Williamsburg was founded in 1632. Originally named Middle Plantation, Royal Governor Francis Nicholson changed its name to Williamsburg in honor of King William III. The nation’s second oldest College was established here in 1693, the College of William and Mary, which became America’s first University in 1779 with the first law school. Williamsburg became the capital of Virginia in 1699 after the capital building in Jamestown burned down in 1698. It served as the capital of the Virginia Colony and cultural and social center of the wealthiest and largest colony until 1780, when the capital moved to Richmond. Under the leadership of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, Patrick Henry and James Madison, Williamsburg was a center of political activity in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Today you will experience Colonial Williamsburg, a living history museum that includes hundreds of houses, structures, and outbuildings. 88 are original. Outbuildings such as smokehouses, privies and kitchens have been faithfully reproduced, and the original buildings were restored to show how they would have looked during the eighteenth century. Many buildings are open as museums, while others are used to demonstrate period trades such as the wheelwright's shop, printing shop, gunsmith and wigmaker's establishment. Some buildings are also used as stores, where visitors can purchase items that were created by historic tradespeople at Colonial Williamsburg. They continue to bill you each week and still trying to receive a refund. The app was difficult to navigate, not worth purchasing. ### 1/5 — Warning — Subscription Required *2021-05-31, version 3.0* This app used to have a minimal one time cost to it or perhaps it was even free. It was awesome a few years ago as the ratings from then say. More recently however someone decided to milk the app for all they could. You have to sign up for a subscription at $4.99 a week that renews automatically. You get the information for a brief time only, which is alright if you just want to look at the info while you spend a few days in CW. However you have to pay through the nose if you want to look at the information later at your own leisure. Just buy a book in the gift shop first. ### 5/5 — A wealth of information *2021-02-20, version 3.0* At first this app did take quite a while to download, and the first few times I tried to open it, it seemed to have to download everything each time. So I was afraid the other reviewers were right about it not working. However, that stopped after a few times and now it opens rather quickly. The amount of information on each building is great! Especially since I visited during COVID and most of the buildings are closed. It tells you what each building is, whether it’s original or reconstructed, who owned the buildings, what the building was used for and other historical information, even places where Washington mentioned in his diaries he visited. There are also videos for some of the buildings which was especially nice for the ones I wasn’t able to go into. Several days after being back from Williamsburg I am still reviewing this info and getting a better and better understanding of the town and life during the colonial period. This is a great app if you give it a chance. ### 1/5 — It freezes *2019-12-27, version 3.0* I have not been able to use it. It just won’t open, saying there has been an error and prompting me to try another time. ### 1/5 — Junket *2019-10-16, version 3.0* I just downloaded this and I am getting the same junket message. ### 1/5 — Don’t buy *2019-10-12, version 3.0* Even after 2 days with WiFi it never would load. Could never open. ### 1/5 — Downloaded and that was as far as I got *2019-09-23, version 3.0* Downloaded this app 3 days ago and then the Junket appeared...that is as far as I got. Not of much use if I can’t get past this point. ### 5/5 — Complete and Immersive Tour *2018-03-02, version 2.2.5* This tour was really helpful before getting to colonial williamsburg and while there. Each location has audio narration and images, and sometimes video. It's the best guide to the area and is easy to use- relevant to your location and lets you search by name, or can scroll through the list. If you're going to CW or just curious, get this app! ### 4/5 — Entire app downloaded in less than 5 seconds. *2017-06-22, version 2.2.5* No idea what cell carrier the other reviewer was using but mine downloaded very quickly. ### 1/5 — Beware huge download *2016-07-09, version 2.2.5* This app has such a huge download to do after installation that it never finished before we had to leave Williamsburg.
