### 1/5 — Subscription service

*2026-06-26, version 2.6.7*

Can’t play without paying monthly. Used to love this game and Halfbrick studios, sad to see their downfall.

### 1/5 — Don’t download if you want to play for free

*2026-06-18, version 2.6.7*

You have to have a subscription to play the game, simple as that. They need to make it an option to purchase the game at least.

### 1/5 — Used to be good

*2026-06-17, version 2.6.7*

No need for a subscription to this

### 1/5 — I’m good thanks

*2026-06-16, version 2.6.7*

Y’all gotta fire whoever made that subscription change, fire the people who agreed with it too.

### 3/5 — Subscription needed

*2026-06-06, version 2.6.7*

I loved this game. I played the entirety of it and had a blast doing so. The only thing that sucks is there’s not that many levels and you need a subscription to play. You download the game for free but once you open it there’s no way to play without paying. You can easily beat the game with the 30 day free trial but still. Unnecessarily charging people to play

### 1/5 — Why

*2026-06-03, version 2.6.7*

When I was a kid I loved this game now I got to play it for 30 min then it got locked behind a pay wall.

### 2/5 — Paying to play

*2026-06-01, version 2.6.7*

I don’t know whose idea it was but having to play a game that was once free is short of nothing but greedy I don’t what on earth would possess someone to do that. To bad used to be my favourite game definitely not anymore

### 1/5 — WHY SUBSCRIPTION???

*2026-05-27, version 2.6.7*

Why is there a paid subscription to play a mobile game that was free over a decade ago...?

### 1/5 — Money hungry

*2026-05-25, version 2.6.7*

This game used to be free but now it cost money how lame

### 1/5 — Subscription required to play

*2026-05-15, version 2.6.7*

I loved this game back before the whole “pay a subscription to play our game” thing. Seriously, if it was just $5 for the game itself, i’d happily pay that. But no, halfbrick got so greedy they just had to make it a subscription-based service.

### 1/5 — Greed is the root of evil

*2026-05-15, version 2.6.7*

I hate.

You need a subscription to play the game

### 1/5 — There were better ways

*2026-05-14, version 2.6.7*

This is one of the worst monetization decisions I’ve ever seen in mobile gaming.

Halfbrick built its reputation on fun, simple, highly polished games like Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride, and Colossatron. These were games that millions of people grew up playing. They were either free with ads or available as inexpensive one-time purchases. That model was fair, accessible, and made sense.

Now, many of these older games are locked behind a subscription service.

The biggest problem is that this subscription does not offer enough value to justify a recurring fee. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Ubisoft+ provide access to hundreds of modern games, online features, and constant new releases. Halfbrick+ is asking players to pay every month for a relatively small catalog of mostly older mobile games.

Many players would gladly accept one of these alternatives:

Free with ads

A one-time purchase to unlock the full game

An optional subscription for people who want access to the entire catalog

Instead, the only option for some titles is to subscribe.

That is why this decision feels less like a customer-focused business model and more like a cash grab.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a company making money. Developers deserve to be paid, and successful studios need revenue to continue operating. The issue is when a pricing model appears designed to maximize recurring payments while offering limited additional value to the customer.

Locking classic games behind a monthly fee creates the impression that the company is prioritizing predictable subscription revenue over consumer choice and long-term goodwill.

That feels especially frustrating for longtime fans who remember playing these games years ago. Nostalgia should not be turned into a monthly bill.

The negative reviews on the App Store suggest that many players feel the same way. People are not upset because they expect games to be free forever. They are upset because there were much more consumer-friendly ways to monetize these games.

A simple one-time purchase option would likely have been far better received. Many fans would happily pay a few dollars to permanently own Colossatron or other classic titles.

Halfbrick made some of the best mobile games of their era, but this pricing model undermines the goodwill they built over many years.

A better approach would be:

Free versions with ads

One-time purchase options

Halfbrick+ as an optional subscription, not the only way to play

That model would still generate revenue while giving players flexibility and preserving trust.

Until then, I can’t recommend paying a monthly subscription to access games that were once free or inexpensive and are now locked behind a recurring fee.

### 1/5 — Remove advertisement from the game

*2026-05-08*

It was one of the favourite game of mine from my childhood, but now it has just become a promotion app or advertisement app. They just want people to pay for subscription

### 1/5 — Come on man

*2026-05-05, version 2.6.7*

Ugh, this was my favorite game, still is, but Halfbrick decided that they need money I dont have. Like, make it a pay once and you’re done thing, they even had ads in it!!! Just keep the damn ads, they were spaced far enough apart I didn’t mind it, but a subscription??? Come on!! I’m a teenager for Colossatron’s sake, I don’t have money!!!

### 2/5 — Why?

*2026-05-01, version 2.6.7*

You are just discouraging people from playing their are better ways to make profit than this

### 2/5 — 17年没有任何广告

*2026-04-22, version 2.6.7*

现在广告满天，我还充了钱都不行

### 1/5 — Paywall?

*2026-04-17, version 2.6.7*

I bought this game back when I had an iPhone 5. It disappeared from my library when I paid money for it. Now that it’s back, I have to pay $30/yr? This world is an ad/micro-transaction dystopia hellscape.

### 1/5 — I’m crying rn

*2026-04-16, version 2.6.7*

This used to be my favorite game when I was younger, but now it’s locked behind a paywall? And not to mention that the second game is just another galaga ripoff. Halfbrick, Get. It. Together. Please.

### 1/5 — Assinatura

*2026-04-14*

Paguei dinheiro nesse jogo e eles bloqueia colocando que eu só posso jogar por 30 minutos. Detalhe eu paguei pelo jogo inteiro não só por 30 minutos.

### 2/5 — I’m saddened

*2026-04-12, version 2.6.7*

I love this game but now having to pay to play this game is so sad. I could maybe see buying the subscription if you had more games, but now I’m just done here. If there were ads between levels like in jet pack joyride, or a paid license to remove ads like in Dan the man, I would love, and play this game again, like I used to

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Waste of money

*2026-08-20, version 2.6.7*

Needs a subscription to play. Simply not fun enough to warrant paying per month. This subscription based model for gaming is ridiculous and if we all collectively don’t pay, then the company gets to die like it should.

### 1/5 — Consider alternatives

*2026-08-14, version 2.6.7*

Another game I paid for has become a subscription leech, rather than complain, I would recommend a few similarly priced games which provide similar or better entertainment value. Downwell is pretty good, it’s like $2. Poinpy is pay what you want, also really good. Scourge Bringer, like three bucks; fantastic game. That’s off the top of my head. Those games are apparently profitable enough to persist on the app store without requiring a subscription or
micro-transactions. See what you think.

### 1/5 — An amazing free game now locked behind a paywall

*2026-07-21, version 2.6.7*

I used to play this game whenever I was either bored or sad. But seeing how it’s now locked behind a depressing Paywall shows that they only care about themselves and not the people. Review bomb the game and demand the game to be fully playable and not locked behind a paywall!

### 1/5 — I don’t want the subscription

*2026-07-12, version 2.6.7*

I don’t have much money to deal with your shenanigans stop sending me a subscription pay wall

### 1/5 — Not worth the price

*2026-07-06, version 2.6.7*

This game was only 1 dollar at launch, and has been that way for over a decade. For only one dollar, it was amazing, more than worth it, I bought it and I’d play it all the time. But now, you’re forced to subscribe to Halfbrick+ (more like Half-Baked Pus), which is a monthly paid service. Colossatron has not received any content updates in YEARS, and now Halfbrick is asking for monthly payment to play it. At this point, just get an emulator and pirate an older version, the ONLY thing you’d be missing out on is being nickel-and-dimed by a greedy company.

### 1/5 — Enserio?

*2026-07-04, version 2.6.7*

Pagar una suscripción por un juego de celular ?

### 1/5 — Disgusting Subscription

*2026-07-02, version 2.6.7*

I had this amazing game downloaded on my phone 12 years ago. Why on earth do I have to pay a subscription to pay it now? Actually disgusting.

### 1/5 — Subscription based game now?

*2026-07-01, version 2.6.7*

I paid for the original version of the game and was super sad when I couldn’t find it again after awhile. When it came back for a straight two weeks I played the game almost nonstop before getting told to pay a subscription. I already bought the game once why should I have to pay a monthly fee to keep playing?

### 1/5 — Yal deserve to lose your jobs

*2026-06-28, version 2.6.7*

Locking an old mobile game under a paywall 😂

### 1/5 — Once made memories

*2026-06-28, version 2.6.7*

This game used to be so fun, i played it when it came out. Now i come back to play only to realize that i cant play without a subscription. This just makes the game unplayable and it makes you spend more money than its actually worth. It makes me sad to see this company go down this road, making classic games unplayable

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — 5 stars so this would be up here DO NOT DOWNLOAD

*2026-03-08, version 2.6.7*

This game forces you to pay a subscription fee if you want to play the whole game. This company is becoming too greedy.

### 5/5 — 10/10

*2025-11-09, version 2.6.7*

The boss fights are so epic. It is probably one of the best games ever if you say otherwise then you don’t know what a game is.

### 5/5 — Fun game

*2025-06-15, version 2.6.7*

Great game, very entertaining game, I don’t care that I need a subscription too play

### 5/5 — Amazing Game!

*2025-04-22, version 2.6.7*

The game is like ten years plus old and is still just as fun as day one!

### 5/5 — Крутая игра

*2025-04-17*

Она очень мне понравилась.

### 5/5 — My favorite game as a child, ruined by a paywall

*2025-04-15, version 2.6.7*

This game is not worth a fricking subscription, what the heck?? It’s a little kids game, I just wanted to play it for the nostalgia… what kid is going to pay a subscription to play this?? You’re dirty for this one halfbrick

### 5/5 — Colossatron

*2025-04-04, version 2.6.7*

Really love the game until half brick got it and you have to pay to play it now

### 5/5 — Please read

*2025-03-08, version 2.6.7*

Today, when I was going on the game, it just went onto a membership or something. When I said No Thank you it just went on anyway. I do NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT want to do it but I’m stuck on that page

Please fix 🙏

### 5/5 — Great game

*2025-02-15*

This game has been one that I loved for a long time and was very upset when it was removed. I prestiged 10 times, this last time when it was re-released. I love this game. It's very simple, has customizable weapons which are amazing, great graphics for the kind of game, and I love the "world threat, bad guy" aspect.

With all of that said...This is a simple game which kids can understand and play, and Halfbrick made a mistake by making it a paid subscription only. What used to be a good, FREE game is now being sold as part of a subscription service, like every other corrupt company has been doing. Even Apple has stolen free games and forced you to pay for a subscription service as well. Why? Why would you ruin something good like that? You had something good and crapped on it. I'd rather you sell the game to someone who would upgrade it, add some new features, something. But now you're charging for it and probably won't add anything. Disappointing.

### 5/5 — Great game but not worth the money

*2024-10-09*

I played this game as a child so it’s very nostalgic to me, after getting to play it one last time I can say it’s as I remember, extremely fun and engaging…… however, it wants me to do a membership, 1.99 a month, it really isn’t that much but I’m still not gonna pay it simply due to the fact originally the game was free to play, it has a short campaign from what I remember, and I’d likely forget to stop the membership resulting in money slowly being drained which I don’t want to happen, but getting a 60 minute (or 30 I don’t remember) window to play this game one last time and relive my childhood was amazing and this is a game I will likely never forget
