Gifted screenings don't test what a child has memorized. They test how a child reasons. Cub Climb builds that reasoning, a few short puzzles at a time, for children from kindergarten to grade 5 (ages 5 to 11). Up to grade 2, every puzzle is pictures, and the cub reads it aloud.
WHAT IT COVERS
The CogAT, CCAT-7, OLSAT 8 and NNAT 3 are the gifted tests North American schools use from kindergarten to grade 5, and CAT4 is their English equivalent. They all measure the same three kinds of reasoning: verbal, quantitative and non-verbal. Cub Climb has nine original reasoning puzzle types across all three, including analogies, number series, figure matrices and paper folding.
WHAT YOU'RE GETTING
Over 4,200 original reasoning puzzles:
- Kindergarten to grade 2: over 2,000 picture puzzles, about 680 a grade
- Grades 3 to 5: over 2,200, about 735 a grade (verbal 680, quantitative 900, non-verbal 623)
Your child isn't meant to finish them all. Ten to twenty minutes a few times a week is plenty. The size is there so practice stays fresh from the first week to test day.
ANSWER, THEN SHOW WHY
Most practice stops at the right answer. Cub Climb asks one more question: why? Getting the answer earns one star. Showing why earns the second, so the thinking was really there, not just a lucky pick.
- Grades 3 to 5: your child names the rule behind the answer
- Kindergarten to grade 2: no reading needed. Your child finds another pair of pictures that works the same way, or says yes or no to the cub's reasons, and the cub says the rule out loud
PRACTICE THAT FOLLOWS YOUR CHILD
- Each skill starts just below your child's grade and finds their level in a few puzzles
- Three in a row, rule and all, brings harder puzzles; a miss brings easier ones, up to a grade ahead
- A missed puzzle comes back a day later, then after 3, 8, 20 and 50 days, further apart each time it's remembered
- A lucky guess isn't counted as learned, and a careless slip isn't counted as a gap
- Up to four children on one device, each with their own climb, at no extra cost
- A short summary after each set shows right answers, the whys, and whether your child rushed
TEST DAY, WHEN YOU'RE READY
Pick the test your child is sitting: CogAT, CCAT-7, OLSAT or NNAT. Its puzzles come first. With the full version, turn on Test day in the grown-ups' area for a timed set in that test's mix: 18 CogAT or CCAT-7 questions in 9 minutes, at the test's own pace of about 30 seconds a question. Skip, flag and come back, then see every answer explained. Everyday practice is never timed, and there's no score.
MORE THAN A WORKSHEET
- Watch the rule: once your child finds it, number and picture puzzles play their logic through, step by step
- Spot the cub's mistake: halfway through a set, the cub tries a puzzle your child solved, and your child checks its answer
- A puzzle friend for every skill, who hatches, grows and earns a crown as your child climbs
- A flag on the summit when your child reaches the top of a grade, and it stays planted
- Stump a grown-up: at the top, the hardest puzzle your child solved, for you to try
