HOW IT MEASURES The camera continuously estimates the colour of the light falling on a scene — that is how it decides white balance in the first place. This app reads that estimate directly, so the number reflects the LIGHT, not the colour of whatever happens to be in frame. Point it at a room and it reports the room's light; a wooden table no longer drags the reading warm. Until now the app took a photo and worked out the colour temperature from the pixels in the middle of the frame. That had two problems. It measured whatever surface you were pointing at rather than the light falling on it — aim at a wooden table and the reading went warm because the table is warm. And the camera's automatic white balance had already neutralised much of the colour cast before the app ever saw those pixels, so a tungsten bulb read cooler than it really is. The app now reads the camera's own estimate of the light instead. Your iPhone works this out continuously — it has to, in order to set white balance at all — and it is based on the illumination rather than the subject. The number settles faster, holds steadier, and no longer changes because you moved the crosshair onto something a different colour. Also in this update: • If you calibrated before, please reset it. The old instructions told you to calibrate under the light you wanted to measure, which was exactly backwards: doing that defined that light as neutral daylight.
