The only downside of it is you can’t customize the controls on the controller in the settings. NOW for the worse side of the game. There’s a MAJOR level cap with stages where you can’t play them unless you’re a certain level and at a certain point leveling up is a real pain. As far as the gacha aspect, yes there’s some gimmicky stuff in the game making it P2W but if you join a laid back legion and log in every day you’ll accumulate diamonds within weeks if not months and I’m talking hundreds of dollars of money saved from logging in for it and taking advantage of diamond events. Lastly, my advice before you play the game AVOID PVP! Sure you can get the same characters as your opponents with the same abilities but these people have spent hundreds of not THOUSANDS of dollars to max out their characters on the spot which will dominate you every time making PVP the most unbalanced part of the game. ### 3/5 — Cheats/Bugs sure but you’re the real issue. *2023-06-19* You literally stated in an announcement you felt Hellen wasn’t hitting hard enough and then made this the worst “op” situation you ever “whoopsed” in or as we call it “an intentional money grab” then trapped people in “another abysmal display error” and then proceeded to invade there personal accounts and picked them apart like an organ donor that never gave permission. You may as well as tattooed a corpse of a person who’s religion forbids tattoos. (By the by I'm of such a religion and lawyered up so by all means “cancel me” so please don’t play me as a villain as you are doing a wonderful job of that as it is I’m merely pointing out persecutors). They only care about money money money and it’s ridiculous that these prices are off the roof no one can afford all of the items plus I know and payed with the hackers and they try to deny it but like what I’ve said the developers don’t care at all the team is called (Contra) the whole team is all hackers plus people who really play actually plays without using hacks apk and using third party’s to get stuff in order to win **Developer response:** Hello Commander! This game does a great job of capturing that. Though a little slow paced for free players, it still has enough fun to keep you coming back 30 minutes a day. The base characters you get just by playing the game are great, and buying characters isn’t needed at all. The weapon system is a huge money pit, and is better off just enjoying the weapons you get, which are pretty good. As frequent as the ads are to buy things, when you realize how much you’d pay to get so little, you become less interested in spending even small amounts. It’s fun to play but there are a few things that can be done better. The auto aim will sometimes just not work at all. Coupled with terrible hit detection, it leads to some head scratching moments. When I say bad hit detection, I mean getting hit on a side of the screen you aren’t even on when the attack is made. It’s legendary just for that. Starts slow because there are about 12 different modes to explain. Misses on the traditional story mode. You will play stage by stage while leveling up. One-life mode isn’t the traditional story either. Once the game opens up, it becomes a daily grind for weapons and characters to remain competitive in pvp battles. I see value in the battle pass($4.99) but feel compelled to spend more to accomplish a certain progression. That’s where it loses the spark. You’ll Pay for diamonds, spins, additional characters and skins. ### 1/5 — Still Nothing *2022-01-04, version 1.29.85.8657* Twice I’ve had purchased items not appear and twice developers confirmed the purchase and lack of items. Then they do absolutely nothing and state an escalation team or some other group needs to act. My advice is just don’t give these people real money and expect to lose some diamonds every so often. And expect this happens to a lot of users and that the social environ will be shady. Like every legion gets to a point where the chiefs keep donations, stop opening/upgrading the shop, and never provide any perks. Probably trying to recomp what the contra devs took from them. ### 2/5 — Shockingly disappointed 😔 *2022-01-03, version 1.29.85.8657* To be as honest as possible I love the original game and still have it on the console and when I first saw the game I was thrilled. Now I’ve been on it for 123 days now and I’m very disappointed. I have spend quite a bit of money to support the game thinking it would help me out as well. But im literally getting no where!!! And above all I am nowhere near my competitors and seem to be losing more than winning…..let’s just say that spending anymore on this game is not worth the level of fun and believe me I’ve spent way more on games that gave more and treat paying customers with real deals!!! ### 4/5 — If Contra returns. The game is fun and brings back the memories and sprit of the original game. Throw back levels, enemies, characters, and some new additions. Thanks to the developers that give the game a new birth. On the negative. This thing is a gaming grind-ah-thong. I have been playing this game well over six months now. Doing the same thing day after day. And being teased with a carrot on stick that you might get the new character you what to try, or a new weapon. But if you don’t open your wallet and pay. Your going to grind until it gets boring. Then take a break. To the developers. Here’s an idea(just a thought)maybe stop nickel and dime the fans of the game we your fans love and what to play. I understand games are a tough and challenging if not expensive job to take on. And we all have bills to pay. But give them what they want. The Game. No constant overuse levels, let us try the new, characters, and weapons. I’ll give the a product a four star rating. Because it’s a good game. Not sure if players who buy contra pass will even reach level 55. Very hard to earn cp to level up. Spending money to buy weapons or skins is confusing, we get fragments for everything, not worth to spend money. I don’t mind spending money to buy skins or weapons, but it should be worth spending a dime. This game will die soon, since everything is for money here. They need to fix PvP games based on time zones. ### 3/5 — It was fun for a while, level 74 is my limit *2021-12-02, version 1.29.83.8711* When you reach level 25 you can only level up once maybe twice a day depending on how well you do. I’ve reach level 74 without spending a single dollar, it just took a while. Now it takes 2 or 3 days to level up unless you pay for the V.I.P upgrade which I’m not willing to do. Combat simulation scores hit on you without actually hitting you. PvP modes get boring because lack of different stages plus the experience points gained in PvP modes don’t really help with leveling up. ### 3/5 — Fun with exceptions *2021-11-16, version 1.29.83.8711* Yes, it’s Contra and some of it harkens back to the original console game but it’s totally a 21st century pay for play mobile game but… Yes, there are in-app purchases that you can easily dump tons of money into to get the best of everything faster but there’s also a ton of variety to play around with but progress and updating weapons and characters will take progressively longer and longer the higher rank you achieve. There is some side-scrolling action but it’s limited so don’t expect to bang through 4 full levels in one sitting. This is more like a builder game where you constantly have to unlock unlock unlock. One nice thing is in this game, no one can attack you (particularly when offline) and steal all your hard-earned resources. Been playing for 100 days without spending $ so far and mostly it’s… get up in the morning, play today’s missions, and then get on with the rest of my day. The lottery system of winning heros and weapons isn't really a lottery system, it's more a system of spend more diamonds and more money and frequently require max spending to unlock the hero or the weapon. I do have to say they did do a great job on graphics and smooth interplay and really deep ecosystem, it's almost too complex. gone are the days of simple shooting and jumping around, you'll have to learn an entire new operating system to squeeze the most out of this game ### 3/5 — Fun for 2 days, aggressive pinch to spend *2021-10-25, version 1.29.83.8711* Game does so many things right. It is fun, exciting, incorporates contra’s historical heroes/villains, and has high production values. Very promising…. However, after two days of playing the game I can already experience the game progression squeezing me to pay. The game’s pace slows considerably, and access to the “fun” slows abruptly within 2 days. I don't mind paying, but i do NOT like it when a game “pinches” me so hard to spend just so that i can progress. I would have been happy to hand over $20 to $50, but do not twist my arm so early. The game is overly complex , too much advertising , misleading sales , pay to win and pay some more. There is too much to do , writing is too small to read or understand everything, and the least attractive portion of the game for me is all the bloated unnecessary materials for upgrading every facet of the game. My breaking point was when I received "gifts" that can only be used and activated with VIP access. Lastly , I received a "diamond voucher" good for 100 diamonds. I should be able to use it wherever i want provided the loot is not behing a paywall , but when i went to purchase an upgrade for my super weapon the game said my 100 Diamond voucher was not enough to pay the 100 diamond price , instead , it referred me to the top up screen to purchase more diamonds... congratulations , you ruined one of the greatest game sagas of all time. This version have hackers that have unlimited firepower, speed, accuracy and dexterity. Ranked matchs or PvP are rigged. I’ve paid my hard earned money to be cheated repeatedly, no real skill is needed to win. A or B hero’s can defeat the so called elite S heroes with ease makes no difference in class or rank. Your individual firepower doesn’t matter when battling other player or other modes like Void, city of ash ect. The time and money spent is just a waste, my firepower is currently over 900k and I lose to less experience or player with much less firepower and lower ranked heroes. The price of heroes and SS weapons are outrageous and not worth the expenses. It’s best to choose a game with a true balance of gameplay. And people spend 10k and up there are hacks and codes. U can get killed with one move have the same character and the same special move does almost no damage how??? No I am not complaining just because I lose. It’s crazy how you can have the same hero origin for a example and get absolutely destroyed by one special hit the other player with three of the same specials and they still live. I have been killed by two loves multiple times. Have jumped out of the move etc and still get bodied. It’s crazy how some players are invincible. Everytime I get close to top 5 in PvP I get unbeatable players. If it was skill I would be fine. Anyone can press one button tho. It’s whatever but definitely hackers are at it. Also don’t waste your money on upgrading. Wasted hundreds and get zero result. Somehow the First awakening for the gold am is better than the second. Second cost 30 dollars. Only choice. Game is fun but hacked or fixed. They will never change anything or care as it gets ppl to spend ridiculous amounts of money thinking it will level the field. It doesn’t. But hey just quit playing. If you want the latest and greatest weapon you have to buy gold keys or tickets to which when it is all said and done and you are able to acquire the weapon, you have spent at least over $50 for it and sometimes for the characters, you can end up spending close to $100 which is insane. ### 1/5 — You CAN have fun… at first *2022-02-11, version 1.29.86.3638* Fun in the beginning. Then you realize the only way to keep up is spending a ton of money. Meaningful progression is lost after a few hours when the game basically forces you to make purchases. Do not waste money on this game because the dev team will never allow you to win the good items. Players can spend money to buy in game currency or anything to play gatcha, if players loose, no issue, if players win the big price, they will say it was their mistake and players were not suppose to win; they will take back the items and the purchased currency they sold to players but keep the money. Dev team would tell players to contact Apple for refund but not warrantee players can get refund successfully. In other to get away with the ‘robbery’, the team would compensate players with some low value marterials and trash gatcha boxes(nothing great or desirable items) New players can join for fun and experience but never ever make any purchase in this game. ### 1/5 — Fraudulent company *2022-01-30, version 1.29.86.3638* This company does not think twice about removing items bought in-game no matter what consequence it causes the purchaser. Recently they sold an item that had “too many keys”…people bought them and used them to get random prizes, then spent more on packs in order to upgrade these items also restructured weapon arsenals to accommodate said weapons only to be told they would all be removed days later. This effectively ruined the game play for thousands of paying players. A couple days later they also “gave too many” free items in another event and also rolled those back once more. See tons of paying players leaving the game? The developer done messed up, offered something for money (they made their own mistake there), tons of people bought it, they removed those items and replaced it with “compensation”, and then suggested everyone unhappy with the compensation seek refunds. This isn’t even the first time they pulled similar shenanigans, but certainly the most egregious. The worst is not that they made a mistake, it’s the handling of it in the aftermath, thinking they can smooth it over with some piddling rewards compared to what I actually purchased with real money. Except it's a pay to play platform. Then you get to the good stuff. Like the gambling roulette type wheel to always get the good stuff on the last spin. Or the latest bait and switch. They offered a pack that looked like a great deal. Then they claim that it was a display error and are now repossessing the items and any upgrades that were done with the purchase. Oh this review will probably be deleted like every other negative review. But I have to try and warn people about the shady tactics this company uses. You make a purchase and its final. They offer a item and you purchase that item then they realize it was too good of an offer and they can take it back. ### 1/5 — Pay to win. Yeah you can play for free . But you’ll play at a disadvantage. That is why I rate it one star because of the game predatory practices. Very unethical behavior and very glitchy systems . Overall it is a very disappointing experience. Update : I contacted them through their support line inside the app . It was just terrible . The game glitched and took my diamonds . For some reason even though I showed them the screenshots of all the proof it still had to get escalated . It’s been a weeek with no response on a simple fix . How you except your fan base to keep their loyalty towards your game and keep spending money on it when your not willing give them no support . Beyond disappointed at this point . Yes the game is designed in a way to get you to spend money but many gacha games are and honestly I don’t mind replaying levels over and over when I’m only playing the game in short spurts! EDIT: I just realized that apparently the devs of this game scammed the players who used real money to buy things. This is also why I’m changing the review title. Thankfully these aren’t an issue for me considering I’m not planning on spending a single penny but to anyone who wants to play this it’s important to separate the art from the artist and not give in to the micro-transactions. Takes me back to Nintendo days. 1 V 1 is my favorite mode. I’m ranked in the top 10. Although there are a lot of in-app purchases to upgrade weapons and characters you can still grind to level up your firepower, buy new characters, etc. So it is not a must to spend money like others claim… Sure it can help you get the upper hand during a battle… but it IS NOT a necessary to get a win and become a top player. If you run out of ANYTHING, for example (diamonds, stamina, weapon fragments) there are modes specifically designed for you to gain more as rewards for completing the challenges… I have not spent a dime the 7 months that I’ve had this game and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GAME!!👍🏾 ### 5/5 — I love Contra Returns but a few observations *2022-07-22, version 1.29.91.8859* I love Contra. It’s my number one all time game from Nintendo in my life. When I saw this, I hopped all over it! I love it! The ONLY issues I’m experiencing is the Ashes and Void.. the participation is lacking because I can’t get far with the lack of players. If you could make the AI the same power as you for the stage so you’ll be able to do it yourself will be awesome! I hope I can get a response! Lol ### 5/5 — Woohoo *2022-07-18, version 1.29.86.3638* Y’know, back in day being able to beat Contra was mission impossible, still it was fun, the storyline was epic and me and my friends played all day. Well time went by and with time games got better and Contra was lost, and then it returned, I downloaded it and man I haven’t stopped playing it ever since. It’s not impossible, and it still retains its identity as a Contra title, the character design and cultural fusion is amazing. Play the game that’s all I can say, and to the devs, keep it alive and keep it up. ### 5/5 — Reborn nostalgia *2022-01-02, version 1.29.85.8657* I’ve only done this with a very similar game, Megaman X Dive and they are VERY similar. In so far as play options, graphics and concepts, but that piece of my childhood that is the core of games like Contra an Mega Man is what keeps me wanting to dive back in. I love that these oldies have evolved with the times and can keep me interested. Sure it’s a “gacha” but what game isn’t these days? I don’t think people want to pay a full video game price for a game on a mobile device. And it shows developers if the classics still have the clout they used to. No it’s not perfect, it needs controller support, but it’s a 5-star because it makes me want to keep playing. The best part of gacha games is that you can spend tons of money or no money and still be transported 30 years. I’ll tell you what it also did…it made me want to go back and buy all of the Contra games I never got to. It’s a quick, enjoyable laser rifle blast from the past that makes me smile. There are SO many game modes with new permanent ones added all the time including temporary special events. I have spent minimal money and only done so to maybe get a gun i really want, or for daily perks. I have so many gems and naturally without paying anything that It would be very difficult to run out. I LOVE this game. Especially the new combat simulation mode, who’s 3 tries a day stack and rollover the following days if unused. From all the terrible ones to all the great ones and let me tell you this game is amazing for us old school fans! Yes it’s free to play which I usually hate but it rewards nicely with the VIP system and you don’t have to spend a lot to gain a lot! I always support devs and even thought I’ve spent a bit more than I’ve wanted to (I’m a contra super fan, so it got me) my friend has only payed once (support the developers!) and has gotten massive rewards just by doing all the daily missions there are to (and there are PLENTY others to do). It isn’t a perfect game but for a game on the App Store that’s fermium it does it’s job to us 80s and 90s kids. And if you’re from the new era and love side scroller shooters then power to you! I reccomend it to the fullest! I was thrilled to see this brought back. So far I’m loving it. There’s tons of modes to play but I will say you really have to hit level 40 before the game opens up to you. I have not run into control issues like other people have mentioned so I suppose it could be the hardware used. Plays fine on iPhone 12 Pro though. To the devs: energy is too stringent (or the cost to raid or run missions is too much). It halts progression to a point where you pay or (what most people will do) uninstall the app in frustration. This might also tie into the need to basically level the heck out of weapons so you can advance to the next level and continue playing story missions. I invested a bit into this game but did so smartly so I am not disappointed at anything. But I would look into more ways to earn energy because it will halt progress for a lot of players and ultimately could stifle the game.
