### 3/5 — Poor app, needs fixing but persevere...

*2020-09-02, version 2.0*

This app at first had only some free 2015 issues.
Then I cancelled the downloads, and restarted the app.
Now it shows me the august 2020 issues.

### 4/5 — Don’t believe the 1 and 2 star reviews

*2019-10-24*

Yes, this app hasn’t been updated for 4 years, but it works perfectly on my XR. Yes, the initial setup screen is annoyingly slow (it has taken about 5 minutes to finish), and yes it has current articles (again you need to wait an excessive amount of time to have them download) but overall it is a great app. They do need to update and make the process faster but you do get everything.

### 1/5 — Why can’t you just use your website like everyone else?

*2019-04-06*

Seriously. It’s annoying. Everyone wants me to put THEIR app on my phone. Something like this is not the right place for an application. It does nothing for me. Can you write Objective C or Swift but not HTML? Do you need a web developer? Or maybe a copy of Adobe Acrobat or a link to LibreOffice so you can make a PDF of the magazine you want to make available on your website? It’s not rocket science.

Please be like every other news outlet and use your friggin website instead of making people download YET ANOTHER REDUNDANT APP.

### 3/5 — Great for iPad, needs to be updated for newer iPhones...

*2019-03-31*

I love the Cult of Mac podcast. I also love this app on my iPad. The content is great, it’s always up to date. The format of scrolling between magazines and articles is very fluid and user friendly.
This would easily be a 5 star app...but I am baffled that it is not updated for the new iPhones. Im reading reviews and articles on my iPhone Xs Max, and it’s like reading it on an iPhone 8 Plus with the bars on top and bottom.

Update the app, and I’ll absolutely add those 2 stars and update the review. Outside of that, keep up the outstanding work!!

### 1/5 — Update?

*2019-03-25*

I downloaded this because it was advertised in a story from Cult of Mac...the app isn’t updated to utilize the full screen of the XS Max. It’s been out long enough. Get with the program.

### 1/5 — It’s just a blank white screen

*2019-01-27, version 2.0*

How do you guys make any money?

### 4/5 — Updated! Not old just very slow to initialise.

*2019-01-13, version 2.0*

This was my first experience of this app:

Oh dear. Downloaded this app after following a link on the news app. The most recent issue here deals with the iPhone 6s FFS. What's going on, eh? A nice archive but useless for newer updates. Uninstalled.

Luckily I did not uninstall it, as I went back in one last time and log! All the issues are now there and up to date. It seems the app, when first installed, doesn't show the newest edition first. You have to wait until the entire catalogue has downloaded.

Once it has you can read the mag. I had an initial problem which, while scrolling through a story, every time it came to a picture or graphic it made it full screen. Turns out there's a "feature" called autozoom which is turned on by default. I found it horrible and annoying but once off everything worked as expected.

### 1/5 — Rubbish

*2019-01-13, version 2.0*

Doesn’t work , downloaded the app , then nothing😢

### 1/5 — Doesn’t update issues

*2018-12-01*

Has some issues from 3 years ago. New ones won’t load

### 1/5 — Doesn’t update

*2018-11-20*

Latest issue has been out over a week and I STILL can’t read it. Please UPDATE

### 3/5 — A case study for bad UI and UX

*2018-11-11, version 2.0*

Unlike the website, which resembles most popular news sites, the app is more like a first semester university students work.

Having to wait several minutes for content to download, which I assume is because the app is downloading entire magazines, or the horizontal scrolling with huge amounts of vacant screen real estate around it, or the background that animates resembling popular styles from early iOS apps from 2008/09, its overall a poor UI and poor UX.

What the app gets right is the article display. It looks and feels like most other news and blog apps, which partially alleviates the poor user experience received prior.

The app prior to display of articles could be significantly improved with the “less is more” approach; use a table view or collection view to show weekly magazine issues with just their date, title and other essential information rather than downloading entire issues first; it would consume less server resources serving up just the essential information and significantly improve the UX by making the app feel faster.

Likewise with the display of articles in the selected issue, just display the essential information relevant to the article in a collection view like the native Apple News app instead of forcing a wait time for information I may not even use to download.

Finally, follow the Human User Interface Guidelines and use native navigation features such as UINavigationController and UITabBarControllers.

The content is always good. But content dedicated to Apple products is not done justice when displayed in non-Apple-esque (or to be more accurate, decade old) style. Hope this helps the developers.

### 1/5 — A ‘Cult of Mac’ app that’s not updated for the iPhone X? Seriously?!?

*2018-10-27*

Does not make use of the iPhone X display. The X has been around for a year now. It seems this app hasn’t been updated in 3 years, and it shows. The design looks dated. Kind of embarrassing.

### 1/5 — iPhone XS Max

*2018-10-25, version 2.0*

This is a magazine about Apple. Shouldn’t they update to support Apple’s latest flagship device (iPhone Xs Max)?

### 1/5 — RIP

*2018-10-15, version 2.0*

May as well be removed. Looks shocking, loads terrible and it’s been forgotten. In the running for the worst tech magazine app in the App Store.

### 2/5 — Sorry, i’m not interested in a bunch of ads

*2018-04-27*

I can get the same information on other sites without requiring me to accept all of the ads.

### 1/5 — Pointless App

*2017-09-23*

Why bother downloading the app when it’s “magazine” is just filled with links that redirect you to the Cult of Mac site?

### 1/5 — Pain

*2017-01-26, version 2.0*

I open this app every day with the same problem. It shows me every day one mistake which i don`t understand. It`s impossible!

### 4/5 — Very nice

*2016-09-24*

We can't have enough like this :)

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Is this a joke?

*2021-03-20, version 2.0*

An article on their site (from today) linked to this app advising the latest issue was free. App was last updated 5 (!) years ago and the latest issue on it is from August 2015! Deleted.

### 1/5 — Old App that I can’t cancel the subscription to for $83.88

*2021-01-13, version 2.0*

I used to enjoy Cult of Mac, but this has been neglected and it keeps resubscribing me. There is no way to get rid of it. No one will read this anyway.

### 1/5 — doesn’t work..

*2020-10-25*

A recent article linked to this app and said “read for free on our app”

A few sample “free” issues from 2015 show up (cover page only). then app sits spinning / loading forever. will delete app soon as i finish writing this.

app is stale / updated last over 5 years ago. should be pulled off the app store!

### 1/5 — The Dev Team Has Moved On

*2020-09-12*

Weird how online articles still reference the app, but humorously, the app hasn’t been updated since 2016.

If it were 2016, I would give this app a solid 3 stars.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2020-07-23, version 2.0*

The issues that show up are all from 2015.

### 1/5 — Love cult of Mac but this is dead!

*2020-05-31, version 2.0*

Why link to a dead app? Last updated ages ago. Please pull from App Store or update to work with current content

### 1/5 — Initial setup angst

*2019-10-13*

Difficult to write a review when the app gets seemingly stuck on the ‘initial setup’ white screen for several minutes. When all of a sudden, the cover of an issue appears. Great I think, but wait, why does it look weird... oh, that’s right, it’s an issue from 2015. That’s right, 2015.

Not sure I have much else to comment at this point. Other than, huh, seriously?

### 1/5 — Latest available copy 2015????

*2019-08-03, version 2.0*

Why is this still in the App Store and still advertising on Apple News?
I presume that the ‘free edition’ which they show and which appears to be up to date is downloaded from some miscellaneous server, somewhere, but:
1. That isn’t clear
2. I’m not going there, thank you very much.
Frustrating....

### 1/5 — It’s not optimized for iPhone X

*2019-06-30*

It’s not up to much for iPhone X and when I load the app it only shows me 103 which is the last copy and the website says right now we’re on 303

### 1/5 — Love it

*2019-06-16, version 2.0*

No problems here. Give the app time to download all the content and read away.
Thanks Cult of Mac!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Please continue the cult of Mac magazine

*2026-05-23, version 2.0*

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

### 5/5 — Immersive and informative

*2021-03-08*

As a Cult of Mac fan for several years using Safari I was curious to see what an iPad app version would look like on the M1 Air. This app gives the reader a very immersive and detailed view of the articles without any of the headaches of unwanted ads and other things on Safari. The stories have high quality photos that you can view in full screen. I am very happy with the way this app works across all my devices. It is also a much better reading experince than the Safari version of the articles.

### 5/5 — I think the app is great

*2016-04-15*

I don't get the beef on these reviews. But I guess if you read the comments on Cult of Mac it makes sense. We're some of the most passionate and opinionated readers out there.

Despite being a loyal Cult of Mac reader who falls into this category I think the app is great. And I obviously love the content.

### 5/5 — iPad-optimized app for Apple news

*2016-04-15*

This app serves up a weekly roundup of the best news and features (including how-tos, tips and product reviews) from Apple news website Cult of Mac.

### 5/5 — Great

*2016-04-15*

Superb content from a staff of Apple experts who also keep it fun. This mag is the perfect way to catch up on all the important Apple news.

### 5/5 — Good magazine

*2015-12-24, version 2.0*

I once met Leander Kahney; he smells like cabbages and has thrice denied me a handshake. Probably for the best however as he was holding a Stella on each occasion...

### 5/5 — Great app

*2015-09-26, version 2.0*

Love this magazine!

### 5/5 — Great Mag

*2014-04-30, version 1.2*

Great insight into all things Apple, well written in a good punchy format. Recommended reading if you like & use Apple products

### 5/5 — First timer

*2014-04-19, version 1.2*

My first downloaded issue -- and for .99¢ ! -- for me it is right on the mark! On a score of 1 to 10 you get a 9.9 -- Thanks. I intend to read further issues !

### 5/5 — Informative

*2013-10-13, version 1.1*

I am not one to write reviews, but I feel like I must for this. At $0.99 per issue (4 issues/month) OR $1.99/month it's almost impossible to pass this up. It's not your traditional magazine with pages and pages of ads and other nonsense. It seems to be between 5-10 articles, all of which are written with great input. Thoughtful, useful and informative writing. I LOVE the Genius Bar section in each issue. It gives you an inside look of the thought process, a very compelling read. I am truly enjoying. Well worth the $1.99/month.
