Cross talk is where you speak only in a language you know very well, and your partner speaks only in the language, you are learning. It takes the focus off your output, and let you focus only on understanding your target language. I am removing one star because even when I select “Superbeginner” It is still using words slightly above my comprehension. However, when I ask it to rephrase or say something more, simply it can often help me understand without resorting to a direct translation. Sometimes after about 20 minutes in a session, the app will get stuck in a loop and not be able to continue the conversation. When that happens, I just have to close and restart. Still quite difficult for anyone with limited vocabulary or grammar, even on the “super beginner “ mode, but inline translations help. I’m an introvert so finding a native spanish speaker to convince to do crosstalk was out of the picture for me. The conversation flows naturally and I can easily understand without difficulties. The only reason this app isn’t getting 5 stars is because of a minor issue I had while trying it out today. The Ai kept repeating the same question like 4 times, even after I had answered it. I am learning Spanish with a focus on the Argentine accent and it would be cool if somehow that could be added, as well as other dialects. However, I am learning a language (Hindi in my case) so that I can have actual conversations with people and sound like a local. Not to sound like a wannabe scholar who is trying too hard using fancy words out of colloquial context. This is the only AI chat language learning app that I’ve used thus far which appears to, either via good prompting and/or a good model, talk to you somewhat like an actual (highly polite) person. ### 5/5 — Good experience *2024-07-01, version 1.56* Worked very well with crosstalk in Italian for my first use. Small comprehension errors didn’t impede the conversation. No scripted conversations. You're having a quality conversation with an AI as if you were speaking to a native speaker. What I like to do is I have a list of "ice-breaker" sentences from Google Translate in my target language of topics that I like. Then I start talking to Crosstalk exactly as if I was speaking to a native Russian speaker. Crosstalk is very good at correcting the ways I put my sentences together and explaining new words. For someone with zero experience in your language, you have the option of replying in your native language. ### 5/5 — Incredible resource for building confidence *2024-06-08, version 1.54* I was a bit skeptical at first, but within a few minutes, I was floored by how well this works. Not having native people to speak with regularly has been my biggest roadblock to fluency, but this is the best alternative. Plus, I know it can’t judge me for my accent or mistakes, so I can practice confidently. Every time I use Spanish word Sí, ap puts “see”, every time I use the word “y”, it puts an E, very frustrating.
