The paint mixing is pretty awesome too, especially seeing watercolors being added. The dilution amount is so awesome too. It’s seriously a really good app, However, yes, it’s free to use, but to use all of the features you have to pay for a subscription, which is fine; however, I think it’s quite expensive. $6.99 per month or $34.99 yearly; it’s just to experience. I would be okay paying like $2.99 per month, or paying 20 dollars for the full app. You can still do a lot without the subscription, so I'd still recommend it and give it 5 stars; it’s just that the subscription is pricey ### 5/5 — Great app *2026-06-30, version 2.0.8* I love this app, it has everything I was looking for! ### 5/5 — Spectacular *2026-06-29* This has taken me further in making things ‘click’ in my head than any other app or training session. The pallet finding in the mixing recipes to find the appropriate color you need is something that I now can’t live without. And good idea for the for the Lucida pass-through! ### 5/5 — Just What I Need *2026-04-25* My main learning focus right now is color mixing with oils. What i most appreciate with Color Study is that i can choose my starting palette using my preferred primaries and favorites. The other thing i like is that there are 2 or 3 options for mixing, accurate, simple and sometimes a 3rd. So i can set up my basic palette colors then when i choose a color in my reference image there is consistency with the generated mixes because i chose the base colors and the suggested mixes have so far been pretty accurate. I also appreciate the app will reload the reference image with all my color selections after closing the app or the image. I love that! Just keep going with the updates and whatever. It is a solid app for its essential simplicity. There are many more tools for me to appreciate in this app over time. Immediately takes the headache out of mixing colors. Love that I can create my own palettes. Every feature is incredible. I only wish I could name palettes, and although the paints are incredibly thorough, I have a few on my shelf that aren’t included in the app (I use gamblin oil paints). Neither of these are dealbreakers and couldn’t possibly sway me from using this app! I’m already a loyal customer. Thank you!! **Developer response:** Thanks so much for the review and kind words! Let us try it and appreciate its usefulness. I don’t want to sign up for a free trial let me try even some basic things before we commit to buying it. ### 1/5 — No options for to refuse tracking *2026-03-07, version 1.7.2* The app claims that the following page would show options for tracking and then shows no such page. ### 2/5 — Could be good but needs refining. *2026-06-09* Some good features but there is one underlying problem with this app. I have a fixed palette and have spent a lot of money developing it I don’t want to be recommended lots of different paints rather I want to mix the colours using what I already have. Also colour name is less important than the pigment number …. 2 paints with the same name can be made using different pigment and handle very differently. **Developer response:** Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. The app is intended to generate recipes using the paints in your selected palette, and each paint in the palette editor should include pigment information where available. Below the recipe, you may also see optional paint suggestions that could help achieve a closer mix, but those can be turned off by selecting “Don’t suggest paints.” It sounds like something may not be working as expected, or could be clearer. If you don’t mind contacting me at support@brushlabsllc.com, I’d really like to understand what you’re seeing so I can improve things. ### 2/5 — Color match was not even close to accurate *2026-03-19, version 2.0.0* The color match/mix feature was the main reason I wanted the app. It was not accurate. I will be canceling. ### 3/5 — Mixed feelings - not geared towards watercolors *2026-06-17* This is a great app for understanding composition, values and basic drawing of a reference photo. I am a watercolor artist and would absolutely love this if I could build my palettes based on the pigments I have. Most of the mixes require white to be added which is not generally used in watercolor. **Developer response:** Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. I’m glad the app has been useful for understanding values and composition. You make a very good point about the app not currently having a dedicated watercolor mode, in which lighter values would be achieved through dilution and the white of the paper. This is helpful feedback, and I'll keep it in mind for future updates. ### 3/5 — Watercolour? *2026-02-17* Some aspects of this app are truly brilliant but the recommended mixes don’t work for watercolours as they add eg 80%titanium white or a black which is inappropriate for watercolour. Contacted the team but had no reply. Lots of great features though. **Developer response:** Thank you for the thoughtful review and for highlighting both the strengths and the watercolor limitations. You’re absolutely right that watercolor behaves very differently from opaque media like acrylic and oil, and transparent mixing is much harder to predict accurately. Ich programmiere selber kleine Apps und male Nebenberuflich mit Öl-Farbe. Ich dachte mir bei jedem Schritt einfach nur Wow genau das hat die App noch gebraucht. Einfach, intuitiv super erklärt eine Auswahl aus allen Farben. Eigene Paletten die man erstellen kann da ich hauptsächlich mit Zorn Palette male.
