Back in the day Starbucks used to have these cards with promo codes to get certain paid apps for free and this was one of them. I love this crossword app. Easily the best one out there. But then they stopped supporting this one because they have a different one you can pay for and they never decommissioned this, thankfully. I do use the Hints feature on some of the harder puzzles and I really wish they’d stop using OneAcross.com which is basically just a spam ad site and now it doesn’t even give you the hints. I wish they’d support this app again, it’s the best no frills crossword app. ### 3/5 — No night mode *2023-04-02, version 2.88* This app needs night mode. ### 2/5 — Suddenly I’m seeing red *2022-03-25, version 2.88* Everything was okay. All my entries were black letters. I had errors set to hidden. Then for no reason all my entries are red. Correct and incorrect. If I set it to errors in red my entries are black if correct but now I see every wrong entry and that feels like cheating. I tried deleting and re-loading the app. It worked for about a week. Now I’m seeing red again. However, I’ve noticed that crossword providers have been shrinking and lately none of the Newsday Crosswords are available. The one issue I have are the occasional puzzles where there are apparently several letters in one box as part of the solution. There’s no way to enter that, so there’s no way to solve the puzzle. It’s rather irritating and I end up deleting them/not bothering when I come across them—it’s just not obvious at first. ### 2/5 — Quit Downloading *2021-06-11, version 2.86* I’ve had this app for a few years but it has recently quit downloading new puzzles. The gameplay, the configurability, the use of screen real estate... all best in class. Many of my favorite titles no longer seem to be available. Is anything being done to increase the supply? ### 2/5 — Stopped using it *2018-10-17, version 2.80.06* This used to be my favorite crossword app. And it has worked fairly well: I find it easier to operate than other apps. My main concern is the supply of puzzles. My favorite puzzle provider is no longer available , and for a number of the providers that I selected, I haven’t seen a new download in years. The puzzles that are still available no longer interest me, so I’ve subscribed to the NYT puzzles and use their app to work them. This one's the best by far. The daily stream of top-flight puzzles makes it well worth the price, and the interface is the best in the business - even better than the NY Times app. New review (one-star): For many months now, every other time you click on the help button the app crashes. This problem has NOT been fixed, despite many, many complaints by users. I really want this app to go back to being the best crossword app on the iPad, but as it is now I cannot recommend it to anyone. What gravity does *2021-02-06, version 2.86* The free cw from sai works for me in braille using ipad, voiceover and a braille display. Imagine my shock and horror then (eek!) when, after plunking down my ten sheckels, I find the classic version totally inaccessible. I considered suicide :) but lack the energy since I quit coffee. Please, pleas, pretty please, with sugar and spit, fix the classic version so voiceover users can use it. If not may a thousand ernes defile your windshield. I’ve been waiting months for them to fix the problem of being unable to print out the puzzles. I get a generic answer that “they are aware of the problem and working on it” but.....months??? C’mon guys, you charge a pretty steep price for an app that has no developer support. Wish I could get my money back. Won’t be downloading any more apps from Standalone, that’s for sure! ### 1/5 — This guys an idiot *2020-11-04, version 2.84* Ben whatever the heck his name is, wrote ALL the “beginner” crossword and let me tell you, a college educated woman , can’t do one of them. It is frustrating to the point of wanting to throw the whole thing out the window. I knew answers for some of these but he used obscure words and people the average person couldn’t possibly know. The UI is great as you can use left thumb on arrows to scroll through clues and it always shows both directional clues on whatever square youre on. One of the oldest apps ive owned and amazed its held up so long, just had to finally post a review! Also appreciate diff options like i enjoy the red letter mode for incorrect letters life is too short to have to wrangle a puzzle to trip over bad guesses! ### 5/5 — Great App and Great Customer Service *2021-09-14, version 2.88* I have had this app on both my iPhone and iPad for several years now and I love it. Recently the app on my iPad got messed up so I deleted it and reinstalled. The options gear was missing on the reinstall and I was unable to change the settings to my liking. I contacted Customer Service (Ben) who investigated the issue and created an update to fix it. I’m a happy Crosswords Classic geek again! ### 5/5 — My favorite app *2019-09-25, version 2.80.08* I've been using this app on an almost daily basis since the original app on my Palm PDA. The latest iOS broke the ability to send a .puz file to this app, but the developers have emailed me that they have notified Apple of the problem. Fortunately, it’s very easy to download .puz files to a Dropbox\Apps\Crossword directory on my laptop, then select Import From Dropbox to download those files to this app. By the way, I do crossword puzzles from the New York Times, LATimes, Universal, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and the Chronicle of Higher Education in this app. You can get the LATimes puzzle by signing up (free) at cruciverb.com and there are links to the other puzzles at Crosswordfiend.com/download. ### 5/5 — No more access to Telegraph or Independent *2018-08-20, version 2.80.06* As I understand it the Daily Telegraph and Independent asked Stand Alone to refrain from making their puzzles available in this app. Given that use of this app did not preclude the necessity for a subscription to the Telegraph and their total lack of support for iOS I find this a prime example of a dog in the manger attitude. Time to switch to the Times. You can get the Telegraph crossword to run in the Puffin browser but it is messy by comparison. This app was great and let’s hope that the issue, whatever it was, can be resolved.
