took from those papers: which items, which factor map, which scoring rule.

• The CEQ now carries its own references. It links the published paper its 26 items, seven factors, response anchors, and scoring rule are taken from (Barrett et al. 2016), along with the survey of challenging experiences the questionnaire was derived from (Carbonaro et al. 2016).

No new permissions in this release, and backup files remain compatible in both directions.

This app is a journal, not a therapist. If you are working with difficult material, please involve a qualified clinician.

### 1.1 — 2026-07-07

Version 1.1

This update brings a new way to capture reflections, smoother charts, and a more reliable, responsive experience.

New
• On-device voice memo transcription. Turn your spoken reflections into searchable text with nothing leaving your phone. Opt in anytime from Settings.
• Interactive factor-trend charts. Pinch to zoom, scroll across sessions, and double-tap to reset the view.

Improved
• Faster, smoother performance. Saving entries, building exports, and cloud sync now run in the background, so the app stays responsive even with a large journal.
• Steadier sync across your paired devices.
• The calendar heatmap now renders your full journey history accurately.

Reliability
• If the app ever has trouble opening your encrypted journal, you now see a clear recovery screen with a retry option instead of a crash.
• Added an erase-and-start-over recovery path on the locked-out screen.

Privacy
• Added Delete All Data in Settings so you can remove everything from your device whenever you choose.

Your journeys stay encrypted on your device. Thank you for using the app.
