### 4/5 — Just not enough words

*2026-03-18, version 2.11.1*

This is a reliable dictionary and has IPA pronunciations of every word. It is unfortunately less (maybe much less) comprehensive than the other Collins bilingual dictionaries (German and Spanish anyway).

### 3/5 — Not very good selection of words.

*2025-07-08*

There are many words that the default apple Portuguese-Portuguese dictionary gets but this paid product doesn’t. Like “viúva”

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2024-04-28*

I had high hopes for this dictionary unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. What kind of a dictionary in this day and age doesn’t offer a feature to hear the word’s pronounced? The only way to get this feature is by highlighting the word then scroll to find “speak” option. Very clunky. They should learn from Pleco dictionary app!

### 4/5 — Good, not great

*2023-10-06*

This is dictionary’s better if you speak British English as opposed to American English because terms are different. Also, it oftentimes has the definition of phrases but those only appear if you put in a particular word, e.g. falar; the definition doesn’t appear when searching for the phrase.

### 3/5 — Oops!

*2021-03-12*

I said in my last review that I couldn’t move back from conjugations to the general dictionary. Completely wrong! It is exceptionally good and I can’t fault it

### 4/5 — Brazilian v European Portuguese

*2016-05-23*

Mostly I am enjoying the Portuguese Dictionary. I am roughly at intermediate stage in my acquisition of the language so it is serving my purpose well. Occasionally I find more obscure words are not listed. My main concern is the pronunciation guide and audio. Both draw on the Brazilian system and I am desperate to learn European Portuguese. The pronunciation of European Portuguese is markedly different and very difficult to get right. The ideal would be a facility to switch between the two. I tried to see if there was a separate European one to download but have failed to find such a version.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2015-07-13*

I bought this dictionary because I have used Collins dictionaries for other languages which are excellent. Unfortunately this one was unable to translate 90% of the names of fish on restaurant menus and was poor on other items too. Not as good as a premium product should be

### 4/5 — Great app, with one little issue

*2013-11-08*

This is easily the best Portuguese dictionary app. A lot of care was put into making the interface clean and intuitive.

The only issue is that it's clumsy to close definitions. You open a definition by tapping on the word, but to close you have to click on a little "arrows" button on the other side of the screen. The definitions also stay open forever, so after awhile a bunch of definitions are open. I'd expect them to be closed automatically at some point, like when you open the app.

### 2/5 — Latest version doesn't use up-to-date accents

*2013-06-24*

In 2009, brazilian Portuguese went through some major updates, which include taking the dots off words with ü. Astoundingly, this dictionary has the OLD versions of words, despite having been recently updated. I find the new update more stable than the last version, but it's actually quite confusing to navigate. I also feel that the explanations have become shorter & that there are key English words missing, which then do appear when the Portuguese word is entered. E.g. 'To distance (oneself) - afastar-se. Afastar-se is only given if you search the English 'to remove' but there is no option to search 'to distance', even though this is given as an English translation when you search 'afastar-se'.

### 2/5 — Not a good value for the money

*2013-02-26*

I have been using Spanish version of this dictionary for couple of years, and have been happy. However, the Portuguese version is very limited, crashes often, need to reboot phone frequently to make it work, and it is not a good value for the money. Don't buy it until they fix it.

### 2/5 — All of sudden!

*2013-02-17*

Fantastic app, but now I'm having the same difficulties mentioned above! I try to type a word and the whole app crashes?! Please help!!

### 4/5 — Good app

*2012-05-31*

An expensive app (at more than £20), but well worth the money - except briefly while there was a bug that crashed my 3Gs. Hats off to the programmers for fixing it reasonably promptly (31 May '12).

### 2/5 — Use to be a good dictionary but now i cant use it! It always have problems and turn off

*2012-05-21*

Antes era um bom aplicativo, mas agora esta sempre com problemas e desligando sozinho. Paguei 30 dollars e nao o uso mais.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — lacks advertised functionality

*2024-09-26*

there is currently no icloud sync. both the bookshelf and individual collins dictionaries by the same developer advertise syncing favorites and transferring them to other devices but this function is broken which, for an app with this price tag, is unacceptable. the developer responded to an email inquiry letting me know that they are aware and have no timeline as to when a fix can be expected. i have many favorites in an individual dictionary app and after buying another one of their expensive dictionaries i am unable to use them both in the bookshelf app because there is no way of transferring all the favorites. the favorites also don’t sync between the iphone and ipad versions of the dictionary or bookshelf apps. the developer either needs to provide a fix, which honestly is not that serious of a coding job, or update the store description before people spend $18 for each of their dictionaries expecting the advertised features.

### 1/5 — Speech doesn’t work

*2024-07-08*

App crashes when trying to use the speak function. Waste of $20

### 1/5 — Poderia ser mais completo!

*2019-01-31*

Acabo de baixar o dicionário pra ter uma versão off line disponível e, nos primeiros 10 minutos de uso, precisei consultar 3 palavras que não existem no dicionário: to hone / proclivity / havoc ....
Puxa... me arrendi da compra !
:(
Gostaria de ter feito uma pesquisa melhor a respeito do aplicativo e, ter escolhido uma opção mais completa e melhor.

### 1/5 — Waste of $18 for European Port

*2018-09-10*

This dictionary gives only the Brazilian pronunciation of words. So if you want to learn European Portuguese, this is useless. They could very easily include both IPAs for Brazilian and European Portuguese. Until this happens, it’s 1 star for me.

### 1/5 — Unsatisfied

*2018-05-27*

No sound, some words can't be found, like "nós", it seems can't connect to internet.

### 1/5 — App keeps shutting down after recent update

*2013-10-22*

It keeps shutting down after installing the recent update. It shuts down immediately upon clicking on the app- I cannot use it at all now.

### 1/5 — Muito caro

*2013-06-09*

Muito caro e incompleto. Muito investimento para o conteúdo q apresenta. Michaellis é mais barato e melhor, mas infelizmente ainda não há um dicionário realmente bom e completo nos apps pra iPhone e iPads. Continuamos a ser 3o. 4o. ou 5o mundo!

### 1/5 — Do not buy!

*2013-02-15*

This App is complete garbage, it's definitely not worth the price. This is by far one of the worst purchases I have ever made: I'm incredibly frustrated at myself for purchasing it. Not only is it limited by its capabilities but it also freezes frequently.

### 1/5 — Melhorar

*2013-02-08*

Tem q ser melhoria
Nao posso usar. Nao ta funcionando nada.

### 1/5 — Update crashes on 3GS-want a fix or refund

*2012-05-21*

I was very happy with this excellent dictionary until the recent update. Now the app crashes every time I try to type a word search. Collins, please fix this and post a new update that works on 3GS as I have paid alot of money for this app.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — It takes time to appreciate this...

*2021-02-24*

As someone who has been living in Brazil for a number of years now, I have learned to appreciate this app. Yes, it’s relatively expensive, and yes, there are alternatives out there, for sure, but they are mostly dependent on internet connectivity and very often lacking. This is a standalone with all the features included. The conjugation explanations are often limited, but I’ve discerned the reasoning behind the omissions: the uncommon usage of such verbs and their conjugations. Moreover, most of the conjugations in Brazilian grammar are for literary purposes. If you are studying the language, as a foreigner, to completely master it like a highly educated native, then you are going to need a lot more than an app. Even most Brazilians don’t know all the conjugations, just like most English speakers cannot explain most of the english grammar rules. This app is for someone who plans to live in Brazil for a long time, as it is (IMO) a VERY good, and well thought-out reference application. And btw, it is linked to the internal ios Portuguese-English dictionary, which makes it a full dictionary in addition to a conjugator. I use this app EVERY day and my return on investmemt has been 100 percent!

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2015-01-20*

Excellent, especially with the conjugations. I use it all the time.

### 5/5 — Initially Unhappy with Update but Now I'd Kiss the Developer

*2013-07-24*

I work in Brasil & have been using this dictionary for over a year now & found it to be indispensable before the update.

I was a bit jarred by the completely new user interface & then I clicked on a verb to conjugate & found that the developers have added an extremely important element for verb conjugation which is missing in EVERY single book (including 501 Portuguese verbs.)

This dictionary now includes Portuguese & English conjugations side by side for most of the verb forms in the dictionary!

Now you don't need to know the meaning of preterit, mais que perfeto, subjunctivo, etc.

This makes your learning experience a ton easier!

Compared to most iPhone/iPad apps this app is expensive; but if you need to learn Brasilian Portuguese, don't be a cheapskate & cough up the dough!!!

You only pay once & you can use it on both the iPhone & iPad...

### 5/5 — Excelente

*2013-06-25*

Prático e completo! Recomendo!

### 5/5 — Good dictionary

*2013-05-31*

I like it. The updates are good too. Uso o dicionário português.

### 5/5 — Very useful & great aid for learning

*2012-05-09*

The verb conjugation aspect of the app is great, especially if you have never learned a foreign language before with the need to conjugate verbs.

### 5/5 — Worth the money!

*2011-11-30, version 1.4.3*

It is $30 but absolutely worth it. It works fast, you can switch between the languages with a little button at the top and it's easy to use.

I also hate the idea of paying $30 for an app (I bought the Spanish and French ones too), but it'll be worth it to brush up on my languages on the go, or to translate things I don't quite know the meaning of.

You can try the other cheaper apps, but I just went straight to the brand I trust the best, rather than wasting money on lower-end dictionaries. I hate wasting money.

### 5/5 — I love these dictionaries!!!!

*2011-08-21*

Well...I study Romance Languages, Spanish(my first language) Italian (2 yrs. of it) and I am about to start French and Portuguese, I own Collins Spanish and Italian pro, and I just bought this one for French and for Portuguese... I am confident that It won't let me down.....especially since such an old company is behind these apps. it beats carrying a dictionary with you which does not conjugate verbs and does not write numbers for you... BUYT IT!!! It's worth every penny...! [UPDATE] I e-mailed the developers before buying this app...I wanted to know if this app, was for European Portuguese or Brazilian...they said in their reply that it was both.

### 5/5 — Well worth the price

*2011-07-08*

I was hesitant to buy an app priced so much higher than other dictionaries but I have gotten my money's worth MANY times over studying portuguese in Brazil. When you need to find a word there is no fumbling around - you have it instantly. The conjugations are also extemely valuable to students of the language. Very rarely are words missing from the dictionary - although notably missing different cuts of meat! It's quite complete, but it is not really a phrasebook. Buy this if you live in Brazil (well, you'll be happy until your iphone is stolen) or serious about learning. Do not buy if you are a tourist!

Suggestions for the developer: switching back and forth between the dictionary and conjugations is so cumbersome and awkward! It is almost like two seperate programs. Why not make this more seamless?

### 5/5 — Great investment

*2011-02-27*

You really can't go wrong with Ultralingua dictionaries. It has everything: pronunciation guide, conjugations for every verb in every tense, number feature, great and precise definitions, plus useful sample sentences. I don't think there's a better Portuguese dictionary in the store. It's a great investment for your future whether you travel to Brazil, Portugal, or other Portuguese speaking countries. For business, cultural enrichment, or if you have a Portuguese speaking friend, nothing can be more helpful in getting to know Brazil than learning the language. This dictionary is an indispensable tool to achieve that.
