### 5/5 — good :)

*2017-11-04, version 1.1.2*

Creepy game. Interesting storyline with good combat mechanics. Worth the money.

### 5/5 — Wow!

*2017-05-26*

Worth every cent spent on it! Would love to see a sequel.....EXACTLY what I was looking for in a dark adventure/rpg....5 stars easy......stop spending money on bad pay to win games ,and spend a few bucks to pick up this hidden gem of a game.

### 5/5 — Impressive Hidden Gem

*2017-01-10*

Where has this game been hiding, and WHY isn't it among Apple's best of the best?!? Despite the retro graphics, the game has exceptional gameplay, story, and soundtrack, and is even creepier than a lot of higher end games out there. Well worth the money you'd otherwise spend on a cheeseburger, and way more satisfying!

Would love to see a sequel.

### 5/5 — Best game I have ever played

*2016-10-16, version 1.1.2*

I first got this game a year or so ago it had the best story I have ever seen on a phone game the story would even be good for consoles fighting is good altogether great game and I can't wait to play this for a second time please make a sequel

### 5/5 — Scary fun

*2016-10-01*

If you had ever told me I would find an iOS game scary I would have laughed. Especially with graphics that were cutting edge when I started out gaming. But this game unnerved me and made me jump several times in a way big budget titles never have. And it's fun. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2016-08-28*

This game should be way more popular! I rarely give 5 star reviews, this one definitely deserves it. I think maybe people are put off by the old-style pixelated graphics, but that is a big mistake. Especially if you are looking for a good adventure game that is also quite scary! I was surprised that a pixelated-style graphics game could be scary at all, but it certainly delivers. If the graphics were more realistic, it would've probably been too scary for me. It was just right. And I can't think of a thing to criticize about it, just like another great game, The Room. This game was fun, definitely worth the price, and I hope it gets more attention so this developer will hopefully make more super-enjoyable games. :)

### 5/5 — Incredible

*2016-08-07, version 1.1.2*

This game is just amazing from it's visual style to it's battle system and the story is one of the best on iOS at the moment

### 5/5 — One of the best adventure games on iOS

*2016-05-12, version 1.0.40*

Buy it, you won't regret it.

### 5/5 — I never review but....

*2016-01-23, version 1.0.40*

This game was addictive! I had to beat it. I was surprised at how much I jumped at certain parts of the game.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2016-01-18, version 1.0.40*

I found out about this game via YouTube. I'm so happy I came across it! It's a mixture of kings quest, meets eye of the beholder meets scary! I freaking love it. This game needs to be better recognized. Such a gem

### 5/5 — One of the best mobile point-and-click adventures. Period.

*2015-12-28*

As I write this, I am noticing that Dark Fear has only five written reviews in the App Store. This just goes to show how woefully underappreciated and overlooked this game is. It is one of the best mobile games of the adventure genre. Obviously the retro, pixel-heavy gaming revival is nothing new, but Dark Fear harkens back to a specific era of computer adventure that few (if any) modern titles come close to emulating. The puzzles aren't anything too out of the ordinary, but in the context this great art style, they work very well. At first I was admittedly skeptical about the RPG-style battle/upgrade/equip system, but it turned out to be a great way to break up the monotony that many puzzle adventure games can face. The battles introduced a cool grinding element to stretch out the gameplay and cleanse your palette a bit between tasks. So yeah, tremendously good mobile adventure game. It definitely belongs in the same conversation as The Room, Monument Valley, Lumino City, etc. Now if only we can get sites to review this game and get it the attention it deserves.

### 5/5 — Amazing Time-Waster

*2015-12-27*

This game is amazing! The jump scares are well-timed and don't bombard you until you crap your pants every time or get used to them, because it can really build the creepy atmosphere. I'd recommend playing in the dark with headphones like the game says at the beginning. The combat is interesting, something I haven't seen before. Overall this game is pretty great and worth a play for the price it has.

### 5/5 — Best game on the AppStore right now!

*2015-12-20, version 1.0.40*

I didn't know what to expect when I first bought this game and I wasn't disappointed.
It mixes horror/RPG and point and click adventure really well, the graphics are nostalgic and the story is creepy as hell!

### 5/5 — Great fun

*2015-12-20*

Excellent game A nice mix of old school point and click , and RPGs
Also made me jump a few times - great story Couldn't put it down until completed
Looking forward to a sequel perhaps

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — You cannot save this game.

*2016-03-07, version 1.0.40*

The game cannot be saved, and it doesn't auto save on my device, which means all progress is lost if you exit the application, even momentarily. Upon opening the app, you have to START THE WHOLE THING OVER AGAIN. this is maddening. Please create a save feature.

### 1/5 — Problems

*2015-12-28, version 1.0.40*

I really want to like this, I dig the retro aesthetic. However I've encountered a few problems, one is that if you leave the game to go surf for a bit and then come back to continue the game, you wind up with a kill screen (dead) with no option to do anything. Worse is not being able to get past Olaf, you talk with him for a bit and when you've exhausted all the dialog you are unable to select or do anything. This is right after the book in the upper right hand of the screen appears. If this is fixed I may revisit the game but I doubt I'll be waiting still when the fix does drop

### 3/5 — Boring

*2023-04-14*

Way too much grinding. The game would be about 5 minutes long if you didn’t have to stop and do hunting constantly.

### 3/5 — Bof...

*2015-12-09, version 1.0.40*

The idea is good and the esthetic is cool but the game is way to easy and way to short.

### 3/5 — It's ok.

*2015-12-07, version 1.0.40*

It takes about 3 hours to beat. It does have a few well played spooks. Very easy. Designed for a pre-teen. Worth more like $1 or $1.99 max.

### 4/5 — Great Horror Adventure

*2015-12-29*

Very much enjoyed this. A fun adventure as well as rpg.
My favorite parts were puzzle solving. Figuring out what items get you where, completing rituals, etc... All felt really good.
The combat got a bit repetitive, but it was fun. Also, there is a bit of grinding on the hunting/fishing side.
Overall, this is a great callback to old school adventures. It feels good to play. And it's actually pretty scary!

### 4/5 — Great mix with one reservation

*2015-11-26*

I really had a great time playing this - the game play mechanics are a cool mix of point-and-click adventure, light RPG, and dexterity challenges that determine how well you hit your enemies. The hunting and fishing were great too. I liked the story until the end. It's really too bad that the writer has some kind of weird transphobic hang-up. This game would have been perfect without that. Usually not one for being offended but it was off putting--not is cool horror kinda way but in a mean/hateful kinda way. Otherwise awesome game.

### 4/5 — Good game but...

*2015-11-24, version 1.0.32*

The storyline could be considered transphobic.

### 4/5 — Way more fun than I expected

*2015-11-17*

This game shouldn't be as fun as it is, but ... It is! Fun mechanic with a little, but not too much, grinding required. Nice old school graphics too. You lose a star because the puzzles were a bit too easy and the game isn't optimized for the bigger screen of the 6/6s.

Definitely worth $3.

### 4/5 — It looks promising

*2015-11-17*

The atmosphere achieved in this game to bring a sense of horror is perfect. In my previous review I complained about bugs. The game works fine now. I erased some stuff from my iPad and the game runs without trouble. I guess it just needed more space. Sorry, my bad.

After playing it a bit, it is a nicely streamlined RPG / graphic adventure. Not very difficult in either category. Great game for a quick short horror RPG kick.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Played this a loopooong time ago

*2025-06-05*

Wish the developer had made more games.

### 5/5 — A must play horror rpg

*2024-08-06, version 1.1.2*

For a pixel graphics game this does the job! I was stuck for a game to play and saw Dark Fear randomly mentioned on Reddit and gave it a try… and didn’t stop until I completed it. Mature storyline, very ‘Hammer House of Horror’ feel to the game. Perfectly balanced, money gathering methods and weapon / armour increase at just the perfect pace for combat to be a challenge. You won’t get lost. Simple combat / hunting mechanics. Will keep you happy for about 4-6 hours and worth every penny. tip : click everything as that errant pixel is likely something to discover. Oh and effective jump scares. Well done dev! More please!

### 5/5 — A rare find - don’t let it pass

*2022-12-28*

I originally bought this for my desktop, never realizing it was available on the iPad. The desktop was sooo much fun I decided to check and VOILA! I can not play this anywhere with my iPad. It’s dark/creepy with a really good story/plot to keep you interested. The gameplay is simple, but still engaging and the graphics are so retro & cool. I’ve paid way more for games that were not 1/2 as good, snatch this one up if you can.

### 5/5 — Very well worth it

*2022-04-04, version 1.1.2*

For the price, go for it.
I enjoyed my time playing it. I liked how the plots are combined together at the end.
Great purchase.

### 5/5 — So much fun!

*2021-11-20*

My wife and I stayed up late last night playing this game. Definitely the most underrated app on the App Store. I hope the developers get the recognition they deserve for this throwback classic.

### 5/5 — so fun

*2020-09-08*

pls make more!

### 5/5 — Just

*2020-05-27*

what Ive been searching for!! C64ish horror adventurers with slight RPG elements. So good. Really wish there were more games like this for iOS!

### 5/5 — Hands Down, Best Game I Ever Played

*2019-03-18, version 1.1.2*

This has every element of a classic RPG style game while also still giving you an extra feeling that you’ve contributed not just your knowledge but also your own skill in battle. Mysteries, puzzles, and an ending that will have you kicking yourself because it was just so dang obvious.

### 5/5 — Really enjoyed this one.

*2019-02-14*

Basically a old school adventure game with modern elements. I enjoyed upgrading my armor and weapons, it did get slightly boring grinding for more gold but the game sets u up with plenty of gold from just fights.

### 5/5 — Unexpected greatness!

*2018-04-22*

This game is incredible. I read the reviews and wondered why they were praising this relatively unknown game so much. Figured it was worth a try and I was not disappointed! The soundtrack is gorgeous, there are legitimate jump scares and creepy characters/landscapes. The puzzles are relatively easy but the storyline keeps you interested and engaged. I can not recommend this game more highly if you love adventure games.
