It. Is. Not. Free. If. it. requires. a. subscription. with. a. different. app. You are still paying a subscription fee for it. So to all the 5 star reviews saying it’s free the fact of the matter is: It’s not free okay? Okay. Now that we got out of the way. My biggest issue isn’t with subscription, but the fact that the original game that was like 5.99(or something) on the AppStore is no longer available, Period! So instead of being able to buy this game outright you now have to pay a sub to be able to play it. ### 1/5 — Stop this paid membership nonsense *2024-10-15* I’m getting really tired of this “free game but you must have a paid membership to an unrelated service to play” nonsense that is taking over the app store lately. Don’t have a crunchyroll subscription, which is ridiculous. I am a fan of Necrodancer. I am not a fan of crunchyroll. These are completely separate entities, and yet, the objectively bad entity is, for no reason, required to access the good thing. Bad business, objectively, and the executives are stupid on both Necrodancer’s side and crunchyroll’s. Boo. Now it has effectively been replaced by a subscription-locked version. Asking existing customers to pay monthly for a game they already purchased is incredibly disappointing. Meanwhile, on Steam, this game is still simple “buy once, own forever”. The game itself is fantastic. To the people complaining that it’s locked behind a subscription this is not the first time this has happened just look at Netflix it’s the exact same thing Crunchy Roll isn’t the first. To the reviews that say this should be free just no! It! Should! NOT! The developers deserve to be paid for the love and effort they put into this game! I fully believe that having a way that the developers get paid that doesn’t shove adds or micro transactions in your face every two seconds makes this a far better experience in all respects! The only real criticism that I have for this game is it doesn’t support the backbone controller and while I can connect a controller via Bluetooth like a DS4/Dual Sense and an Xbox controller it isn’t as convenient to do so. And I don’t know why the Backbone is not compatible with this game. This game’s just free with said anime service. It’s not meant to be something you just get on its own, it’s on here because Crunchyroll’s giving the game to its subscribers for free, same with how Netflix is giving its subscribers great games like Hades, Wonderputt, Kentucky Route Zero, Before Your Eyes, IMMORTALITY (a masterpiece btw), etc. Come on guys, this is a really dumb reason to leave a one-star.
