Pinching to go back doesn’t really make any sense. It’s fine that it’s there but there should be a more obvious way to transition between the different screens. **Developer response:** Thanks for your review. There is a way to navigate without the gestures. If you tap gently either on a page/category or in a gallery you will see a small set of buttons on the right that includes a back arrow for navigating back. Sometimes it can be hard to see depending on the background image or video, for this reason if you double tap to get the toolbar you can select the styling (pencil) and select the 'side controls' menu item to change the colour and appearance of the side menu to make it easier to see and use. ### 3/5 — Fix The Slide Chicklets *2019-07-16, version 3.9.0* You are suppose to be able to swipe to bring up a row of slides that allows you to quickly navigate to a particular image. This has largely stopped working. Sometimes swiping closes the app, other times it returns you to the hone screen, and often nothing happens. I suspect the problem is due to Apple’s increased use of swiping in the base interface. There seems to be a conflict. I would suggest finding a new motion or tap to invoke this functionality. **Developer response:** I've just re-tested this to make absolutely certain (as I tested before release) and I cannot replicate this problem and it has not been reported by anybody else. Can you post a support ticket at support dot rocketgardenlabs.com so we can look into this a what may be specific to your situation? A single vertical swipe should work as normal. In addition there is also a button on the sidebar (three squares) which will also display and hide the thumbnails (chiclets) ### 4/5 — Increase number of images that can be added. *2019-05-03, version 3.8.7* Great program, however, it would be extremely useful if the number of images that can be added be increased. Currently the limit is 250 images. **Developer response:** We'll look into the option of doing this for the next major version of the app. ### 3/5 — Dropbox sync feature is missing *2017-08-23, version 3.8.6* Be careful.... you may need to look elsewhere for a portfolio. I specifically wanted to use the sync feature and it is not available in this current release. None of the documentation mentions this when in fact this is considered a "Key Feature". The other feature I wanted to use was "Web Publish". However after discovering that this required hosting the page on their web service I will not use this feature. I expected to be able to upload the created pages to my own site. I do not want to lose control of my images and there is no easy way to delete the pages from the service except uploading a blank gallery. I attempted to reply to the support email and it was rejected due to a miss configured server. So I have replied here instead. Here is the answer to my support case: Hi Hank, I'm sorry for this but because we had to completely rebuild our Dropbox integration prior to them turning off their version 1.0 API in June. In the process we did not add in the sync function because of effort and complexity involved. However we understand that a lot of people found this specific feature very useful when creating a new gallery, so we are currently reviewing a different way to add back the functionality for an update in the near future. Paul Freeman Chief Designer Foliobook **Developer response:** I'd like to point out that Dropbox integration is still available in our app. The comment title and quote is a little out of context because what is under discussion here is not our main Dropbox integration which we have recently completely rewritten to keep up with Dropbox latest version, rather it is a specialised feature that only a small number of users were using. Also we received more support calls from people who found the advanced feature confusing than we did from complaints of its removal. I'm sorry that this caused you a problem and I'll modify our documentation to make the current Dropbox capability more clearly described. ### 4/5 — Nice portfolio with one caveat *2016-12-23, version 3.8.1* I just recently got my first iPad, and the portfolio program I was using on my iPhone was no longer in the app store, so I started looking for a replacement. The customization available allows you to create a portfolio that looks unique. Foliobook does everything I need to do with one exception. Currently it allows Categories and Galleriers. Categories can hold further Categories or Galleries, and Galleries hold images. It would be nice to add a feature for Collections, similar to what Photoshop and Zenfolio have. That way you can collect images from several galleries to display them together, without having to duplicate the images being stored. ### 3/5 — SO close. Please update *2016-05-13, version 3.7.6* I love the idea of this app. It looks like I have a custom app made just for my portfolio. It looks great, but as others have said the navigation is poor. My clients are initially impressed by Foliobook but it's soon dampened by them getting stuck somewhere struggling how to get in or out of parts of the portfolio. I'm constantly leaning over to help them figure things out. PLEASE update the navigation. If you fix that to be more intuitive, this app will be fantastic. ### 4/5 — Good, could be great *2015-01-18, version 3.7.4* I like this app a lot. I would love it but it needs a few things. The text boxes extending instead of the putting three dots I'm the middle of the word would be nice. More layouts and/or more customization options would be nice. Being able to see the file names is imperative! If a client really loves a photo being able to jot down the file name for ordering is a deal breaker. I paid $10 for this but I'm sticking with the less pretty but more functional $3 Photo Manager Pro until this feature exists. ### 3/5 — Works, but not great *2014-11-30, version 3.7.4* To be honest, I've tried several apps like this one and this is by far the best one. That said, it needs a lot of work to be truly customizable. 1. Main title and subtitles should have the ability to use different fonts and colors. 2. Subtitle scope box should be able to change size so that text can actually get larger and not be hyphen...ated like this. 3. Need the ability to add PDF files too portfolio or at least a link to the files. 3. Link to a directory or file by image and not just text would be great. I understand the desire to keep the app simple and clean but it is too limiting as is and actually has the opposite effect at times and can look amateurish. ### 4/5 — Great App for making portfolio of my artwork *2013-10-27, version 3.7* Just purchased FolioBook and I'm really impressed. It is a great app for making an iPad portfolio of my artwork to show clients. Also, the online videos are really nice to learn the ins and outs of Foliobook, as well as tricks and advanced features. Extremely happy that newest version has a 'publish to web" feature. I hope this is enhanced in future versions to include multiple galleries, more images, and metadata. When this occurs, I will give 5 stars. ### 4/5 — Great for Pros and Amateurs *2013-02-09, version 3.1* I was looking for an app that would allow me to categorize and present my photos for showing family and friends, but one that looked professional. This app is exactly what I was looking for. Customizing the folders and the look is easy once you learn the controls, which are pretty intuitive. Importing photos is also simple. I haven't tried a lot of other photo portfolio apps so I can't honestly say this is "the best", but I found this one to be excellent. I am very satisfied with it, and the people who use it to view my photos are very impressed. ### 3/5 — More Sub-galleries Please *2013-01-31, version 3.1* I wish there was a way to add folders after selecting splash page galleries. (For example I am a costume designer, and I have four categories of work- "Theater" "Film" "Styling" "Sketches"- and each has subfolders of shows that I do not wish to display on the splash page. After making a selection on the splash page I would like to then show a page with a thumbnail folder of each show- select and then open a large gallery. One more step to perfect organization! ### 3/5 — What's with the zoom feature?? *2012-12-31, version 3.1* Great app, honestly one of the fastest and most responsive portfolio apps that I have experienced. I love the fact that I can use my own logo on the splash page, and that I can add subcategories within each menu. However there is one major flaw for me, and that is the zoom feature. I find it unintuitive and awkward, the image doesn't seem to be inline with the motion of my finger, and when I 'pinch' to zoom out (normal iPad function) it closes the gallery. Instead you are supposed to tap to exit zoom, which Unfortunately, I am an Illustrator, and the first thing people want to do when viewing my work is get a better look! If this feature were corrected, my search for the perfect portfolio app would be over. ### 3/5 — Want it to work better *2012-11-27, version 3.1* I bought foliobook after reading the reviews AND seeing it in person on my friend's ipad. I was impressed with the functionality and professional image it gives as opposed to using the photos application. however, it has a few bugs and issues. they weren't deal breakers, but they should be addressed ASAP. image transitions are shaky. they don't feel or look very fluid, and the pinch to zoom out and return to the home screen is super sensitive, and again pretty jerky. i'm currently having issues adding pictures from the photo library, it crashes every time i do it. for the price of the app, i'd expect that to be flawless at the bare minimum. i used foliobook today for client presentations, and while nobody exclaimed "Wow! nice portfolio app!" i felt better about the way my work was presented. ### 4/5 — Fabulous...for the future. *2012-11-19, version 3.1* I researched a few apps online before purchasing any iPad portfolio app. For the intended purpose of showcasing photography, this app is very slick and impressive. I can customize everything so it matches other portfolios and business cards. I give it four stars because I've only found it to read JPEG and video files (after purchasing the video plugin). I have graphic designs in PDF format, and I'm disappointed I may have to convert them. If they update Foliobook to support more file extensions, I'd be complete! Aside from that fact, this is a great app to show your versatility and professionalism. ### 4/5 — Great App could use an update *2012-11-17, version 3.1* This is a really great app for showing your work. It's sleek simple And gives you a ton of options. I do like the slide show but also I Clients like to interact with the iPad (swiping back and fourth photos) This program can be a little sticky with that, when you swipe to see the next image it can be a little temperamental. Almost as if you have to swipe a certain way for the program to read it. Other than that this is a great way to show your work. ### 4/5 — Always With Me *2012-11-08, version 3.1* I'm hesitant to spend money on apps at this price point, but I saw several positive reviews and recommendations for this app, so I gave it a try. Overall, it's a good app and allows me to carry an extensive portfolio with me. It is not terribly intuitive to set up, especially when using a hierarchical structure, however, once you learn the basics it's a powerful tool to showcase photography on the go. Recommend. ### 4/5 — Just what I expected: just enough *2012-08-18, version 3.0* Minimal enough and capacious enough. Easy to figure out. And the results, in the hands of family and friends, is very complementary to my work. There is likely some evolution coming in the acquisition and storage department, but I haven't been put off by the way it is handled now. Four stars mostly because five is overused, and nothing is perfect. Five for the look of it for sure. 3.5 for the implementation of the menu system. Satisfaction in dollars for services: 5. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Deleting *2020-04-05, version 3.9.4.1* Deleting and moving on since this App will soon be obsolete in an effort to move everyone to version 4 with a subscription. I don’t do subscriptions to most apps, and certainly not for a photo portfolio app. Best Wishes on your new endeavors. **Developer response:** You are incorrect about this app being obsolete. This app will continue to work, just as it has in the past on iOS 13. Some issues may arise beyond 2020 with updates to iOS 14 and I have no intention to update the app for iOS 14 other than minor bug fixes that are common to the new Foliobook 4 app. Anyone wishing to use this app for years to come need only perform the appropriate backups and housekeeping. Thank you for your custom. ### 1/5 — Difficult setup. Too many technical barriers to get up and running. I gave up. *2019-12-17, version 3.9.3* I spent a good bit of time trying to get this going. I gave it more time than I should have and even watched the tutorial videos hoping to get passed the technical barriers. There are certain things, like adding a logo, that appear to be easy but just never worked for me. I regret the time I put into the app but I since I spent the money I figure I better try. Eventually I just gave up. **Developer response:** I'm very sorry to hear this. We'll always try to help quickly if we receive a support message when people hit a problem, but I understand if you decided not to take up the option of our direct assistance. Thousands of people use the app every day but we recognise that the app doesn't mesh with some workflows. Our new version of the app Foliobook 4 has made it easier to add and modify the Logo image and the drag and drop import of files makes it intuitive to add still and video content from a variety of sources and continues to be improved in terms of intuitive usability. ### 1/5 — Doesn’t seem to be updated *2019-04-10, version 3.8.7* Huge trouble loading and/or playing video. Can’t upload from iTunes or Dropbox. I paid for the video extra, so not updating it to work is messed up. **Developer response:** I'm sorry to hear about your problems, we have updated the app and replaced video import so that it can now be used easily from any video added to the photo library. ### 1/5 — add a different app to your portfolio *2012-03-02, version 2.9* beware. this app was insanely difficult to use, difficult to customize, difficult to move the gallery names around especially. also difficult was the management of images, which is really its only job. another problem is that changes made in the vertical format do not always carry over when the screen is rotated for vertical viewing - also a really fun thing i had to work around. ALSO: there is a glitch where, if using seven or eight galleries, the images duplicate within the last two galleries, with no course to change the images in either one. i spend four hours, AFTER importing all of my images and customizing the landing pages (another four hours) trying unsuccessfully to work around these bug. no success. i want my money back. ### 1/5 — Very disappointing! *2011-06-10, version 2.3* Bought this app based on reviews seen but what a MAJOR letdown/ripoff- 1. Photo transition buggy (and I'm iPad 2). 2. No captions can be added to images, neither do existing image titles or numbers carry over from iphoto import. Very frustrating. 3. The title or home page functionality is very limited - separate fonts can't be used (afaik) for main title and menu. Font style picked up for both simultaneously. 4. Crazy limited manipulation of fonts and cover (home) design layout. 5. I like music to accompany my different galleries as they are intrinsically linked to my work - no such facility here. I can see this app could be fantastic - but it's got miles and MILES to go before it expects a serious design person to consider this as their go-to portable digital portfolio presentation app. At best, it's a very basic, very dumbed down slideshow app! Shocked that this is being charged at the price it is- keynote and inbuilt photo app do a much better job of slideshows, the only thing they miss is the "home" page. Rip off. Off to get my money back! ### 2/5 — Glitchy unfortunately *2018-05-30, version 3.8.6* I’ve searched forever and purchased many portfolio apps over the last few years. There is a Huge need for a professional portfolio viewer that is 1) high resolution capable and 2) a simple clean interface. I believe many professionals use their iPad to showcase their work to prospective clients and for professional critiquing. I thought this would be that app. When working it is exactly what a needed, note I said when it’s working. The app has just to many glitches, it’s pretty basic so I can’t understand why the developers can’t solve the issues. No matter is you stroll slowly or quick it will display images twice or skip over others. It’s completely hit or miss. When you hand your iPod over for the client to review you have one chance at a first impression, I’m tired of making excuses for the app. Like I said there is a need for an app like this, please guys update and make it what it could be. **Developer response:** I'm sorry you have had problems, we are working on an update that specifically addresses the issue you have mentioned. ### 2/5 — Build your own portfolio in Keynote. Avoid this App *2017-01-11, version 3.8.1* Purchased this app based on all the glowing pro reviews out there. Not satisfied overall and wish I could get my money back. What I Like: Custom Branded Home Page Ability to match my brand throughout the presentation. What I Don't Like: Poorly Designed & Clunky UI ... this needs a major overhaul in UX/UI design. Pinch to Zoom is wonky - does not zoom into the area I am pinching (like expected) but instead zooms into the lower corner. Regardless of where I am zooming. NOT easy to return to home using the pinch method. Customization isn't as simple as it could be. Again, this is a UX issue. Side buttons are ugly (as are most of the stock gfx). Needs a modern and simple UI to stay competitive Overall, this app has potential and I know plenty of pros using it. But I found it much easier to simply create my own Keynote presentation and export that as an interactive pdf. Benefit of the Keynote/PDF was the ability to email the final pdf to my potential clients after my presentation. I do not recommend this app. ### 2/5 — Painfully slow and glitches *2014-04-24, version 3.7.1* The design of this app is nice and I definitely did research before buying this. I bought it because I liked how you can customize it and how minimal it is. The freezing and glitching however is painful. I had back to back meetings with potential clients and the way it stalls and sometimes glitches was painful. The glitching is such that an image will be doubled or tripled even if it wasn't in the layout. I even restored my iPad and set up as new before installing and using this app. The program doesn't seem to be storing or running that much, that it should be this slow. Definitely should have done a PDF in indesign like my gut instinct told me. ### 2/5 — … not so good... *2013-08-23, version 3.5.3* I'm trying to find an app that will allow me to sort images the way I want without manipulating any EXIF data… This was recommended by Terry White at Bestappsite and while I don't use dropbox (which is why he was excited about it…) the interface is clunky, the zoom feature is bad (you should be AT LEAST as good as the Photos app…) and forcing me to come up with some sort of "cover" as if this was a book presentation is just silly. The touch/multifunction is too sensitive, I keep exiting out of the images, that's terrible when you're trying to present something… Like I mentioned, the Photos app does a better job… Regarding "performance", I'm using an iPad 4 (which is one of five iPads I have…) so there's no excuse for touch issues or lack of user experience. Just needs more polish, less trying to be fancy, just show my images well. ### 2/5 — Never works on the first try *2011-09-22, version 2.4* Bought FolioBook approximately a year ago. Had problems uploading photos and finally found a work around by going through IPhoto. Just bought the app on a whim (Read what this Plug-in CAN'T do before you buy) and now when I follow the instructions and try and upload a video from Iphoto the video does not appear. I don't feel like spending the next two days emailing customer support back and forth to try and solve this one. There are easier ways to show video to clients. FolioBook is not a great tool for a photographer who is working in video. And all the development team is promising is updates sometime in the near future. We just discovered a planet with two suns. Why can't FolioBook allow me to show all my video and make it easy to do. Wish I had my $1.99 back. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Beautiful, efficient, fantastic. *2015-08-05, version 3.7.6* As a professional photographer with design experience, I use this to customize 3-4 categories of images to show art buyers. This was great before the update and now it is just fantastic! The new built-in connection to Photoshelter allowed me easily download images directly from my site. No more uploading and sizing for each location and I can easily update my site and Foliobook with new work and be consistent. The interface works well and quickly when showing retina quality images. I also customize the home page with an image that includes custom typography for my categories. The Foliobook links are left blank and positioned over the type to avoid the limited selection of typefaces available for Foliobook. This keeps my typography consistent with my website and cards. It's a little extra work, but well worth it! ### 5/5 — The Best App to use for Portfolio Work !! *2015-01-13, version 3.7.4* I was in a constant never ending world of apps to build a portfolio until I started using this app. It is just wonderful to use! Sure it needs improvement but still it is the best. In order to improve the app further I would like to see ability to covert into pdf for easy email and viewing work on tablets or computers that do not have foliobook. Also it would be great if a foliobook"viewer" were to made for the iphone for those times when one does not have the ipad around. All in all a 5 star product.. ! ### 5/5 — Such a superb app *2014-11-07, version 3.7.4* This app is excellent. When I bought an ipad it was with high hopes to display my artwork in a portfolio format. I realized quickly that the photo album app was garbage and started looking for other options, this was by far the best. I am most impressed by how much you can customize your portfolio. I have mine set up to have multiple categories and sub-categories which on it's own sets this app apart from others I've seen. If you spend a little time to design your homepage image this app can function like a locally saved website. I had one quarrel with it, which was the issue where zooming out of images returned you prematurely to the homepage. It was frustrating but the support staff was responsive to my frustrations and the problem has been corrected in the most recent update. I give this app the highest marks possible because it has been instrumental in me showing potential clients my artwork at conventions. ### 5/5 — Elegant and fluid *2014-04-06, version 3.7.1* This app is simple to use and is responsive to all commands. I have a couple of portfolio apps but I end up using this one because it's intuitive. If you need info on how to do something in particular there are short but precise instructions a click away. Love the possibility to connect with Dropbox. Photographers and people needing show high quality images in a beautiful and customizable package will love this app. ### 5/5 — Elegant and functional *2014-01-05, version 3.7.1* I've had this app for three years and it has evolved (along with the iPad) so that it is now a really smooth and elegant way to collect and present work. The original iPad could not keep up with it but the iPad Air is fast enough to let Foliobook work as designed, and it's a well-oiled machine. In fact the wipe function in Foliobook is much more fluid than the one in Apple's slide show. I'm very happy with the app. ### 5/5 — The Best Portolio App... So Far. *2013-06-03, version 3.4* I am surprised to see so many poor reviews here. With it's new dropbox integration, I am loving this app! Setup your galleries on your computer, put a numerical sequence if you don't want to drag thumb nails in the apps light box area - go into your FolioBook "F" setup to get started with layout and customizing and your set. Variable transition slide shows, soundtrack, custom home page and logo, multiple galleries and categories, etc. It is really slick and after trying many, this (dropbox sync did it) is the folio app to have! Yes, directions could have been just a bit more thorough, but after 5 minutes of tapping and trying out - all became obvious! I have now been using Foliobook for about a month and am sold on it. It was relatively easy to learn, and the videos provided by the website were great. Also, technical assistance has been outstanding. They are responsive and good at solving problems quickly. Foliobook provides a way to design your own portfolio. It is incredibly flexible and professional looking. I have been really pleased with being able to create a customized portfolio with my company logo that I can use to show my work in a professional way. For me, it provides the correct balance of customization and out of the box usefulness. As you advance through its functions you'll see that the program actually gets "out of the way" and let's you brand yourself- without imposing its presence- making it seem like a personal application. Additionally, it is important to point out that the company's customer support has always been very helpful and responsive to questions and to challenges to make the application more useful. At testament to this are the many how-to videos and step by step instructions available for those just getting started. I have been Beta testing the next update, and have found a productive dialogue with the team, and foresee greater innovations and directions for this product. The video tutorials are fantastic and walk you through how to use the app step by step, but it might help if the read-only lock was more clearly documented on the website. I presented to an agency client shortly after learning how to use it and the reception was very positive. After years of carrying a print book this was a real relief.
