I had the blue Collin’s Malay Dictionary back when I lived in Malaysia and it was the best Malay dictionary out there. I’m so glad I found this dictionary app! I love how it shows the translated word and gives you a sentence to show you how it is used.

There are few good and accessible options for BM-English dictionaries. Compared to others, this has quite a comprehensive lexicon and most entries have examples, conjugations, and different parts of speech. The app is brought down by: -constant reminder to rate the app on every launch -search is one way (strictly Eng-BM or BM-Eng) but the search bar swaps from BM back to English too often -some words are only searchable from one language. Eg: search from English for BESERK and MENGAMUK is returned, yet neither MENGAMUK nor AMUK return any entries when searched from BM -not clear what regular expressions are valid in searching, should suggest or include a list to chose from -normally need to explicitly search for root/base form of words even though conjugated forms are included in the entry

This app could be improved with some basic grammar explanations & a key or search feature to help people identify the base word so that they can utilise this dictionary (Eg. To find what the word mengambil means you must look under ambil, to find menulis you must look under tulis). This would make the dictionary a lot more practical for beginner learners to use.

I was hesitating for a long time about paying for this app given the free apps available and google translate. I thought this app would make learning malay much easier but given it doesn’t even have basic functions that one would expect from an electronic dictionary that is very simple to implement it is a great disappointment. For example, if you want to search for a word you need to search for the root word first - this is one of the most difficult things to do for a person who is starting to learn malay as figuring out the root word can be quite tricky. The software should be able to easily link to all the words it has in the dictionary rather than requiring the user to know the root word. Because of this limitation many of the hyperlinks within their example sentences do not work and cannot link to the compound word. And it has many missing compound words such as terawat. In all, a great disappointment considering the cost for the app.

Really enjoy using this dictionary on a daily basis here in Malaysia. It does require awareness of the “root word” and the prefixes and suffixes so it might appear difficult to the novice. But once you’ve learned those Malay basics, this dictionary is amazing as it has lots of clear examples and explanations.

Still not right after frequent updates and changes. When one goes between the dictionary and a book, when one returns to the dictionary, one finds it has reverted from Malay->English to English-> Malay. Also unnecessary ‘bobbing’, on moving from one function to next. It was fine when we bought it 4 years ago. Why the frequent poorly-thought-out updates?
