## What is Cued Articulation?

Cued Articulation is a set of hand cues for teaching the individual sounds in a word. It is useful for speech pathologists, speech and language therapists, remedial and recovery teachers and primary teachers in the classroom. 

The hand movements are logical – each hand movement represents one sound and the cue gives clues as to how and where the sound is produced. Colour coding is also used to indicate the consonant sounds represented by the written letters.

Jane Passy devised the cues while working as a Speech Pathologist with a group of children with severe speech and language problems. These children had problems in auditory recall and needed a visual aid to learning. Teachers found that using the cues not only helped the children with difficulties, but it also raised the sound awareness skills of everyone in the class. Jane developed the system to include 26 consonants and 23 vowel cues.

This app is intended as a handy reminder of how each of the cues is made, and how it relates to the sound it represents and the letters that spell that sound. Using interactive consonant, vowel and diphthong tables, the app displays video cues of each sound, as well as an animated illustration of the mouth and throat while producing the sounds. It includes the colour coding that is central to the program, and provides examples of each sound within everyday words. The app is an extra resource to the suite of Cued Articulation materials produced by ACER Press. 

It is recommended that users have the underlying knowledge of sounds and the sound system of English. A full Cued Articulation course is recommended. See:

I have no idea what another review is talking about, because the app is divided in to separate tabs- 1 tab for consonants and 1 tab for vowels, but  if you tap on each sound displayed on the screen, it will actually pull up a screen that then has two options to click on/view for that sound -one of the cue for that sound being modeled in a video clip, and that same sound being shown in a graphic model representing how that sound is formed with the tongue and other articulators. The video clips of the cues are helpful so that you can learn them and teach these to students to help them use a simple visual cue to remember how a particular sound is formed. Some students, especially ones with auditory recall issues,  are visual learners - this is just one strategy to help students with their speech sounds.  The only thing I would like to change is if the models of each sound also included a frontal view, instead of just viewing inside the mouth from a side view. I think it would be helpful for students to see both views.  Either way, I am glad to have this and consider it a good resource for cued speech.

I downloaded it for my son and I realise that there is no sound for the price that you're paying you should get sound or it should be tested thoroughly so once it's released everything works correctly very disappointed.

I really enjoy this app as a teacher but find it frustrating I paid $43 and cannot access the information without the internet. Please make this app as offline. It is ridiculous I need to download the videos every time.

This app, does exactly what it sets out to do. All the letter sound cues are clearly demonstrated. They are easy to learn and help children with auditory processing difficulties to "see" the difference between similarly sounding, paired voiced and unvoiced letter sounds e.g. /t/ & /d/or /p/ & /b/. One boy I taught recently could not distinguish between between /k/ & /g/, until I taught him the cues for both. Some children also need to place their other hand on their throat so that they feel the difference in their voice boxes too. Once they understand the difference, they are able to use the cues in noisy, busy environments to aid their  "hearing", speech & spelling. I wish I had known about this tool years ago.
