### 3/5 — Nice idea, needs work

*2026-07-26*

I like the idea of this app as it is often difficult to make ethical choices. However most of the brands I tried were not available (many were UK based companies, including major banks, energy providers, etc).

The app itself needs work to accommodate accessibility features I have turned on such as ensuring larger text is not cut off (e.g. it needs to word wrap if it goes past a single line, e.g. on the feedback page I couldn’t read a question because it was cut off)

### 3/5 — Good app, but subscription

*2026-07-07*

As always, this is a great app, but in order to fully enjoy it you have to 40-ish dollars a year or 4 dollars a month to use it.

### 3/5 — Helpful but misleading

*2026-06-28*

The app itself is a great idea and I had high hopes. However, the more you explore, the more you find the important information hidden behind paywalls. Not only that but the information is sometimes conflicting. For example, they give Fairphone an A, but then give Google Gemini an F even though Fairphone has Gemini built into it. The lack of free information makes this app appear biased and skewed, even giving the feeling that they are just being paid to give some companies a high rating.

**Developer response:** Thanks for giving the app a try and for taking the time to leave detailed feedback.

On Fairphone and Gemini: those are two separate companies, and right now we evaluate each company based on its own practices. We aren't yet factoring in every supplier, partner, or integrated service into a company's grade. That is something we'd like to incorporate over time as we continue improving the platform!

Regarding bias, we don't accept paid placements or sponsorships that influence our ratings. Every company is evaluated using the same methodology, regardless of size or popularity.

As for the subscription, we understand not everyone will want to pay. The subscription helps fund the research, verification, and ongoing development needed to build and maintain independent company ratings while continuing to expand what we offer for free.

We appreciate the feedback, it helps us prioritize what to improve next. We would love to hear more from you, if you have anything else do not hesitate to reach out a hello@consciousspend.com.

### 2/5 — Great app but useless unless you pay the subscription

*2026-06-20*

I think this is a really cool idea and we need more apps like this to expose major companies and make information more readily available. Contrary to the nature and implied intention of the app, the information is in fact not available at all unless you want to pay a subscription. In today’s economy, the average person is not going to be able to do that. If the creators of this application want it to go anywhere, they should at least give the basic information for free with superficial features added on for a price. I understand that the developers also need to make money for the time they spend, but overall it is unfortunate and I was disappointed.

### 4/5 — Paywall

*2026-06-02*

This app is very good. And I understand that the people who made this also need to eat. But by charging a paywall for transparency is to adhere to the very constructs they wish to destroy. This is a tricky situation: one must charge for their work so that it is appreciated in a way that is useful to oneself, but that entire concept is capitalist, and this app aims to pierce the veil of capitalism.

Other than that. This app is perfect

### 4/5 — .

*2026-05-31*

it’s great, but the subscription costs ALOT.

### 2/5 — Questionable

*2026-05-25, version 1.1.0*

Contains blind propaganda and improper ratings for the respective "human impact" and "transparency" for many companies

### 4/5 — Good bones

*2026-05-08*

While their basic system is a great idea, subscribing for features isn’t going to stick and it’ll lessen their environmental impact. They need to change their business model and generate profit some other way.

Recommendation:

Generate profit from allowing ads from companies rated B or higher

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the feedback, we appreciate the recommendation, as we are currently in the very early stages. It's a fair idea and one that isn't off the table. Feel free to reach out at hello@consciousspend.com if you have any more thoughts.

### 2/5 — Great app to use for 1 minute

*2026-05-08*

This app is a pretty good app to use for companies to see what they are doing. Until you get 90% of its features blocked by a 5$ paywall after reviewing 2 or 3 companies

**Developer response:** Appreciate you giving the app a try. Subscriptions cover the research, infrastructure, and operational costs required to keep Conscious running and independent of brand sponsorships or advertising. If you'd be open to sharing more detailed feedback, Please email us at hello@consciousspend.com, specifics on what you were hoping to see would genuinely help us improve.

### 5/5 — Legitimate source

*2026-05-01*

Your go to app for the truth on a brand so you don’t have to go down the click bait rabbit-hole.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Paywall

*2026-08-02*

It’s a great idea, but this app is inaccessible to those who want to shop ethically but are unable to afford the $40 annual subscription. This impact of the app could be much higher with a lower subscription fee or if the cost of research/development was offset with ads from companies above a B tier rating.

### 1/5 — Asking to rate before you use the app

*2026-07-26*

It’s not free. Asking the consumer to rate before using the app once, is so unethical considering you have to pay to use the app. This is the world we live in.

### 1/5 — Paywalling information

*2026-07-21*

Just another company look to make a quick buck off of you. If these people truly cared about making the world a better place, they wouldn’t paywall so much info. The problem is they pose their app on social media as a bastion of truth, and a tool to help you be conscious - but it’s not a tool for collective social justice - it’s just another product. At least if I subscribed to a journalist, I’m getting information that’s not publicly and FREELY available.

### 1/5 — Subscription just to compare brands?

*2026-07-21*

A $60AUD a year charge just to be able to look at more than two brands is already a bit much, but then that charge is also paywalling the ability to find a better replacement for these brands? Seriously???

### 1/5 — The use of needed information about parent company’s/essential info are blocked by a paywall

*2026-07-10*

The ratings for companies are screwed as unity has been involved and pursued by meta since 2015 and the IMPACT RATINGS are messed up as well that only supports certain documented information. The website says there is no paywall but THERES A PAYWALL LOOK AT THEIR ABOUT SECTION IN THEIR WEBSITE AND READ ABOUT GABES FOUNDING STORY AND HOW THEY VALUE TRANSPARENCY YET THEY MAKE YOU PAY FOR IT!! The same guy I accused of being AI btw who conned me into giving him a good review :p

### 1/5 — Paywall

*2026-07-03*

I understand the need for a paywall, but the contradiction between the entire purpose of the app and paywalling alternatives? The part that most people will actually be able to implement? It doesn’t align with the brand whatsoever, and this feature in particular must be immediately changed in order for the app’s credibility to be rectified.

### 1/5 — Blocked by a monthly paywall

*2026-06-29*

Another potential good app that wants you to subscribe to another service. No single purchase or ad driven option.

### 1/5 — Thought it was interesting, but ended up uninstalling

*2026-06-15*

It’s a little tone deaf and ironic to charge a monthly subscriptions just to unlock essential features. Not to mention the scoring system is heavily screwed and makes no sense.

**Developer response:** Appreciate you giving the app a look. Overall grades and the three pillar ratings are available on the free tier, the subscription unlocks deeper report elements, and it funds the research and infrastructure that keep Conscious independent of brand sponsorships and advertising. We're early stage and actively exploring different access models, so feedback shapes where we go. On the scoring, we'd like to hear which companies felt off and why, that's how the methodology gets sharper. Email us at hello@consciousspend.com.

### 2/5 — Ironically Un-Ethical

*2026-07-24*

I love the concept behind the app, but locking it’s features behind a paywall is very disappointing. Shopping ethically should be made as easy and accessible as possible in order to maximize the amount of people participating, and therefore maximizing the potential impact this app could make. Charging to access the services just comes across as a scummy buisness trying to make money off people who want to do the right thing.

### 2/5 — Why make it so expensive?

*2026-07-14*

If you’re making an ethical spending app, wouldn’t you want as many people using it as possible to stay away from these evil companies? Why add a paid wall that keeps people from divesting? You have great research, but if you truly cared about ethics rather than making a couple bucks, you’d make it free.

**Developer response:** Appreciate this, and it’s feedback we hear a lot, so we’re actively exploring other options right now. One thing worth clearing up though: the core of the app is free. Overall grades, Pillars and our boycott feature are there without paying, so anyone can see which companies to walk away from at no cost. That’s the part that actually drives divesting, and it’s open to everyone.

The subscription funds the research & infrastructure that keeps us running. It also helps us stay independent! That funding is exactly what lets us answer to users instead of the companies we rate.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — legit

*2026-05-16*

this is great and helps u be an activist with ur wallet also all the info is legit

### 5/5 — This is amazing, little differences.

*2026-05-10*

I’m just noticing that i have been feeling better about choosing brand i KNOW are good. I trade stocks a little and have been raving about this to all my buddies. If i had to say one thing i don’t like, it might be the lack of companies but more are added everyday and it’s SUPER easy to request them.

### 5/5 — Love the mission

*2026-05-09*

This is the best tool around for spending ethically. People have the power!

### 5/5 — This app has so much potential

*2026-05-09*

It’s important for us as individual humans to recognise that while our own footprints are small, they scale up, they replicate and converge into severe impacts. Conscious tells you how to fight back, how to mitigate your impact and every download pushes our vision of a better world forward.

Gabe has done something incredibly special with this app, and it would be an insult to our humanity to not support it.
