## What is Cross Stitch Markup?

Written by Ursa Software, (creator of MacStitch for the Mac and WinStitch for the PC ), it is a utility designed to let you work on charts you or others have created from your iPad or iPhone (big screen recommended)

You can work without the usual array of sheets of paper and highlighting pens.
In use, you copy your charts into the iPad or iPhone using iTunes , and then when you enter Cross Stitch Markup, you can choose from those available and start stitching.

It is primarily intended to be used in conjunction with MacStitch and WinStitch, but can also read some patterns created by PCStitch (versions 4 to 7)
It is a portable alternative to printing out sheets of paper or working from PDF files.
(For your PDF charts you should use a PDF viewer application)
No ads, no in-app purchases.

What this free app will do:
Open charts (supports .CHART, .CHT, .MOTIF and some .PAT formats),
Display on screen in color/symbols/ or both
Zoom in and out, pan,
Add/remove markup so that you can see what you have done and what remains to be stitched.

(And what it won't ... :>
This is not an app to design new charts from scratch, or convert photos into charts. It is not designed to open PDF files.)

## Key features

- Open various chart formats (.CHART, .CHT, .MOTIF, .PAT)
- Display charts in color, symbols, or both
- Zoom and pan functionality
- Add/remove markup to track progress
- Portable alternative to paper charts

### 4/5 — I love MacStitch!!

*2025-11-09*

Thank you for making such awesome apps for artists!!! I love MacStitch so much, it’s indispensable for my work. and I was so excited to find out that you made a mobile app to be able to follow/mark a chart’s progress on my iPad. I do bead loom weaving and it would be awesome if you could add a feature in the app to mark a full line of stitches like in the desktop version, instead of having to mark each stitch individually.

### 2/5 — can’t get hold of support

*2023-12-14*

I have been trying to use this app. I have Mac Stitch and hoped I would be able to import charts from it to my iPad using this app but have yet to figure out how to get it to work. When I try to get hold of support through the app or web page I get errors when I hit submit. I am hoping that this will be seen and maybe they will reach out to me.

### 2/5 — Can’t upload my own patterns

*2023-08-22, version 1.40*

The description says I should be able to upload patterns that are in my files on my iPad, however the option to use my files never appears, only the files that belong to the app. I’ve been looking for an app like Pattern Keeper to put my pattern in, so I’m really disappointed that this app promises but doesn’t deliver, as there are no other reasonable pattern keeping apps for iOS

### 1/5 — Can’t import from the computer

*2023-06-01*

Try to import my pattern from winstitch and it says that it can’t because it need to be an older version for it to transfer.

### 1/5 — Upload files

*2023-01-25*

This app looks promising but not being able to open my own files kind of kills it.

### 2/5 — Absurd file location UX

*2022-03-28*

The only way to import a file is to use iTunes? Who thought that was a good idea? So I can’t use the file explorer on my iPad. I used WinStitch by the *same developer* to create a pattern on their own proprietary software, but because my pc is a windows I can’t get that pattern to open in this app so I can actually use it. Unbelievably short sighted. Would love to be able to use this app otherwise, but inane UI design choices have made this unusable. Wow.

### 5/5 — Perfect for projects on the go

*2021-11-07*

I absolutely love this app in conjunction with my WinStitch software. I hate carrying around PDF printouts and highlighters, so this is perfect - especially for large projects.

I do wish there was an option for half marks or something similar to mark parked threads, but maybe that can be added in a future update.

### 1/5 — Great idea. Wish it worked.

*2021-01-10*

I need an app to open my charts. This is obsolete. It needs to be updated.

### 4/5 — Good but some issues

*2020-08-22*

This app crashes on the title screen if opened on an iPhone. I know it’s made for iPad not iPhone but it would be nice to have the option to use it on a phone. There is no cloud syncing which along with iPhone support would make it easier to stitch in the go or in more confined spaces.

It doesn’t support adding files to the app via an iPad, you need to use a computer to add the files. Being able to open a pattern online and use the open in function to copy it to the app as well as the ability to add files via the iOS file browser would be much appreciated.

When marking a pattern there seems to be some lag, marking a large section can take quite some time as you cannot just touch and drag across the pattern as this will leave squares unchecked unless you go slowly.

It’s also missing a undo button so if you accidentally mark a line through your pattern you need to undo this manually. It would also be nice to have an option to only allow marking the currently selected floss colour to prevent you from marking the wrong squares.

I would like to see is a colour picker so you can select a square and see what floss it is.

All in all though for a free app this works quite well and makes a great companion to winstitch or macstitch.

### 5/5 — Dead good!

*2020-04-12, version 1.31*

Fantastic app to mobilise your winstitch patterns! Customer support is outstanding, as always. Very useful app, and perfect for massive projects. A*****
