## What is Cryptogram Cipher?

Some messages belong between the two of you.

A settlement proposal. A tip for an investigation. A conversation about health. Cryptogramm encrypts sensitive texts on your iPhone. You share the block of characters by chat or e-mail.

FOR LAWYERS
At an appointment in your office, you and your client set up your shared key. From then on, your client sends their view on a settlement as an encrypted block of characters by e-mail. You open it in Cryptogramm.

FOR JOURNALISTS
A source encrypts their tip before sending it. A short meeting point they leave on an agreed NFC sticker – with an expiry time, or readable only once on an NTAG 424 DNA. You can share locations in encrypted form too.

FOR EVERYDAY LIFE
You discuss your parents' care with your sister, or send your partner the access code for the holiday flat. Encrypt the text and share it over the channel you trust. Short notes you leave on an NFC sticker for later pickup.

THE LOCKED NFC DEAD DROP
Besides ordinary NFC stickers, Cryptogramm supports the NTAG 424 DNA. It releases its content only after authentication with the matching key. A stranger's phone does not even see the encrypted text there.

The app sets up a new NTAG 424 DNA the first time you write to it, in the same tap. With a different key it stops without changing the tag. Resetting with the matching key wipes the tag completely and turns it back into an ordinary sticker.

READABLE ONCE ONLY
On the NTAG 424 DNA the chip itself enforces the single read: it counts the pickup and prevents the message from being opened again afterwards – even by you. Simply tapping it with a stranger's phone does not use up the single read.

About 250 characters fit into an ordinary message, about 108 into one that is readable once only. The label and the sender take up part of that. The input field shows how much still fits.

MESSAGES WITH AN EXPIRY TIME
One hour, one day, one week, 30 days or an exact moment: you decide how long a message stays readable in the dead drop. The expiry time is encrypted along with it. Cryptogramm no longer shows expired messages and overwrites them when they are read. Can be combined with reading once only.

SHARE AND BACK UP KEYS
Hand over your shared key by QR code, AirDrop or link. The link opens Cryptogramm on the other iPhone and asks for the one-time code. Send that code separately, by a different route.

The key passport backs up your key on a folded A5 card – also for a lost phone or an emergency wipe. Keep it in a safe: it is as valuable as the key itself.

EMERGENCY WIPE AS A SHORTCUT
Delete your local keys without confirmation and without opening the app: with the Action button, a double tap on the back of the phone or an automation.

PRIVACY AND EU CHAT CONTROL
The EU interim regulation allows certain providers, under conditions, to carry out voluntary checks to combat child sexual abuse. It applies until 3 April 2028; end-to-end encrypted communication is exempt. The permanent regulation is still being negotiated. As of October 2026.

Optical paper codes can be copied by hand and read with the camera. Encrypting and decrypting also work in airplane mode.

NO ACCOUNT. NO SUBSCRIPTION.
Access with Face ID or the device passcode. Locally protected keys, fixed deletion deadlines, no provider servers, no ads, no tracking. Nine languages, now including Russian.

GOOD TO KNOW
Both of you need the app and the same key. Who communicates with whom and when remains visible to the messenger. A key obtained later can open older ordinary messages. Deliberately reading the tag with an NFC app can make a once-only message unreadable without decrypting it. Reading once only does not prevent copies at the moment of pickup. Without the key it was set up with, an NTAG 424 DNA stays locked for good.

Buy once. Give what's private the protection it deserves.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-10-02

Cryptogramm 1.2 – what’s new

LOCKED DEAD DROP WITH NTAG 424 DNA
Besides ordinary NFC stickers (NTAG213/215/216), you can now choose the NTAG 424 DNA as a dead drop. It hands out the message only after an AES authentication. A stranger’s phone sees nothing there – not even the ciphertext.
• One button for everything: a factory-new tag is set up for your key the first time you tap “Write to NFC tag”, in the same tap. If the tag belongs to a different key, the app stops without changing anything.
• Reset: with your key, the tag is wiped completely and becomes an ordinary sticker again. Without the key this is impossible. If the key is lost, the tag stays locked forever.
• The input field shows how many characters fit on the tag: about 250 for an ordinary message.

READABLE ONCE ONLY
On the NTAG 424 DNA a message can be left so that it opens exactly once – and never again, not even for you. The chip counts the pickup, and the message is bound to that one time. The chip enforces this, not the app.
• Room for about 108 characters.
• Simply tapping the tag with a stranger’s phone does not use up the one read.
• Anyone who deliberately reads the tag with an NFC app makes the message unreadable, but cannot read it.

MESSAGE SELF-DESTRUCT
Messages in the dead drop can get an expiry time: one hour, one day, one week, 30 days or an exact moment. The time is encrypted inside the message; from the outside nobody can see when anything expires. Once it has passed, the app shows nothing and overwrites the sticker. Can be combined with “Readable once only”: the message is gone as soon as it has been read or has expired.

HAND OVER KEYS BY LINK
Besides QR code and AirDrop, a key can now be sent as a link. The link opens Cryptogramm on the other iPhone and asks for the one-time code there. Without that code the link is worthless – so send it separately, by a different route.

KEY PASSPORT
A folded A5 card for your own records. A key survives on it even when the phone does not: after an emergency wipe, after loss, after seizure. The passport is worth as much as the key itself and belongs in a safe, not in your wallet.

EMERGENCY WIPE AS A SHORTCUT
The emergency wipe is now available in the Shortcuts app. It runs in the background, without confirmation and without opening the app – for example on the Action button, with a double tap on the back of the phone, or in an automation when you leave a place. Siri and Spotlight deliberately do not suggest it.

RUSSIAN
Cryptogramm now speaks Russian – the ninth language alongside German, English, Spanish, French, Norwegian, Polish, Swedish and Ukrainian.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-16

Version 1.1 brings more scripts into the code, more control over your keys and a more serious take on the worst case.

SCRIPT
• Cyrillic in the optical code and at the dead drop – Ukrainian and Russian. Until now such characters silently turned into question marks.
• The app now warns about characters it cannot render, before the code is created – instead of the recipient finding out.

KEYS
• Choose which key encrypts right where you write – in Message, Create and at the dead drop.
• Hand a key over by NFC tag or as a file over AirDrop; until now there were only QR codes and print-outs.
• A three-word fingerprint to read aloud: so you know you both really hold the same key.
• Self-destruct at an exact date and time. Once fixed it can no longer be moved or revoked – and it deletes without replacement, no other key moves up.

WORST CASE
• Emergency wipe without confirmation: press anywhere on the lock screen for three seconds. No visible change, just a short pulse in your hand.
• The screen dims during the NFC operation so it draws less attention.

DEAD DROP
• Messages up to 900 characters instead of 200.
• An encrypted sender name – the recipient knows who left something. It never appears in the clear on the tag.
• The Control Center button now really opens the reader.

ALSO
• Send your location encrypted.
• Links in decrypted messages are tappable.
• The share sheet now offers encrypting as well, not just decrypting.
• Blank print template as an A4 sheet with four message cards.
