## What is Colossal Cave 3D?

Colossal Cave is a classic, cozy 3D Adventure. Slow down, explore a massive magical, labyrinthine cave system, all while solving clever, sprawling puzzles at your own pace. Auto-magic maps, limited inventory, treasure search, all the fantastic creatures and a deep mystery at the heart of the experience.

 > COZY CAVE ADVENTURE

First-person POV with classic point-&-click style controls: walk, look, interact, and test your theories. Limited inventory requires clever management in its own right. A magical series of maps quietly and automatically tracks where you’ve been, even marking where you’ve dropped items.

Simply focus on strategy and exploration, instead of wrestling with navigation.

 > CHILL VIBES, CLEVER MYSTERY

This is not a frantic action game; no frenetic timers shouting at you, no combo meters to maintain... just you, your lamp, and a series of intertwined, sprawling, twisty corridors full of brainy, logic-driven challenges.

Take your time:

 • Try weird solutions. Take notes. Trial and error can be your friend.
 • Double back to old rooms with new ideas and unlock potential new discoveries.
 • Follow that “what if I…?” inclination and see what the cave gives back to you.

 > CREATURES, TREASURE & STRANGE MAGIC

The cave is quiet, but not without your footsteps.

You’ll bump into:

 • Mischievous dwarves with sharp daggers and sharper tempers.
 • A demanding, grumpy troll guarding a rickety bridge.
 • A noticeably absent giant. Did you notice that?
 • Flickering hinkypunks and other odd cave-dwellers. A handsome pirate, perhaps?
 • Hidden treasures, strange artifacts, and places that feel just a little too magical to be real.

Some encounters are charming, whilst others are just dangerous enough to keep you on your toes... but it all stays firmly in “casual mystical adventure,” not horror. Just fantasy with a slice of mystery.

That said, all good Adventures suggest one should save early, save often.

 > RETRO-COOL, PLAY IT YOUR WAY

Colossal Cave 3D leans into that old-school Adventure game atmosphere: colorful environments, shadowy silhouettes, bats, and a focus on exploring the world for clues rather than being led around by the nose.

There is plenty of customization allowing you to structure your vibe with a variety of options, including comfort tweaks and settings. Reverse direction, or nuke the narrator. It's all there for you. Play exactly how you like... curled up with the game on a couch, in a car, on a bus, on the plane... slowly exploring through the cave one mystical passage at a time.

 > FEATURES

 • Relaxed, point-&-click style exploration in a fantastical cave
 • Limited inventory that makes item choices and puzzle routes consequential
 • Handy auto-map that shows where you’ve been and where you've dropped items
 • A cast of dwarves, elves, whisps, a dragon, and other quirky cave creatures
 • Plenty of strategic puzzles with satisfying “aha!” moments
 • Retro-cool adventure vibes inspired by classic games
 • Flexible customization options so you can make the adventure as cozy and enjoyable as you want
 • The mythic, mellow cavecation!

Venture down into Colossal Cave, follow your curiosity, and see how far your lamp... and your wits... can take you.

### 2/5 — Ugh...

*2025-11-02, version 1.2.30024*

This game COULD have been great but the controls are an absolute dumpster fire. You're supposed to walk about and explore, but you cant walk backwards... so anytime you get to a point where you cant move forward anymore you need to turn a full 360 degrees unless you wanna just sit there, stuck. God forbid you need to look at something from a different angle or simply move back a step or two. Its a truly maddening experience. In a 3D first person game this is simply unacceptable. The entire interface as a whole is a pain to use, and so is attempting to look up, down, left, right... ANY direction... ugh. Its just awful.

### 1/5 — Horrible!

*2025-04-05, version 1.2.30024*

Complete waste of money. Do not buy! Works horribly on an iPad.

### 1/5 — Nothing

*2025-03-23, version 1.2.30024*

Game loaded. Went through several “ please wait “ screens, then as I waited for game to start, the game went away. Twice. Removed game. I’m done

### 2/5 — Just being honest

*2025-02-10, version 1.2.30024*

Might be a great game who knows? For me it’s a hard pass when the devs want 10$ and the amount of gameplay offered in the demo takes me literally about a minute to finish. There was a nice “history of our game” to view and I’ll admit at first it seemed like it was going to be decent adventure game but then I realized it took more time to download the app than it was gonna take me to finish this supposed “demo”

### 5/5 — My first game purchase, now my latest!

*2024-08-25*

I first bought Colossal Cave on my then brand new Apple ][+. I spent countless hours playing it.

When I heard a graphical version by the Williams folks was out, I had to get it!

It is a lot of fun, be sure to check out the TV :)

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2024-08-19*

The PC version was ok, but this is bad. Instruction screen with writing chopped off on all 4 edges. Painfully slow 3D view panning. Clunky interface.

### 5/5 — Almost Myst like!!

*2024-05-16, version 1.2.23484*

This game was amazing!! This genre of games are what a lot of people are looking for! It’s been the first of its kind for years!! I bought an iPad for specific games like this over 10 years ago, but slowly they just stopped making them.

I have to admit, without the walkthrough I was clueless, as in playing a totally different game. I explored (which I love to do) the lower caves all the way up to a futuristic area, that seemed so different from the caves. But what do I know?!?! When using the walkthrough, the game was different from what I had been exploring and would have never come to the conclusion as to the real game. But it was fun just exploring!! What’s funny, is all the places I had been to, very few were part of the game!

Was not crazy about it being a point system. The main concern I have is that you can die and have to start over, so save your game ….OFTEN!!

I rate games, but never a review, so this tells other gamers, this game was a 10 out of 10 for me! Worth the price!! Please make more of these! Always looking for non linear, NO violence, (including dying) adventure/exploration games. Thank you developers!!

### 5/5 — What a blast from the past

*2024-02-27, version 1.2.23484*

I started following this amazing couple for their exploits outside the gaming world and that led me to Ken’s revelation about Colossal Cave 2.0!

I had played Advent back in the day on a PDP 8 and lost a ton of productivity the fall of ‘78 … and again on my Apple Lisa a few years later, so had to try this version. It does not disappoint!!!!
Having achieved 350 all those years ago, it’s nice to just explore and enjoy all the nuisances in this iOS 2.0 version. The graphics are great and the sounds are even better! I have never been tempted to go down the VR journey …. but I will now (dang it, but 🎉 at the same time).

Special shout out to Roberta for the video about the Crothers and the history of the game itself. I loved those details as much as I love the warmth of bunny slippers on a chilly nautical morning 😉 Thank you, thank you! Ten thumbs up from me 👍🏼

### 5/5 — Great throwback!

*2023-12-06, version 1.2.23484*

Very fun to play a old school, slower paced game where I can ponder all day on how to solve the next
Puzzle!

### 5/5 — Great Puzzle game!!

*2023-12-05, version 1.2.23484*

Love this game thus far can't wait to really get into it!! By far one of the best out right now for sure!!
