Educational and fun!

### 5/5 — Fun app

*2013-07-31, version 1.6.2*

Friends always comment when I post birthday wishes on FB. Fun to hear reactions.

### 5/5 — A daily visit for me

*2013-04-06*

This is great to follow and see your favorite composer or an unknown composer show up on their birthday. Also, you always get a little history about each.

### 5/5 — Useful app

*2013-04-01, version 1.6.2*

Good for expanding your knowledge beyond "the usual suspects" of classical music.

### 4/5 — Composer

*2013-03-22*

.

### 5/5 — Musical history daily

*2013-03-19*

Can we bring more contemporary composers into the fold? Always useful bits of musical biographies

### 5/5 — Get to know a new composer daily

*2013-03-19*

This is a great, small footprint (a few kb's), app. Every so often you'll come across a composer you haven't heard about or you meant to research a little bit more about. An iTunes link transfers to the composers work where you can listen previews and broaden your horizon. Thanks for this informative app.

### 5/5 — Great resource for educators

*2013-03-12*

I love this app in my music classroom. It is a simple yet effective way to introduce a ton of composers (both well known and obscure) to my students. The links to iTunes provides an immediate example of their work.

### 5/5 — Love this app!!

Even if you aren't a classical music buff, you'll love having this app. It will give you a wealth of information and of wonderful music every day.

### 5/5 — Grand!

A wonderful app. It's pretty neat to see all the birthdays each day of all the composers! Very wonderful!

### 5/5 — Excellent

Overall, a great app. It's fun to see which composer's birthday it is every day.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Crashes!!

*2011-04-14, version 1.6*

I'm pretty sure I would love this app if I could even open it!! It'll be helpful for me since I'm taking music history classes. Please fix the crashes!!

### 1/5 — A étoffer

*2009-11-05*

### 2/5 — A Major Flaw, and Several Improvements

*2010-07-06*

Wittenberg University's Composer of the Day, is a clean, relatively well designed utility (it could use a swipe feature, an archive, and "year of death" dates) that gives a one sentence blurb of 365 composers, one for each day of the year, complete with birth year. It comes complete with a link to Apple's iTunes store that directs to the featured composer's music. The supervising developer of this app. is Prof. Daniel Kazez of Wittenberg University.

The apps' major flaw is its' incorrect grammar and poor use of English. For example: "America Stephen Foster...was born on *this* 4th of July in 1826". For example "this" should be "the". I wouldn't mention this but for the fact that the application is riddled with these kind of errors. The developer's bizarre use of English - given in the several entries I read - could create significant error in comprehension for students and laymen and needs to be corrected. Another error from July 5th: "American George Rochberg, who used *Romantic* and modern styles" - in this case, "romantic" isn't capitalized. Prof. Kazez can check the Chicago Manual of Style here.

Why, on the whole, grammatical abnormality plagues this app. is a mystery - it should have been professionally proofchecked. I wrote to the supervising developer, who unhelpfully disputed me - incorrectly - this is an authentic let down.

Not recommended at present.

### 3/5 — Meh

*2014-08-26, version 1.6.3*

How could you not list Leonard Bernstein's bd August 25 and instead have Stefan Wolpe??? I don't trust you any more.

### 3/5 — Good, but not great.

*2011-09-23*

I was looking for something to use in my classroom so the students will be ready for music. While the little blurbs are great I'm beginning to agree with other reviewers. There should definitely be an option to see upcoming composers. Death dates would also be great as well as a photo of what the composer looks like (especially for those less popular).

### 3/5 — Good Resource

*2010-07-13, version 0*

This is a great source for learning about the music of both the famous and not so famous composers.

The application would be much more informative if the user could go back and forth by date and be able to at least "look up a composer"

### 3/5 — I like this app.

*2010-01-13, version 0*

This app is great. I would like to see it somewhat more developed. It's too short. I could read an extra paragraph as well as your brief summary.

### 4/5 — Handy reference for this classical DJ

*2015-11-25*

Happy to find this app for my iPhone. Just one more tool to ad-lib from in my classical DJ work. Gave it 4 stars because it does not yet allow you to look ahead of “today”. However, the developer promised me he intends to add that feature soon.
Recommended app for introducing kids and anyone to classical music in small doses.. planting a seed. Wish teachers would make a habit of referring to this nice app in their classrooms to foster an appreciation of this genre.

### 4/5 — Great

*2014-02-06*

Thanks for creating this! It might be nice to be able to share the composer of the day info via social media sites & such; right now you can only share via mail. Thanks!

### 4/5 — Informative!

*2013-08-06*

This app gives a short bio on a composer. You can then tap on a link to the App Store to listen to samples of that composer's music, and buy if you like!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Good for making my learning keep going

*2026-05-16*

Learning about new composers everyday helps me keep my brain active as I get older.

### 5/5 — Love the app!

*2024-10-02*

This is the best app! I have a shortcut set up to open the app right as I’m arriving to work and I make it part of my day to read the bio of the composer and then listen to at least one piece by that composer. I studied music in college but I have learned so much more “new” music that I wouldn’t have known about if it wasn’t for this app!

### 5/5 — Just what I was looking for!

*2023-02-04*

Being a piano teacher, I’m always looking for more resources and things I can implement into my teaching. I feel this app will not only broaden my composer knowledge, but my students knowledge as well. Plus, it’s cool knowing what composer was born today, and be able to read a little snippet about them. I love how each composer has an iTunes link so I can familiarize myself with their music and style, and also play a few pieces these composers are well known for to my students. I also wanted to add, I contacted Daniel with a suggestion I had, and he replied within a few hours. Great app and customer service!

### 5/5 — Wonderful for Discovering Classical Music

*2022-02-13*

I love the brief summary about the classical composer born on each day and the link to ITunes to sample the music. This app makes it easy for me to hear new composers and be exposed to new classical music everyday. Highly recommend this app for a fun and easy way to access the finest music!

### 5/5 — Introducing Composers new and old

*2018-07-15, version 1.6.4*

I’ve had this app for almost 8 yrs. now and still enjoy opening it two or three times a week to learn about composers, some new to me, and others are old friends. Especially useful is the link to the iTunes Store so that you can browse their recorded works. Because many composers have names with difficult spelling, it is so much easier to press a button, than to remember the exact spelling and to type it exactly right.

### 5/5 — Composer of the Day

*2015-02-20*

I love this app. It introduces the whole family to new music and is easy to use. Thank you so much for making it. Please keep up the great work.😘

### 5/5 — Valuable info and great service!

*2014-02-05*

I've always wanted a way to gain knowledge about composers across the world without having to take a college course. This app provides just that in a nice interface. Also, when I asked for a possible feature implementation, the creator of the app quickly replied with a thoughtful response. I'm very pleased.

### 5/5 — Wonderful edition to my daily updates

*2013-12-30*

I check this app everyday! I even wrote an email to the app's developer, Daniel, about Beethoven's birth date not being included. He responded very quickly and told me what I had already suspected. We have a christening date & an estimation on his birth, but nothing exact. I appreciated their diligence to accuracy.

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2013-09-22*

Been using this App for about two years. Unfortunately Central Florida is an orchestral music desert. No radio station in this market plays a single note of classical music. Composer of the Day is only place where I can learn about new and different composers and hear music that is new to me. Great job.

### 5/5 — This App!

*2013-09-19, version 1.6.3*

great app!! Check it everyday
