## What is Danki Kanji?

The complete Japanese study app built because the alternatives were not enough.

Master kana, all 2,136 Joyo kanji, 8,513 JLPT vocabulary words, and 480 grammar patterns from N5 through N1. Learn with real sentences, natural audio, visual memory cues, animated stroke order, and modern spaced repetition. No games, no gimmicks - just effective Japanese learning.

- ONE CONNECTED JAPANESE COURSE
Study kana, kanji, vocabulary, and grammar in one app. Move from characters to real words and sentences without splitting your progress across separate tools.

- COMPLETE KANA AND KANJI
Learn hiragana and katakana, then study all 2,136 Joyo kanji with meanings, readings, radicals, memorable stories, vocabulary, example sentences, and Japanese stroke-order animations.

- 8,513 JLPT VOCABULARY WORDS
Build practical vocabulary from N5 through N1 with readings, definitions, pitch accent when available, thousands of hand-reviewed images, and more than 8,200 Japanese and English example sentence pairs.

- FOUR VOCABULARY RECALL SKILLS
Practice reading vocabulary, reading kanji inside words, recalling hiragana from English, or recalling kanji from English. Each skill has independent progress and scheduling, so study targets what you actually need to improve.

- 480 GRAMMAR PATTERNS
Study complete JLPT grammar from N5 through N1 with clear meanings, readings, formation guidance, notes, and more than 1,500 Japanese and English examples.

- NATURAL AUDIO
Hear Japanese readings, vocabulary, grammar, and example sentences. English audio supports meaning and listening practice, and bundled media works without waiting for a network connection.

- FSRS SPACED REPETITION
A modern scheduling algorithm returns each card when review is most useful for long-term retention. Rate Again, Hard, Good, or Easy, mark material Known or Skipped, and resume an interrupted daily session without losing progress.

- READING HELP ON YOUR TERMS
Show furigana, hide it for a challenge, or reveal a reading with a tap only when you need help. Tap unfamiliar kanji in vocabulary and sentences to open details and study metrics.

- CORRECT JAPANESE STROKE ORDER
Watch crisp KanjiVG animations for all kanji, hiragana, and katakana. Learn the forms used in Japanese, including characters whose regional Chinese forms differ.

- LIBRARIES AND PROGRESS
Browse kana, kanji, vocabulary, and grammar libraries. Search, filter, inspect learning history, track a daily goal, and see reports for recent reviews and long-term growth.

- HANDS FREE, WIDGETS, AND APPLE WATCH
Study continuously with Hands Free audio and voice ratings, fit quick reviews into the day with interactive Home Screen widgets, and keep learning from your wrist.

- BUILT-IN STUDY TOOLS
Flag difficult cards, bookmark vocabulary, compare similar kanji, replay audio, undo recent actions, and switch between Quiz and Review modes.

Built by one developer who uses it every day. No VC funding, no dark patterns - just the Japanese study tool I wished existed.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### v1.4.0 — 2026-08-12

ONE COMPLETE JAPANESE APP
Danki now brings kana, kanji, vocabulary, and grammar together. Move naturally from a character to the words, sentences, and grammar that use it without switching apps. Compatible progress and preferences from the focused Danki apps carry forward.

TRAIN FOUR VOCABULARY SKILLS
Recognizing a word is not the same as producing it. Practice four independently scheduled skills:
- Read vocabulary with furigana and recall its meaning
- Read a target kanji inside a word
- Recall a Japanese word in hiragana from English
- Recall each target kanji in a word from English

REVIEWS THAT WAIT FOR YOU
Daily-review sessions now survive navigation, app restarts, and interruptions. Completed ratings remain saved and the remaining queue is restored, so short study sessions are always worthwhile.

READ WITHOUT GIVING AWAY THE ANSWER
Vocabulary and grammar now place furigana directly above the kanji. Hide it for a real reading challenge, reveal it with a tap when needed, and tap unfamiliar kanji to open details and study metrics.

PRACTICE CORRECT JAPANESE FORMS
All 2,136 kanji plus hiragana and katakana now use crisp KanjiVG vector animations designed for Japanese forms and stroke order. Chinese study retains its own regional AnimCJK data.

A CONSIDERABLY SMALLER APP
Optimized audio and thousands of more efficient vocabulary images make Danki faster to download and install, lighter on storage, and quicker to load study media without sacrificing clarity.

ALSO IMPROVED

- Learning status and next due time after every rating
- Clearer study, flag, skip, undo, and display controls
- Wider, easier-to-read example sentences with direct audio

- More resilient review saves and undo behavior

- Updated widgets immediately after in-app study
