## What is Daily Light?

Experience a Deeper Connection with God, Every Single Day.

Welcome to Daily Light, your daily companion for spiritual growth, reflection, and action. Designed specifically to align with the Christian calendar, this app moves beyond simple reading—it invites you to live out your faith through a structured, thoughtful daily rhythm.

A Daily Journey Through the Word
Every day, Daily Light provides a curated experience designed to nourish your soul and sharpen your mind:

The Reading: A scripture selection chosen to align with the liturgical season and the Christian calendar.

Today's Theme: A daily reflection that connects the reading to the challenges and joys of modern life.

Practices & Actions: Three specific, actionable practices to turn the morning's reflection into real-world impact.

Daily Prayer: A beautifully written prayer to centre your heart before you start your day.

Listen to Every Word
NEW. Tap "Listen" at the top of any reading to hear it read aloud in a warm, natural voice. Daily Light gently highlights each word as it's spoken—perfect when your eyes are tired, you want to pray hands-free, or you're sharing the moment with someone else. A floating player lets you pause or adjust the speed any time. Available throughout the app—daily readings, Compline, Bible chapters, and themed verses.

Reflect Daily with Father Peter
Visit the Reflect tab for short, warm-hearted video reflections from Father Peter Greenfield, curate at All Saints' Parish Church, Carshalton. Father Peter publishes a "Reflect on Lect" video most days, walking you through the day's lectionary reading with gentle pastoral insight. Videos play inside the app and update automatically as new ones are published.

End the Day with Compline
NEW. A traditional night prayer service—psalm, short scripture, and the Song of Simeon—is now one tap away at the bottom of every reading. Compline quietly rotates through the liturgical year, offering different psalms and readings for Advent, Lent, Easter, and the seasons in between. A peaceful close to any day.

The Whole Bible, Always With You
NEW. Tap the book icon in the corner of Today to open the Bible inside Daily Light. Twelve "When You Need…" shortcuts gather hand-picked verses for the moments that matter—Strength, Hope, Healing, Comfort, Guidance, Forgiveness, Patience, Anxiety, Gratitude, Wisdom, Joy, and Peace. Browse any book chapter by chapter, or use full-text search to find any verse instantly. Switch between the modern Berean Standard Bible and the traditional King James Version with one tap. Both bundled fully offline.

Personalised for Your Life
Never Miss a Day: Set custom daily notifications to build a consistent habit of prayer and study.

Save Your Favourites: Save readings or prayers that resonate to revisit whenever you need a spiritual boost.

Accessibility Matters: A dedicated text size slider enlarges the font for comfortable reading.

Light & Dark Mode: The app adjusts to your environment, morning or evening.

Why Choose Daily Light?
In a busy world, scripture can become a "check-box" activity. Daily Light is designed to change that. By providing not just the Word, but also a theme, three practical actions, daily video reflections from a parish priest, the complete Bible at your fingertips, and a calm night office to close the day, we bridge the gap between reading scripture and living the Gospel. Whether you are a lifelong believer or just beginning your faith journey, this app offers the structure and inspiration you need to grow.

Download Daily Light today and start walking closer with God, one day at a time.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 3 — 2026-05-11

added additional YouTube feeds with all services as a separate option within the watch section.

### 2.1 — 2026-05-05

We've added three new offline features: a Compline (night prayer) service drawn from public-domain liturgical sources and KJV scripture; a full Bible reader bundling the Berean Standard Bible (free for any use, see https://bereanbible.com/licensing.html) and the King James Version (public domain) all offline; and a "Listen" feature using Apple's AVSpeechSynthesizer to read content aloud with word-by-word highlighting. The Bible text rendering selects between bundled translations via a Settings toggle. Voice selection for the read-aloud feature is fully automatic — Daily Light picks the best installed iOS voice (preferring Daniel en-GB) with no user setup required. No new network calls beyond v1.1's YouTube RSS feed for the Reflect tab.

### 2.0 — 2026-04-27

Daily Light v1.1 introduces a new "Reflect" tab containing video reflections from a public YouTube channel: All Saints' Parish Church, Carshalton (channel ID UCzMJMMNcgI0BzL8897aN98w). Father Peter Greenfield, the curate, publishes daily lectionary reflection videos titled "Reflect on Lect…", and this tab surfaces them inside the app for the app's elderly Christian audience.

Implementation summary:

Video discovery uses the channel's free public RSS feed (https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=...). No API key, no authentication, no quota. The XML is parsed, filtered to titles containing "Reflect" (so non-reflection content like Sunday masses doesn't appear), and cached locally in SwiftData. The list still works offline once seeded.
Video playback uses Apple's SFSafariViewController loading the standard YouTube watch URL (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…). We deliberately avoided WKWebView with the /embed/ URL because Google's licence server reliably rejects third-party in-app embeds with errors 152/153 since 2024. SFSafariViewController is presented as a sheet — the user never leaves Daily Light, never sees the YouTube app, and dismisses with "Done" back to the Reflect tab.
The app continues to make zero first-party network calls for its core daily readings — those remain bundled offline. The only network activity is the RSS fetch and the YouTube playback session, both clearly scoped to the Reflect feature.
The app collects no personal data, has no accounts, no analytics, no IAP, and no advertising. The only third-party data collection is what YouTube performs during embedded video playback — disclosed in the App Privacy questionnaire.
Test instructions: launch the app, tap the new "Reflect" tab (5th tab between Calendar and Favourites). The list of Father Peter's videos should populate within a second. Tap any card to watch — the video plays inside an in-app SFSafariViewController sheet. Tap "Done" to return to the list. The "New from Father Peter" tile also appears on the Today tab below the day's prayer when a video has been published in the last 7 days.
