I really can’t praise it enough. But I have one frustration after about two months of use: the app is very inflexible about what it considers a correct answer. For example, it asks for ‘east’ and presents you with several different characters to choose from or combine. If you enter 東方, which is a perfectly valid translation of ‘east’, the app marks it wrong because it was expecting just the character 東. Part of the problem is that it doesn’t tell you when it wants a character and when it wants a word. But it’s also inflexible about requiring 兒: for example it marks 好玩 incorrect when expecting 好玩兒. You simply have to remember which variant the app is expecting, which isn’t really the point of why I want to use the app: I want to learn the language rather than trying to memorize which synonym or variant the app expects. This makes the whole process, which is otherwise excellent, quite frustrating, and leads me to have to review cards I already know well. All in all this is a superb app, and I look forward to using it again after this issue is addressed! ### 4/5 — Impressively Clean UI, More Features Would Be Nice *2025-10-29* VERY clean app. That alone makes it so nice to use compared to many others. I have 4 stars simply because it’s not very customizable right now even with the (relatively not expensive, single time payment of $7) premium. Here are some thoughts. 1) Id like to be able to see all the words I know and edit their stats. Sometimes I accidentally mark a word as known. 2) The non-flashcard questions provide too much information in my opinion. Each word has pinyin, characters, and definition. Of these 3, the questions always show two of them and leave only one on the back. Id much prefer only one on the front and two on the back (or even better, one on the back as well as the front), or to make possible to enable this. Until this is added, I unfortunately can only use the flashcards as getting, personally, getting two of the aforementioned characteristics means I can almost always guess the third, even if I don’t know it. 3) Reverse flash cards would lovely 4) Id like be able to do ALL my due questions in one without having to click on each deck individually. **Developer response:** Thank you so much for checking out the app and for sharing your review. Hulu is cheaper than that. AI word definitions and sample sentences are a really handy touch, genuinely find that useful, saves switching to a dictionary every five seconds for reference. Only complaint i have that would actually stop me using soon is not being able to review cards at all when offline. Mainly use when commuting via train / bus and internet is spotty at best so that drags the experience down a fair bit. But when it works, it's lovely. (i'd also ask if it can show how many cards are left to review when you main cards are done for the day somewhere in tiny writing, not just shortly displaying it as a short note after you finish learning / reviewing the main set but that would be nit picking) ### 5/5 — Great app *2025-03-02, version 10.2.0* Great app very useful. I think it’s meant to help build vocab rather than teach new words, since sometimes the word description isn’t enough to actually understand it. I think that’s fine though since it’s really easy to just do some research if it’s unclear. One suggestion would be a toggle for example sentences although that might be tedious to implement. Many categories to choose from, daily reminders, customizable goals, and thorough definitions and examples for each word and insights even into the etymology and breakdown of the characters. I don’t want a subscription, and certainly not for flashcards. I would be OK with buying the packs, but subscribing to them is not the right business model. If you need the reoccurring revenue, there needs to be reoccurring content. Some simple Chinese stories based on the pack would be fine, a podcast, or even access to a study group are all better choices. ### 2/5 — Now I Have To Pay? *2023-09-01* I’ve been using this app for half a year to re-learn mandarin, and up until the recent update I have loved it, it has been perfect. Simple, easy to use, and most importantly, it didn’t cost money to open all reviews at once. I was very excited when I got the email about the update that included new HSK as I would be able to continue learning. In the email itself it never mentioned that one of the best features of this app, the ability to open as many reviews as there are packs, which has been free, is now something I will have to pay for if I wish to add any new vocabulary packs, or I will have to forfeit all of my progress so far. If you wished to do a subscription service, you should have added a new feature (such as the ability to combine all review words into one review), instead of locking a feature that had formerly been free behind a paywall. Because of this, I will no longer be able to use your app the way I have been, which is incredibly unfortunate for me. Even if, perhaps, new vocabulary packs cost a small, one time fee, that would be better than this, and I would have paid for those. These changes are a bit too much, especially when the email did not make clear that this “new feature” would be paid. I give two stars because I have gotten such great use of this app in the past, but the most important part of this app, for me, is no longer available, so I cannot rate higher. On day 7 it showed me a word that was 100% mispronounced ! So I asked a native speaking person to read the Chinese character and listen to the pronunciation . They came back with the same result I had, the app is not pronouncing the word correctly. On the plus side. This app shows the Chinese character in a very large font so the person learning can actually study what it looks like. One other Chinese learning app I am using - the font is so tiny the character is too hard to see ! Unlike all these gamified language learning apps where you can have a hundreds of days streak and still learn nothing, this app is simple, pleasant to use, and very effective. The decks are also extremely well organized; I started as a total beginner and after studying the “Road to Mastery” sequence for almost 1 year, I have enough of a working vocabulary to get through any intermediate conversation, as well as books, shows, etc. If I had any suggestion, I would like to be able to use the app offline.
