### 4/5 — Excellent, but…

*2026-08-22, version 5.1*

I use this app a lot, it is super helpful. But, I would like to see the transcription improved. I have to do a TON of editing to make sure the lines are exactly right. With today’s AI capabilities, I would think that the transcription could be better. Thanks.

### 2/5 — Lots of bugs

*2026-08-15, version 5.1*

This app is helpful, esp when in a pinch. But often — I’d say at least once a month, when I get on here to run lines, it immediately fails and aborts, stating “voice recognition error” … but the error message comes up before I’ve had a chance to say anything.
Also if you add a pause somewhere, and then close the app for any reason - maybe you were running lines then come back later to tape it - check where that pause is. More often than not, it’s moved.

### 2/5 — Should be better for the price

*2026-08-13, version 5.1*

Just finished taping today and editing it now. This is for a network level lead. The stress using this app is seriously not worth it. I’ve just watched amazing takes all ruined because the app didn’t “hear” the cue line and therefore that take is ruined. No rhyme or reason when this happens. This happens every single time I use it. It ruins those takes and then has a knock on negative effect to your psychology on the next take. I have literally deleted 22 takes — all because the app made them useless. I had 2 takes to use, which are fine and I’m happy with, but I would have liked to have offered some more variations.

If you are going to charge us 100% of the cost; the product should work 100% of the time. It doesn’t.

### 3/5 — App issues

*2026-08-09, version 5.1*

It’s really annoying that the app doesn’t recognize when I’m saying the line and I’ll have to see it multiple times for it to recognize that in speaking to it and for it to pick up my words to the point to where sometimes I need to shout for it to hear me. I don’t think this is the microphone issue because I can talk at a normal pace and my speech to text works my phone calls work my videos pick up audio. I hope this gets figured out because besides that the app is great.

### 4/5 — cues

*2026-08-07, version 5.1*

And it’s absolutely gotten better over these past few months, better vocal cue pickup always. Thank you for the tool my friends. Better and better every day and incredibly useful.

### 2/5 — Sound cuts out

*2026-08-01, version 5.1*

In theory, this is such a great idea, but unfortunately, the video are sub quality and the sound cuts out.

### 2/5 — Several bugs and inaccessible UI

*2026-07-30, version 5.1*

Fantastic concept but gets lost in the several bugs. Sometimes the app doesn't hear your sound cue properly during filming or just stops altogether during rehearsal. It's incredible overpriced to have these sorts of issues. The UI isn't the most accessible either, very cluttered and lowkey ugly too.

### 3/5 — Over all good

*2026-07-21, version 5.1*

Over all it’s pretty good. The recording of the lines and being able to fix the text is great. The options used for the replaying of the lines are also good.
The ONLY problem is, if you have a lot of lines and you want to just import them instead of manually recording them. The app doesn’t accept PDF files it seems like. Which is what all the scripts & sides that casting send are in…so kind of useless feature.

### 4/5 — It gets the job done

*2026-07-13, version 5.1*

Really liked the app so far super helpful but occasionally the mic doesnt pick up on recording for the “myself” feature the way it should. I have to exit the app and open it back up again, It’s still a pretty solid app and I use the app a lot I definitely recommend

### 3/5 — The cue sucks

*2026-07-09, version 5.1*

The cue word is ridiculous. Having to overly exaggerate pronouncing it will lead you to doing many failed takes. Or the fact how it glitches even after it hears the cue before it shows you the next line of dialogue. It needs an update to fix these issues

### 4/5 — Iain F

*2026-06-28, version 5.1*

I really like this app. The only downside is the silences that I add to the text keep slipping out of plan, which can mess things up whilst taping.

### 2/5 — Abandoned

*2026-06-09, version 5.1*

I’ve been using this for at least 5 years, but it seems like it has been abandoned. The last update was three years ago. I’ll be cancelling my subscription and finding a new line learner app. Scriptmate: Line Learner seems promising.

### 3/5 — Could be great

*2026-06-07, version 5.1*

It’s ok. I’ve encountered this super annoying problem where every single time I go into the app I’m interrupted to leave a review and/or a star rating. Most of the time I would choose the “not now” option to write a review, but it was hounding me every single time, even though I gave a star rating. Then every single time it kept hounding me for what I’d already done. Tried uninstalling and re-installing. Restarting phone. Every single time, even after leaving stars. I’ll gladly up my review if they fix this. It’s been countless weeks this way, so I’m probably just going to try another app, but all in all, ColdRead HAS been helpful to learn lines. I just record everything, imitating my castmates, which also serves as some fun for me as I absorb the basics.

### 4/5 — Really good app !

*2026-05-26, version 5.1*

Really changed my auditioning game ,
One downside , please fix the bugs !!!!!sometimes it won’t pick certain words , as if it just won’t recognize those words, and it could be frustrating

### 2/5 — the bugs the bugs

*2026-05-20, version 5.1*

i pay too much for this app for it to be bugging out all the time. that being said, great tool to memorize your lines, i just wish it ran how it was supposed to for the price

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Did not work

*2026-08-17, version 5.1*

Can’t import scenes or purchase membership. This is the most frustrating and useless use of my time

### 1/5 — Poor Quailty

*2026-07-29, version 5.1*

Unlike other line reading apps, there’s limited options to make changes in “Reader” voices. Regardless of settings, Reader’s voices on playback are always metallic sounding. And worst of all, saving a completed video is hit-or-miss. There have been numerous times where the app would not process the video when trying to save it to the phone. I’ve ended up wasting a lot of time losing many good self tapes because the app functioned poorly. For the above reasons, I’m not renewing the subscription.

### 1/5 — Nothing to help

*2026-06-19, version 5.1*

Have extensive questions and went through the two quick start and tutorial which indicates certain features available but not a step by step of how to do them. A chat bubble just came up saying it didn’t recognize the language and my finger slipped to Spanish. I will never get this! Where is the back button? Where is even the chat bubble I just interacted with? What a mess!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t pick up on my cues

*2026-06-19, version 5.1*

Doesn’t register my cue line, I have to manually constantly, which takes me out of the scene

### 1/5 — Crashes galore

*2026-06-02, version 5.1*

It crashes in the middle of read throughs, ALL THE TIME. It is not worth the money. I’m stressing out about getting these lines memorized and this app is NOT helping. It used to work well. No longer.

### 1/5 — Crashing + Doesn’t record with AirPods

*2026-05-26, version 5.1*

Consistently crashes a few lines in. I’m on the latest version of iOS. Re-recorded thinking it was a corrupted file. Nope. Also disabling the option to record audio on AirPods is so stupid. The majority of the time I’m recording for the purpose of running lines, not to use in absence of a reader. I don’t care about the quality so long as I hear the line. What mic is used needs to be up to the user. What are you, my mom? I get more background audio when I record without headphones. Change it back.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2026-05-23, version 5.1*

I tried for 45 min couldn’t get it to upload my scene

### 1/5 — Not a good self tape app at all does not allow you to use different voices for your reader

*2026-05-17, version 5.1*

Disappointed

### 1/5 — Broken beyond repair

*2026-05-06, version 5.1*

This app has an extreme capability of functioning how it markets. English apparently is the native language it was built on, however, it seems incapable of being able to understand the language at all. There have been multiple times during multiple takes where this has either jumped the line entirely not heard anything and or misheard stuff even though my addiction was beyond understandable. Waste of time, waste of space, the developer needs to get better.

### 1/5 — WTF

*2026-04-27, version 5.1*

I was trying it to see how it works. Literally couldn’t upload anything, type any lines. This was legit A WASTE of time and a download. Like I’m so confused smh

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — great for acting class!

*2026-06-23, version 5.1*

### 5/5 — My go to!

*2026-06-03, version 5.1*

I use it all the time! It is my go to to learn lines quickly and respond to the other characters. Acting is so much more than just knowing your lines. This app helps me learn and be present.

### 5/5 — Best for Actors with no readers

*2026-06-02, version 5.1*

Easy to use, I like the large print teleprompter because I’m kind of blind. And I like how it has a countdown timer for recording so you can get ready.

### 5/5 — Awesome but still could be improved

*2026-05-25, version 5.1*

Awesome app that helps auditions for actors, could be much better if we could add multiple characters to the script and switch between them when we want to try other characters.

### 5/5 — Love this app!

*2026-05-10, version 5.1*

Helps me so much with memorization! Well worth the subscription

### 5/5 — THE tool for those of us that like to Memorize

*2026-05-05, version 5.1*

Memorizing alone? coldRead is incredible!
No question, the best audition prep assist I've come across.

### 5/5 — Helps

*2026-04-26, version 5.1*

Has helped me hugely learning lines by myself. Or even putting last min tapes down. Actually helpful. Works well
