This requires the app to enable the background mode location for the app to be able to get the current user’s location while the app is in background. The app will only enable the allowsBackgroundLocationUpdates if ANY of the following is meet: *The app is connected to any VBUS device (Bluetooth LE peripheral) *The user’s current status is “Driving” Other than the above mentioned cases the app will automatically disable allowsBackgroundLocationUpdates. The requirements around obtaining real-time GPS position location are specified in FMCSA's 395.20. The pdf for the regulations can be found on https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/hours-service/elds/electronic-logging-devices-and-hours-service-supporting-documents. In FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)'s requirements they specify that we have to continuously monitor GPS positions. If we don't receive a GPS position at least once every five miles that the vehicle moves then we have to log an ELD diagnostic and to start monitoring the time periods without a gps position over a 24 hour period. When this time period exceeds 30 minutes we are required to issue a malfunction and put the ELD out of service. These requirements are specified at about p. 400 or so in the requirements. The FMCSA has strong driver privacy provisions.
