### 4/5 — Racine on a hand-held

*2021-06-26*

This is a competent, professional attempt to put a highly sophisticated language into the palm of your hand. Collins is a very good company, and is much helped here by the small vocabulary of French (compared to the unwieldy empire of English).
Of course it’s not enough. Secondary meanings are skimped, old forms are not much given, rare words become rarer here.
This app will do much more than let you say “Ung cafe seel voo play.” It will certainly let you talk to persons other than Mademoiselle D’Armentieres. It is fine for office and ordinary letters.
If you want to read Racine, the Medieval romances and Bossuet you need a big paper dictionary. Oxford or Larousse, probably

### 5/5 — Has worked seamlessly since purchase some years ago

*2021-05-17*

Does exactly what I need it to well worth the price.

### 4/5 — Collins French Dictionary

*2021-02-09*

Verb tables full of errors. This online dictionary needs a serious review.

### 5/5 — Question

*2020-09-24*

I need to know how to get back to the total dictionary after searching for a verb conjugation. Each time I do that it only searches for verbs and I have to turn my iPad off and restart it. Very frustrating. Thanks.

### 5/5 — Wonderful dictionary

*2020-06-19*

I love this dictionary so much! I have resisted buying a dictionary app for years, but now I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. You have a wealth of definitions at your hand as well as full verb conjugations. You can enter a conjugated verb and it will tell you the verb it’s conjugated from. There have been some words not in here, but so far, very few. Buy this thing; you won’t regret it!

### 5/5 — The best French dictionary app you could buy!

*2020-05-15*

This is honestly the best French-English dictionary app you could buy! Worth every penny and then some. An excellent, very well thought out user interface makes using this app easy and facilitates learning. Tap on any word to go to it’s definition. Tap and hold on any word to speak it’s pronunciation. Tap on any verb to go to it’s conjugation. Multiple usage examples. Easy to use verb conjugation tables. I highly recommend this app.

### 5/5 — THE best French dictionary!

*2020-01-22*

I love everything about this dictionary app, but the thing I love the most is that you can input a conjugated verb and it will give you the infinitive and the meaning. Other dictionaries do not do this and you have to search and search.

So glad I bought this dictionary, merci beaucoup !

### 5/5 — Incorrect translation English to French

*2019-11-20*

I searched “ride” (English) meaning transport, in French. The app gave “wrinkle...” which is the translation of “ride” (French) into English. I tried several other translations from English to French which worked normally. A glitch to correct...

### 4/5 — Invaluable

*2019-11-12*

I’m a French student and I find this app invaluable. Quick to use, and the different examples of contexts for using a word or phrase are really useful, as are verb conjugations. It’s replaced two dictionaries for me.

### 4/5 — Anne

*2018-11-04*

I love this dictionary and have used it to the exclusion of others for years. However, I have recently found one very serious mistake. Perhaps all the reflexive verbs in the negative perfect tense to name but one tense are incorrect. Eg Je ne me suis pas levée is given as je ne me suis levée pas. It is the same with the future perfect. I have checked about 6 verbs and all are the same. For anyone struggling to learn the word orders they would be learning a mistake which would be quite difficult to unlearn. I have looked up several other reflexives and found them all to be the same. Other than that I do rate this dictionary very highly although it now makes me wonder how many other errors there may be.

### 4/5 — Outstanding

*2018-11-02*

I bought all Collins dictionaries in every language and they are the best, however it needs iCloud syncing for favorite words.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Always quit when I try to use pronunciation

*2024-07-14*

This is quite useful, and for 17.00 bucks it’s not cheap either. I purchased an electronic dictionary precisely because I want to hear the word. However, it always quit when I highlight the word and select “speak”. I tried on both my phone and my iPad. Just does not work. Very frustrating.

**Developer response:** Hello, we've fixed the "Speak" bug in version 2.11.1. Please update your app to the latest version. Email us at escalate@ultralingua.com with any questions. Thank you for using Ultralingua!

### 1/5 — I Demand a Refund

*2021-02-09*

I bought this app for the IPA pronunciation, but the character that indicates nasalization (the squiggly Tilda) doesn’t line up with the nasalize vowels, and other times they fall even outside the word.

Do these people understand the meaning of quality control? If not, they can look it up in their own dictionary.

### 1/5 — Great concept, but why so few words...?

*2018-11-22*

The app is great, the concept as well.
But why can we not have the same number of words as in the paper Senior version ?
For this price, we it’s the least we could get.
I’ve tried this version as well as the Collins-Robert. In each case, there’s always some words I cannot find

### 1/5 — Kinda disappointed

*2018-09-15*

Perhaps it is simply user error/lack of technological know-how, but honestly I liked the version of this dictionary on the Internet rather than the app itself, because I have not been able to determine how to find examples of a given word used in different sentences, which was available on the free Internet version.

### 2/5 — This dictionary should be improved. Otherwise, it is useless.

*2025-03-03*

I was expecting a dictionary that has a chart that shows IPA International Phonetic Alphabet, not a link to Wikipedia that is useless. Also I expected the IPA chart can give tips about each symbol such as an equivalent or similar sound in English. Also each word with a recording option where we can say the word and the system could tell us if we are doing the pronunciation right.

### 2/5 — Contenu de l'application est insuffisante

*2017-06-03*

Le contenu de cette application est insuffisante, car pour un prix 50€ c'est excessif surtout que le contenu n'est pas énorme contrairement aux autres dictionnaire anglais-français.

### 3/5 — Not current and too expensive

*2026-03-15*

Lacks many example sentences and definitions that can be found for free on apps like Wiktionary Reader or Motî. Very little contemporary slang within this dictionary.

### 3/5 — Speak feature doesn’t work

*2025-11-29*

The speak feature is broken (again) and the app hasn’t been update in at least a year. Please fix this.

### 3/5 — Dictionnaire Robert

*2023-05-21*

Le plus souvent je trouve une bonne traduction sauf pour les mots un peu ésotériques, j’attendrais mieux d’une dictionnaire comme le Robert.

### 3/5 — New Icon 😕 + iCloud Backup ☁️⁉️

*2018-10-25*

I am generally satisfied by the app, however the favorite words are not saved in iCloud using by the app to be recoverable in different device.

Another issue is the icon of the app, previous icon was not perfect, but at least the languages were indicated on the icon, the new one is just an "A" ugly letter that represents nothing, with a background color ending with an irregular white edges, completely meaningless and a lot less stylish that the previous icon.

Hope the author(s) and developers fix these matters soon, the app is not a low cost app used by non-professionals, therefore it worths highest qualities.

A word of thanks.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Excellent reference

*2026-05-11*

This is an excellent translation app, quick and easy to use. A huge benefit is the conjugation of verbs, absolutely necessary when studying French. When I need historical depth I turn to Le Petit Robert, but this is my day-to-day reference and I use it all the time. I’m grateful to have it.

### 5/5 — Great dictionary and privacy policy

*2026-05-09*

The dictionary works great. It has good search functionality and can also show conjugations. It also has a great privacy policy that shows it doesn’t track any data related to you!

### 5/5 — Works well for beginners

*2026-04-23*

Easy to look-up single words. Getting phrases is nice as well.

I still have a french <-> french dictionary on the side for pronunciation.

If a possibility to search for parts of Phrases is added ( which, to my knowledge is not yet possible ) it would be the definitive choice.

Nice to have a one time payment. Thumbs up to the decision makers 👍

### 5/5 — French Dictionary

*2026-01-26*

I’ve found this to be very helpful and well put-together.

### 5/5 — Very helpful for beginners

*2025-08-22*

I love being able to have a good dictionary on my phone, without needing to have an internet connection (unreliable wifi and/or low signal strength of cell towers). Conjugation is a plus. I have the unabridged Collins, but it is a brick of a book and certainly not practical for use away from home.

### 5/5 — Excellent Dictionary!!

*2023-12-22*

I thoroughly enjoy using this excellent French Language Dictionary!

### 5/5 — Good all-rounder

*2023-06-30*

This is my first port of call as a dictionary & for conjugations. It’s pretty well laid out. I gave it four stars out of five because: 1. Sometimes the English translations lack breadth (then I will go to Oxford-Hachette, DeepL, Linguee, or Bescherelle Synonymes and one of more of the the first three)*. 2. It can sometimes be a bit painful getting back to start a fresh search. * I’m now at CEFR level B1.3 at Alliance Française, so am beginning to approach nuances in in meaning, and broadening my vocabulary.

### 5/5 — Well worth the money

*2022-08-31*

Yes there are a bunch of free translator apps and online dictionaries, and this one is neither free nor cheap, but it’s worth every penny. It’s very easy to use, and the information provided for every word is comprehensive, usually with sentences provided to show how the word works. This is especially useful for figures of speech or word usages that don’t directly translate. For example, you may “practice” piano in English but you “work” piano in French. The listing for practice explains that sort of thing. It also has complete conjugation tables for every verb, which are provided directly after the definition(s). I love this app!

### 5/5 — Good but no audible pronunciation

*2022-08-03*

Great dictionary but the omission of audible pronunciations -- when every cheap dictionary is able to provide it -- is an egregious oversight and a nuisance for the user because they have to go to a second app for this purpose.

### 5/5 — Some things should be fixed but useful.

*2022-04-29*

I believe that the negation forms of « les verbes pronominaux aux passés composés » in the conjugation table are wrong. In my iPad, the history back button does not work. Except for these, the app is really useful. I often refer to it as a French English dictionary.
